Background
We have visited Wymering Manor before (December 2005) and had some interesting experiences and so the group were looking forward to returning exactly (to the day) 2 months later. Some people were wanting to face fears from the previous visit, some were wanting to see if they could pick up on the same things as they did last time and some hoped that this visit would yield an experience for them.
After we chatted with Dave and got ourselves settled, positioned our hub and laptop in the main hall we started our set up for the night.
Many thanks again to Dave Scanlan and the YHA for allowing us more investigation time in this beautiful building.

Personal Reports
Julie Harwood
This was most of the groups second trip to Wymering Manor. When we visited in December we all said we wanted to return and so were looking forward to this investigation with a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. Our first vigil was a fear factor one. Anyone who read the December report of our investigation will know the immense fear that Wayne and I had for the dining room. We decided this fear needed to be faced head on and made this our first vigil. We both were very nervous and barely looked in the dining room as we set our equipment up. When it was time to go in and all other group members had vanished to their vigils we very gingerly tiptoed in. Now I have been into a lot of rooms on investigations but there has never been a room that has made me feel like this one. Even with the lights on full I could feel myself shaking and my teeth were chattering but not from the cold. We sat in there for a while with the lights on and then decided to both sit facing the hatch. We then turned the lights out and again although I have sat in hundreds of pitch black rooms before and have never ever been scared of the dark we kept our little torch on for a lot of the time. Neither of us really wanted to call out and both of us could feel a cold breeze across our legs. Eventually I mustered the courage to call out and immediately an orb shot through the hatch. Wayne told me this and so we both started watching the camcorder screen and when I called out orbs did seem to dance around the hatch. I have always tried to be very level headed about orbs and have usually been able to explain a lot of them as dust or hair in the air etc, however what I have problems explaining is when they appear to be “Intelligent” dust. We filmed the whole time and yet only had orbs when we called out. Were they dancing on our camcorder in response to my questions or are they dust and hair that just happens to be moving past the camcorder when we are calling out and not when we are silent? Both Wayne and myself were very scared by this point and this reached a climax when we both heard a loud scraping/scratching noise on the table right in front of us, when I called out asking for spirit to make a noise in the room with us. I was writing a note at the time and just froze as the noise was aprox a foot in front of me and Wayne did not even look as he thought it was me. I told him it wasn’t and so we continued to call out when all we really wanted to do was run out of the room. Then suddenly the chair right next to Wayne started to vibrate and Wayne watched it as it moved. This was enough for us. We had asked them to make a noise in the room and move something. Whatever was there, if anything had done both and so we decided to leave as I remember commenting to Wayne that I did not think it was healthy for our hearts to be beating so quickly! At first I was very embarrassed that we had only lasted 25 minutes of our hour vigil but looking back on it, I am surprised we lasted that long!
Our next vigil was back in the dining room but with the rest of the team. We conducted a séance and every single member of the team heard footsteps (aprox 4 or 5) quite loudly and purposeful in the corridor on the other side of the hatch.
Alison and David went to investigate and believe they saw some movement but I did not experience anything else during this séance. The atmosphere in the dining room was so much different from when Wayne and I were in there, it was a lot lighter and less oppressive but I still did not like it at all. Its important to say though that myself and Wayne did not tell any of the rest of the group what we had experienced in that room as we thought this may put feelings in peoples heads and that would be unfair and not very objective.
My next vigil after the séance was with Maureen and Alison in room 5. Both of my team mates are very sensitive so for this vigil I thought it best if I filmed to let them pick up on the atmosphere of the room. They both did and quite quickly they had picked up on a young girl from 1870 called Suzanna. I am glad I was filming as watching the screen was fascinating. We were getting orbs of varying brightness and shape but only in response to questions. When we sat and did not ask anything, orbs were not picked up on camcorder. I do not think I have ever done a vigil where so many orbs were captured on film. They seemed to dance around the 3 of us. The only other thing I experienced in this room was the overwhelming smell of aniseed and Alison hit the nail on the head when she said gob stoppers/aniseed balls. That’s exactly what it smelt like.
The next couple of vigils were on the whole quite uneventful. When I was in the Vanguard room with Brian we did hear a lot of heavy footsteps above us. We presumed this was Dave and his family however thought it was strange they were walking around so loudly at 3 in the morning. In the Chapel room I did not experience anything else but what felt like frostbite! At –3 we did not manage to stay in that room long.
Again a thoroughly enjoyable night at Wymering Manor. Would I return? Absolutely right I would. There is something not right there and I want to know what it is. Thanks again to Dave Scanlan & the YHA.
Alison Blyth
The first thing I must say about this place, is the effect it has on me personally. Usually I am quite reserved, but Wymering seems to make me a giggly individual.
There are two rooms in this building that really put me on edge, and they are the dining room and the corridor with the dormitories in. Whilst I didn’t pick up much in the dining room, it seems to hold a secret, and not a pleasant one. I cannot explain this, but during my vigil in this room, I felt bitterly cold and scared. This struck me as strange, as the building is really cold and in most of the rooms did not phase me, but in the dining room it seemed to bother me immensely. I also had the feeling of being watched from the alcove by between the fireplace and the door. I kept seeing shadows and felt movement, but I can’t verify any of this as the wall with the fireplace was white and the alcove cream, with the dark wood on the other side, my eyes could be playing tricks with me.
We did conduct a séance in this room with the entire group and I felt nothing within the room, but I did hear footsteps in the corridor by the hatch. Curiosity and the need for an explanation drew me to investigate further. David joined me, and further footsteps were heard whilst we stood in the corridor.
I stood one end and David the other. I stood in front of the dormitory and heard a giggle. I walked back to see what it was and caught a glimpse of a small girl in the dormitory. She smiled and darted away further into the room. As I do not usually see spirit, it freaked me out a bit, and I am ashamed to say I ran towards David. No other occurrences happened in this area.
The other room which I believe we encountered something was the Hood. Ed, Brain and myself were talking, as all we could hear is footsteps above us. We all assumed that it was Dave settling and dismissed it as nothing unusual. This we must establish and rule out any possibility that it could have been any other than that.
The best part of the evening was room 5. Julie Maureen and I decided to call out and I was given the image of a small girl with curly brown golden hair with big hazel eyes. She was smiling contentedly as she was playing. It was strange as the image was not from this building but of fields filled with daisies and she had a white summer dress with under skirts and ankle length black boots. The sun was shining and the sky blue. She was holding a hoop in her hands. The image was strange as it wasn’t a picture, more a movie as at first she was skipping, then she stopped to turn and show herself to me for a split second, then skipped away and carried on with what she was doing. I called out to see if she would respond, and Julie confirmed she had by showing an orb on our camcorder. I explained to her that she could show herself to us through our magic box, as she could see us , but we could not her. She gave me the name of Suzanna and confirmed that this was correct by showing us more lights. Over the hour, she confirmed that she was 8 and a half that she could have been born in July in 1870. She even gave Julie the smell of aniseed, which we assumed was sweets. Every time she seemed to leave us, as soon as we mentioned sweets, she seemed to return. At one point she would pass comments like ‘don’t want to’ and thought we were silly, which by the tone used lead me to believe she was from money. She confirmed that her parents owned land and ponies, but we couldn’t establish why she was here. The only thing that struck me, is that she could have gone to school here, but without knowing what the building was used for I could not confirm this.
All in all Suzanna made my evening, as I felt blessed to have had the opportunity to meet her and connect with her.
David Ireland
Well We’ve just finished our return visit to Wymering Manor in Portsmouth and all I can really say is it was interesting. When I had my first visit with the group to the manor in December we all found it to be deathly cold. For half the night I found that I couldn’t perform the seances to the best of my ability. No matter how many heaters we had on in the building we couldn’t warm up. The return visit was exactly the same. I arrived at 11:00 PM and the rest of the group had arrived before that to set up the equipment and complete the baselines.
Vigil 1
For Vigil 1 Sue and me were in room 5. Last time I was at Wymering I didn’t get a chance to go to room 5. From what other members have told me they all picked up on different things. Obviously they didn’t tell me what, so I was interested to see if Sue and me could pick anything up seeing as we are both very sensitive. As soon as we walked in the freezing cold hit us both right in the face. When the baseline test in the room had been done earlier on they said the temperature was around –2’c!! We both decided to sit facing the door. I moved a chair from a little alcove where there was a window and Sue sat on a chair that was already in place. We both sat talking and for a while we didn’t pick up on anything. Sue began to pick up a few light anomalies on camera and we were both extremely drawn to the alcove where I had taken the chair. I also thought I saw the shape of a leg move through the bed but I wasn’t a hundred percent sure whether my eyes were playing tricks. I began to call out to see if anyone was there. I asked if there was any children in the room and if there were, could they touch either Sue or me. For a few minutes we didn’t get anything, then Sue jumped and said that something had very gently poked her in the back. A little while after that Sue and me both agreed that we were feeling very uncomfortable psychically and physically so we had to leave early. I told Julie when we came out that I sensed that there was something in the room that was nothing short of evil.
Vigil 2
Vigil 2 was a group séance in the dining room where I had a bad experience last time we were there. Julie and Wayne were very reluctant to go back to the dining room because they had been in there for vigil 1 and had experienced an intense feeling of fear. They to had to leave early. I thought this was very strange because I have never known Julie to become frightened in a room. Or Wayne for that matter. We all gathered round a table to perform a simple “calling out” séance. Alison led the séance and began with the protection. She began to call out and got nothing. We sat there for a while until we all heard (including Ed!) very distinct heavy footsteps in the hallway. Alison asked Julie if she could go in the hallway and stand there while they call out. Julie suggested that I go with Alison as two people are better than one. The group began to call out in the dining room and I got the intense feeling that there was a very strict, proper gentleman stood behind me. I turnt round and psychically saw him but couldn’t make out what he was wearing. He then walked past me and into the long dormitory where Alison was stood. Alison and me both picked up on the spirit of a little girl and the man. I was impressed with this because I have never known an investigation where Alison and I picked up on exactly the same people. I stood and tried to connect with the little girl but the only thing I could see was the little girl singing ‘ring around a roses’ which I later found out from Julie was a song about the plague. Alison and me joined the others to close the séance.
Vigil 3
Brian and me were in the chapel for vigil 3, which is now the manor kitchen. This was very uneventful and we didn’t pick up on anything.
Vigil 4
For vigil 4 Julie and me joined Ed and Wayne in the chapel. Again nothing was happening so we all sat talking. Julie was just about to say something when I told her to shush. I asked her if she had her foot on the chair next to her and she said no. The chair had banged on the floor 3 times but unfortunately I was the only one that heard it.
Conclusion
Is Wymering Manor haunted? I really do think so. Unfortunately we couldn’t get any proper divination’s going so we couldn’t find out any relevant information. Once again I would like to thank Dave for letting us have the entire run of the manor. Despite the cold it was a pleasure investigating Wymering manor.
Amanda Horley
Vigil 1:
The Chapel was extremely cold, probably because it has three outside walls, and because of this we were well wrapped up. Our time in there was extremely quiet, and there were no changes to the EMF readings or temperatures during the vigil. Maureen and I both commented on how “normal” the room felt and there was nothing during the hour to make us feel that we had company.
Group Séance:
Shortly after the start of the glass divination in the dining room, I along with everyone else heard what clearly sounded like footsteps in the corridor beyond the hatch. Whilst these were investigated, we continued with the glass, but it did not move.
Vigil 2:
The large dormitory was split into three areas, and had a lot of shadowy areas, which made me feel uneasy at first but I eventually became less concerned about. There was a distinct drop in temperature about 20 minutes into the vigil, in which the temperature in all three areas dropped by a couple of degrees. This didn’t feel like a gradual drop as I became aware of it suddenly rather than over a period of time. However this was the only unusual event that happened, and despite both Ed and myself calling out, there was nothing further to suggest that there was something there.
Vigil 3:
Room 5 was relatively warmer than the other rooms. Ed and I both took turns again at calling out, but there was no reaction to our requests.
Vigil 4:
Alison, Brian and myself settled down in one corner and took turns in calling out. There were a couple of clicks or taps near the fireplace but other than that nothing else happened. David joined us part way through the vigil, and after a further period of time with no response, Alison and myself left the room to see if the two men would have a better chance of getting a reaction without us being there.
For me it was an incredibly quiet (and very cold!) investigation in what should be a very active building. The footsteps were very distinct, but they were the only unusual occurrence for me during the evening. The individual vigils did not yield anything out of the ordinary from my point of view. The other groups had more luck in their vigils, so maybe it will be my turn next time.
Wayne Blyth
Vigil 1, Julie & Wayne 11.15PM
I was so looking forward to returning to this wonderful place, not least because, when we were last here, myself and Julie felt an irrational fear in the dining room vigil.
Our return visit proved an even more fearful experience.
As soon as we sat down with the lights off, we were subjected to cold spots, light anomalies and knocks and bangs.
On asking out, several impressive “orbs” appeared on camera. One even appeared to follow the laser beam from the temperature gun. The temperature also seemed to drop around our legs, underneath the table. This continued to drop all throughout our vigil. Again, after Julie asked out, a knock was heard in the room. At one point, the chair to my right moved of it’s own accord and Julie even saw the chair vibrate. Unfortunately, after not too many more minutes, both myself and Julie had had enough by this time and we decided to leave. I can honestly say that I have never experienced fear in any vigil quite like that. The last time we were here, we were scared, but this time, it was much, much worse.
I would have to say, that, on viewing the video tapes afterwards, they, in my mind, are the most impressive anomalies I have ever seen captured on film.
Séance Group dining room vigil 12.30 AM
This was quite disappointing for me, although there were a couple of what appeared to be orbs captured on camera. Alison & David decided to venture into the hallway. They noticed that one of the trigger objects had appeared to move. We cannot discount the theory that they may have been knocked inadvertently. I know both David and Alison sensed the presence of a little girl and also a man. Our attempts at glass divination proved fruitless.
Vigil 2 Sue & Wayne 1.15 AM
This turned out to be the most disappointing of my vigils. I can honestly say that I experienced nothing unusual at all in this room. Sue did manage to capture a light anomaly on her camera, but this was the extent of our findings. The one thing that we did experience, however, was the bitter cold of the freezing room.
Vigil 3 Wayne, Maureen, & David 2.30 AM
Again, another disappointing vigil. We sat quietly for the vigil with nothing unusual happening. Temperature readings were constant at approximately 10 degrees Celsius, and EMF readings were normal.
Vigil 4
It was decided that we join up with Julie’s team and head to the chapel room. We unfortunately found nothing unusual here either and it was decided that we finish the vigil early.
Conclusion
The dining room still has a distinct atmosphere to it. There is definitely something strange there. On both visits, I felt fear where there should be none. We did manage to capture light anomalies on tape but are they dust? Are they paranormal? I am still undecided.
At one point, after our vigil, both Julie and myself, said that we would not go back in that room. However as the night went on, that feeling seemed to subside. I felt that I would be able to go back in there. We will have to make yet another visit, just to see if I could.

I was very excited to revisit this investigation.
I had great expectations to follow from the visit in December.
First Vigil. David and Sue [Room 5]
On entering Room 5 the cold atmosphere was bone chilling. Ed and I had done the base line tests and in this room, it was minus 2.5 so we put the electric fire on.
But David and I felt no heat at all we sat for a while and David decided to move a chair and sit buy the heater next to me, I felt quite strange in this room after David moved the chair I felt something prod me in the back at the same time the chair was moved.
I picked a few light anomalies on the night vision and David thought he saw the curtain move.
We were both getting colder and the backs of my legs were stinging so we decided to leave.
Group Séance [Dining Room]
Most of the group sat around the table, Alison opened the séance with the protection prayer we only had slight movement of the glass but we heard noise’s coming from the corridor Alison and David left the table and entered the corridor, Julie carried on calling out.
The glass did not respond but the noises was still coming from the corridor, the trigger object had moved slightly but it could have been knocked as it was on a shelf under the sink.
Nothing else seemed to happen so Alison closed down the table.
Vigil 2. Wayne and Sue. [Hood]
On entering this room I felt slightly cold but not the same sort of cold I felt in room 5.Wayne set up the night vision camcorder on a bunk bed, he was feeling very cold we both sensed nothing in this room apart from we had a fit of the giggles.
It seemed to get colder as the time went on at on point I had to open the curtains as I thought I saw a black shadow on one of the beds but I put it down to a crumpled up duvet on the bed.
Wayne and I were so cold by the end of the vigil we both were glad to leave.
Vigil 3. Alison and sue. [Chapel]
Alison and I sat at the table in this room. I put the camcorder on the table.
Alison called out but both of us felt calm we sat for a while and then we both saw what looked like the shadow of a cat walking on the window sill outside we both jumped up and looked out the door but could not see or hear anything.
I caught a few light anomalies in this room but nothing was seen or heard so we made our way back up the stairs as both of us was feeling the cold as we were walking past the big dorm we both heard laughing but nothing was in there.
Vigil 4. Maureen and sue [Vanguard]
We both settled down on some stools we sat this vigil for the whole vigil neither of us felt anything
It did not seem so cold in this room.
But maybe it was because I was so cold anyway.
My whole experience at the Wymering was different from the last it was defiantly more active.
I would love to do another investigation their just to find out why most of our group end up by the end of it feeling mischievous and playful.

Vigil 1. [Hood] Alison, Ed, Brian
After settling we spent some time calling out with no response, Alison and Ed thought they heard footsteps outside the door Alison and Ed went to investigate Ed stood in the door way, the room went very quit, After a while you guessed it Alison barged through the door that I was lent against which scared me half to death.
We decided to do a séance which turned up nothing at all we closed the séance down and decided to leave the vigil.
Group séance in the Dining Room
We opened the séance with a protection prayer after a while we all defiantly heard footsteps in the corridor the other side of the food hatch we decided that two members of the group Alison and David went into the corridor to investigate but to me nothing else happened.
So we closed down the séance.
Vigil 2. [Chapel] David and Brian
We decided to sit at a table on the far right-hand side; it was very, very cold not much different then the last time we visited in December of last year.
We called out several time’s with no response. The chapel seemed to be peaceful could but very peaceful after ¾ of an hour David and I left the Chapel it is the second visit to this area I always look forward to this vigil and the second time nothing happened in this area.
Vigil 3. [The dining Room]. Alison, Amanda, David, Brian
We decided not to do a séance just sit and ask out we all felt that we where not along, There was someone else that would not show themselves. The more we called out the more whoever or whatever stayed in the corner where I felt it was hidden.
We thought that if the lady’s in the group left the dining room hoping that whoever was hidden form us would show themselves to David and me.
But again unfortunately nothing happened.
[Vanguard] Julie, Brian
Julie and I settled in this room just taking pictures and emf readings the room felt quite pleasant Julie thought she saw light moving across the door I picked up a few light anomalies. Julie and I decided to do an experiment by putting the night vision camera over the top of a pillow and banging the pillow to see if the light anomalies we had caught before near the pillow were dust. They did seem to look the same as what we had caught but were not as big as the one I had caught at the beginning of the vigil.
Nothing as happened in this room.
Ed Ashton
Our second visit to Wymering Manor was, for me anyway, the same as the last. Fairly uneventful for the most part, but I was very interested to pick up on other people's experiences and their own individual preferences to the areas that they had felt the most uncomfortable in.
The extreme cold made the whole place almost unbearably uncomfortable (although this was down to the weather and not, unfortunately, evidence that the entire place was infested with spirits!!!)
The one incident worthy of a mention was when we where all assembled in the dining room performing a seance. On 2 separate occasions when we called out, there was the definite sound of footsteps that seemed to be coming from the passageway that led to the kitchen. There was no-one out there as we were all seated in the dining room. They were easily audible as there was a large hatchway in the wall that opened out onto that particular area and were so clear that everyone (including myself, I am happy to say!) heard them. And one thing was for certain, they definitely were not coming from Dave, the proprietor, whose living quarters where on the upper floor as they sounded too close and it was obvious to us all that these were the sound of footsteps on a stone floor which was indeed what the corridor had.
Apart from that, the usual sounds that can be expected in a house this old, where heard (creaking floorboards etc) and most of the other vigils passed without incident.
My Conclusion’s
I would like to thank Dave for having us back .I found it just as cold as it was the last time we were at Wymering even putting extra warm cloths it was still very cold.
I would like to visit again as every time the group visits the Manor we all feel very happy and end up laughing. Not to say we are an unhappy group, that we definitely are not. But it seems that the Wymering brings the best out in us.
