History of Ruthin Gaol

Ruthin Gaol stands on a site that was first used as a prison in 1654. Until the Gaol’s closure in 1916 it was subject to many alterations and additions, including the wing based upon the Pentonville model, built in 1866. Today, part of it is used to house the County Record Office.

The Gaol building will be used as an educational centre and will house a wide range of archive material to encourage the use of original sources and research techniques.

The interpretation of the Gaol site will use sources to give a complete picture of its social and architectural history.

After an intense period of building and restoration work, part of the site will be available for the public and educational groups from 2001. Much evidence of the Gaol’s former years remains for interpretation of the prison system. The building, acknowledged to be architecturally and historically interesting, will be used to tell the story of crime and punishment in the area, a story that includes other sites in the town

Personal Reports

Julie Harwood

Ruthin Gaol - I was really looking forward to this weekend so was eager to start investigating when we arrived at the Gaol. After a great tour with our helpful host Dylan we were ready to start. Amanda, Sandy and I started on the ground floor which I believe was just below ground. We called out but did not get much response so Sandy tried calling out in Welsh while I held a pendulum. I am very sceptical of these as there is too much human intervention for my liking however it did seem to be moving and not just moving but moving on command or when we asked questions. When we asked it to stop it did and when we asked it to circle it did so my mind is still open to this form of divination as I was holding the pendulum as still as humanly possible. We also heard a doorbell ring in this vigil which was very odd as we did not know where it came from. The only thing we could think of was that it came from the disabled lift but personally I could not imagine it making a sound like this.

Our next vigil was on the second (Middle) floor. We started off in the condemned mans cell and all of us were certain we saw the mannequin of William Hughes move even though we knew that it could not possibly move. We found out at the end of the night that lots of members had experienced this and so it made me give it a lot more thought. The only idea I could come up with was that just possibly the mannequin by pure coincidence was in the exact same place as the William Hughes was before he was hung. Could it be that what we were seeing was the residual energy of William Hughes move hence if the energy moved it gave the appearance of the statue moving. It all seems very fanciful and I am not sure how much I believe it but it seems the only way that a solid inanimate object could appear to move in front of so many peoples eyes. We double checked with Dylan that the statues were not mechanical in any way and he confirmed they were solid and did not move.

We then moved on to a cell with lots of pictures in it (of the renovation of the gaol) and called out however Di then came to get us as Matt had apparently gone into a trance and would not come out of it. When we went down Matt came bounding out of the cell he was in with his team mate Emma and seemed fine. We then decided to team up with Di’s team for the rest of the night.

Di, Emma and I went back to the condemned mans cell as we were all intrigued by it. Again the statues were seemingly moving. We even tried changing the lighting conditions by waving our torches around but although it changed the shadows it did not seem to make the mannequins appear to move.

The Gaol is a fascinating place and I would recommend people visit it. Thank you so much to the trust for allowing our visit and also to the perfect host Dylan who was polite and helpful the whole night. Would I go back? I would have to say a definite yes as I would love to watch those mannequins again.

Secret Undisclosed Location : Mid Wales - This was a stunning building and I was so excited to be able to investigate it especially as it had not been investigated before. When we arrived we had a quick drink and then got on with proceedings. We stayed all together for our first vigil as there was only 9 of us and the place was very open plan. We were calling out and Mandy was getting more and more nervous. She kept looking to her left towards Emma and me. Seconds later I felt something grab my arm quite hard. I jumped but I have to consider it may have been a muscle spasm / cramp. Amanda and Matt could sense a man behind Matt’s chair and then he appeared to move behind me. I could not sense or see anything though it did feel very cold behind me. It did make me a little nervous. Mandy was getting more and more concerned and so we decided to stop for a break.

When we started again we decided to hold a double glass divination in the dining room. The people on my table said they could feel the glass moving a little bit but unfortunately I could not feel it. The other group were also getting very very slow movement so we decided to try table tipping while they carried on with the glass. I am not sure was wrong with me that night as the members I was with felt the table move but I didn’t. I think I must have just been a bit tired.

After a cup of coffee to wake me up we left the other team in the dining room as they were getting some success with glass and we moved back into the lounge area. Di, Maria, Megan and I could hear thumping upstairs but we knew no one was up there. When the other team rejoined us we had another quick break as another member of the team was upset as he had received a personal message during the glass divination. After this some of the team went upstairs to investigate the banging and I believe they did sense a couple of things however on the whole it was a quiet night for me apart from the sqwaking sound I heard towards the very end of the night when we were leaving. To me it sounded like vulchers over head which was a little creepy seeing it was the middle of the night. The only other thing I experienced was the smell of hay in the kitchen area. It did not smell like a normal farmyard but more like something in the zoo where the camels or giraffes were kept. Amanda & Maureen (being a volunteers at Marwell) could probably verify that there is a definite difference between the smell of a camel and the smell of sheep or cows.

Despite a quiet night for me at the secret location I did not enjoy any less as it was a privilege to investigate. One thing was for sure, we were pleased to make our way back to the accommodation so we could get some rest.

Ruthin Gaol

It took about an hour and a half to get to Ruthin Gaol. It was very nice travelling there because of the scenery, it was magnificent. The welsh valleys certainly make it a nice place to live. It reminded me of home (Scotland), really beautiful. When we got to the Gaol it was a magnificent building. We met our host for the evening Dillon, he was very informative. He gave us the tour and it was nice inside considering it was a Gaol. Before we started our vigils we all went outside of the Gaol for our team photo. Then we all went back inside to get ready for our vigils.

Team: Julie Amanda and Me

We started by taking a few pictures. I set up my camcorder. I had a full battery but after a couple of minutes it went completely dead. Then we started off by calling out on the first floor of the Gaol (which was below ground floor). Julie started but nothing really happened but then I gave Julie the pendulum I had with me and Amanda called out. The pendulum started to move then I called out in welsh and it really went round and a round it was really fascinating. Then Julie Amanda and I all heard a door bell, it was a bit weird as no one was anywhere near a bell. We all went into another cell it was horrible as it was called the dark room (Solitary Confinement). There was a sense that you should be scared in there. We took a few pictures and called out but all was quiet so we moved on. Then we went into the padded cell again. We called out but came up with nothing. All the teams had a swap around and we went to the second floor of the Gaol where we could see everything, it was very impressive. We called out in the main area before going into a cell that belonged to a man called William Hughes, where there was a mannequin of a priest and William Hughes. We swore that the mannequin moved and after talking to the other teams we found that everybody thought the same thing, it was really freaky. We spent most of the vigil in here so it didn’t leave much time for anything else before the break. It was fantastic none the less and we all went back to the Prisoners dinning area for a break as this was our station.

Team: Julie Amanda and Me

We all started back to the second floor and again we started in William Hughes cell again. Everybody thought the dummy was moving so we called out and heard a few knocks but we could not find where the noise was coming from. We then moved to another cell, it was ok but I didn't feel anything in here and Julie and Amanda felt the same. Then we all went into a cell that looked like a World War memorabilia cell. Not much happened but we had a chance to look at all the items in there.

Team: Julie Amanda and Me

After another short break we went to the second floor again and went into different cells. We were there for about ten or fifteen minutes when Di came up looking for us. Di said matt was in a trance and couldn’t get him out of it so we went down to help and just before we got to the cell Matt was in he came running out. From then on we joined Di Emma and Matt. Di Julie And Emma went into the William Hughes cell and Amanda and Matt went to the second floor. I went to the very top floor, it was brilliant up there. I was there all by myself and I was calling out in welsh and I a noise like something was thrown off. As I listened all I could hear in my head was a AAAHHH until it hit the bottom. I also got a few light anomalies and I smelt what can only be described as Camel cigarettes, it was really strong. After that we all retired back to the base station and packed up.

I would just like to say thank you to Julie for a great Location and thank you to Dillon for letting us into the Gaol it was a fantastic and yes I would go back if the location ever came up again.

Secret Location in Mid Wales

We all started off in the living room where we called out and heard a few knocks. I think Julie got touched on the arm so it was a good start. We all heard a bang coming from the kitchen area. Matt also felt he had someone behind him and Amanda was getting closer to me as she did not feel comfortable. We then we had a quick break and had a séance in the kitchen area. As there were many tables we tried glass divination on 2 of the tables. I was with Mandy, Matt, Amanda and Emma and on the other table there was Julie, Maria, Diana and Megan.

We started off by calling out but the glass was taking its time. It was moving slightly but nothing happened with the other table so they tried table tipping and Matt swapped with Megan. It all seemed quiet and nothing happened so the other team went back into the main room and we stayed in the kitchen. We asked some more questions and the glass started to get more active. I asked if the spirit we got in contact with was a relation the glass moved rapidly for a yes answer. I called out the names round the table but the glass didn't move. I asked if the spirit had a friend around the table and again I called out the names around the table but the glass didn't move until it got to me. It moved quickly and I was astonished and asked myself why me. I asked a few questions and the glass was responding to my questions and Emma said you know who it is and I said I knew exactly who it is was. It turned out it was a friend of mine, Callum that was murdered in Portsmouth and he just wanted to tell me he was ok. I could not help myself and had to go outside for some fresh air as tears were welling up. That was all for me in this location.

It was a fantastic weekend I would love to do it again.

Di Moore

We travelled to Wales Saturday, leaving in the morning about 07.30, I travelled with Maria and Megan. After arriving at our accommodation we took our cases in and went and had something to eat and drink before leaving for Ruthin Gaol.

Ruthin Gaol - we arrived and had a walk round. On the walk around I felt that the figures in the condemned cell moved, on seeing this I had to get out of this cell fast.

My team was Emma, Matt and myself

Top Floor - Prisoners Cells

This started by Matt feeling dizzy then he felt that he wanted to jump over the railings. He felt that prisoners were beating up. This was outside Cell 7. I just had the feeling of workhouse conditions and a gun. We noticed that two cells had the number 13 on the doors (it went 12, 13, 13, then 14). Outside Cell 17 I had cold shivers after doing a séance and I felt it had a connection with Cell 7. Emma asked if we could go down one floor which we all agreed to. This was the middle floor and Emma had a tight feeling around her chest between cells 14 and 15. There were creeks and noises on both floors but I put that down to the building moving as the temperature was getting colder outside.

Ground Floor

We went into the Wardens Room and sat down, me in the Wardens Chair which had a desk in front, Emma the other side and Matt to the side of the room. This made me feel very important, like I was the Warden. Emma sitting opposite also felt important and high ranking in the prison staff. After a bit I noticed that Emma was looking strange so I asked if she was alright but she did not reply. She had a stern look, her face seem to have changed and it didn’t look like Emma at all. I kept asking her if she was alright as she looked as if she was in a trance. I also asked who she was but again she just stared, I told her I was her Boss as sitting in the Wardens Chair. I felt like it, she gave me such a dirty look I then go. I started to film this as I wanted to get it on camera. I tripped on something which made a noise and she came out of the apparent trance, but she could not remember anything about it, her first words were what are you doing there you were sat down there pointing to the Wardens Chair.

We left and went into the isolation cell, standing in silence and Matt sat down on the floor, now Matt seemed to go into a trance, after a bit I went and got Julie and our return he was fine and had come out of it.

Final Vigil.

We teamed up on this vigil with Julie, Sandy & Amanda. Julie, Emma and myself went to the Condemned Cell were we sat in silence. While looking around I was drawn to the statues of the condemned man and the priest once again. They seemed to move, as if looking closer at me. To me there faces changed from stone like to flesh, I could see there faces clearly. As Julie was telling Emma that part of the cell went out to the hangman’s noose the priests head seemingly nodded as though he was saying yes. We spent a long time in this cell until it was eventually time to pack up and head off.

Thank you to Dillon for showing us round and the Trust for letting us investigate Ruthin Gaol.

Amanda Horley

Ruthin Gaol

Normally I choose to go into an investigation knowing nothing about the location, but being up in Wales beforehand and having a couple of hours to spare I decided to do a tour of the jail earlier in the day, firstly to see if I picked anything up in daylight hours and secondly to see if it affected what I picked up on the investigation itself. On my tourist trip round the jail I felt presences in two of the cells, the padded cell and the condemned cell. I found the mannequin of the prisoner in the condemned cell very unnerving, and actually backed out of the cell as I did not want to turn my back on him. I couldn’t wait to get back there in the evening and see what would happen.

We started with a walk round led by Dylan who was looking after us for the evening. I realised that all the information boards had been taken down and placed against the walls. This meant that for those who didn’t know the history there would be no chance picking up on something that they had subconsciously read. Big thanks have to go to Dylan for doing this. There were information boards in all the cells and corridors and it must have taken ages for him to move them all. Then, after we left he had to put them all back up again ready for the next day’s visitors!

I hung back on the walk round and whilst people were looking in one of the cells I glanced down the end of the corridor and thought I saw a shadow going into the toilets. I did however go into the condemned cell and still found the mannequin very disturbing, and I found it very difficult to go over and touch it. I just felt that it was going to get up from its chair. None of the other mannequins in the jail made my feel at all uneasy.

I was initially in a team with Julie and Sandy and we started on the lower floor. I felt very uncomfortable in the padded cell, even though this wouldn’t have been one of the original padded cells of the jail. I couldn’t pick up on anything specific though. Outside in the corridor area I felt the presence of a stern, upright woman. I don’t think she would have been a prisoner. I didn’t however pick anything else up on this level.

Our next vigil was on the second level and at my suggestion we started in the condemned cell. There was a door in this cell that went out onto the external gallows, although for some reason only one man, William Hughes, was hung at Ruthin jail. Other prisoners were sent to Wrexham to be hung. There was a recording playing in the cell that was activated by a sensor, and did involve changing light conditions. This could have helped caused the illusion, but I was convinced the mannequin was moving. It was the figure of a man sat leaning forwards looking at a photograph. Stood next to him was a further figure of a priest reading from the bible. On different playings of the recording I saw his head nodding and his back moving as he breathed. On one occasion I felt that his eyes turned towards us and was more unnerved to hear Julie at that moment that she had just seen his eyes move. We stayed in there for some time and I moved closer to the mannequin, eventually standing with my arm across its back. It was very obviously solid, but still felt like he was going to stand up at any time.

We then moved across to the cells on the other side of the corridor, to a cell which felt oppressive and made me feel light-headed. Both Julie and I sensed a very confident man, not arrogant and quite jovial. The vision that came into my head was that of Private Walker from Dads Army. A wartime spiv who could get you what you wanted without any questions asked.

For our third vigil we were due to due the upper levels of the jail and joined up with Di’s team who were doing the second level. Sandy went up to the roof area whilst Matt and I explored the upper levels. The others covered the cells on the second floor. Although I didn’t sense much on the upper levels, I did find cell 13 on the first level quite strange. We couldn’t go in any of these cells, but when I stood outside 13, the door seemed a lot shorter than the others. It was definitely the same height as all the other cell doors, but whilst I could have walked into cell 14 quite easily I felt I would have to stoop quite a bit to get into 13.

Matt and I then spent some time in the condemned cell and I was pleased to find that he also felt that the mannequin had moved when he walked in. He had not gone into that cell on the walk round so was unaware that several of us had already experienced that sensation. This time it felt like the sleeves of the jacket of the mannequin were swaying slightly. After a time we moved into the cell where Julie and I had felt the wartime man. I again felt the cell was oppressive, but was interested to hear Matt describe a very similar man to the one I was picking up on, although he described him as a prisoner from the jail, who could get what you wanted/needed and did so for the guards as well. I couldn’t get the idea of the wartime man out of my head, so we never did work out which era he came from.

For our final vigil we returned to the lower cells. We went into the dark cell, but I didn’t pick up on anything in here, or the other cells we visited during this vigil.

This was a fascinating place to investigate, and the condemned cell held me completely captivated. I feel that perhaps, purely by chance, the museum has managed to place the prisoner mannequin in the place where William Hughes was sat prior to being hung. The energy of Hughes superimposed on the mannequin would explain why many in the group felt that the mannequin was moving. It would be an interesting experiment to switch the two mannequins around and see if the same effect occurred with the prisoner mannequin in a different place.

Many thanks once again to Dylan for all his efforts to make it a superb night for us. This is definitely somewhere I want to revisit.

Secret Location

After the Ruthin Gaol investigation we were all looking forward to investigating a place that had not been subject to any other investigations. The secret location was known to have unexplained happenings, but the majority of us knew very little about it and almost nothing of the things that had occurred in the past.

We had had a very relaxing afternoon with a lot of laughter and chat, so when we reached the secret location we were in high spirits. Our initial vigil was going to be a group vigil in the main lounge area. There were various knocks and sounds around, but due to the high temperatures it is unlikely that these were caused by the wood of the building settling down. At one point we heard eerie screams from outside, but it sounded like it was an owl, or the buzzards that had been circling round like vultures earlier in the day. There was also the ever present sound of the sheep, Larry and his flock of ewes. For a location in the middle of nowhere it was certainly very noisy.

I felt uneasy about the kitchen door area, although this could just be because it was darker down there. I thought I saw a white light about 3 feet above ground level, and got the sensation of something moving towards us at that height. Di moved over to stand to my left, and the sensation of something approaching immediately ceased. After a time I felt a great sense of trepidation about the stairs and the air there felt like it was swirling around. I felt that a very big man had come up to the circle and was standing behind Matt’s chair. For some reason I felt that I had to close my eyes, but I could still feel him there. The general atmosphere in the group seemed to be deteriorating rapidly so we called an end to the vigil and let everyone calm down. Although we did lighten up again, there seemed to be less enthusiasm than before the investigation had started.

Matt, Emma, Mandy and myself went upstairs for the next vigil. We heard several knocks coming from the adjoining room (which was empty) but the others were downstairs, and were not moving around. Matt also felt the end of the bed he was sat on move when his feet were resting on it. I sat on the floor and got the sense of a young boy, about 4 or 5. However I couldn’t pick up much more about him.

We then had a change of people in this room, with Maria, Megan and Sandy joining me and Matt. Megan was very nervous as one of the phenomenon of this room was the door opening on its own, however, I couldn’t sense anything in the room on this occasion.

After a break we then tried a double glass divination in the dining room. There were tables in the room so we split into two groups working simultaneously to see whether either, both or neither glass would move. Whilst the other table sounded as if they were having some success, I felt that our glass did not move, or did so by very small amounts. The other team moved into the lounge and our glass then began to move. It was not however a spirit connected to the location, rather a friend of one of the group who had a personal message for them.

Following the next break, Matt, Megan and I went back to the room upstairs as Megan was keen to return there. I sat with Megan on the floor and Matt picked up on a girl playing hide and seek in location prior to it being a home. I didn’t sense anything during this vigil, and after an emotional rollercoaster of a night we decided to end the vigils at this point and travel back to where we were staying.

I suspect that whatever spirit we encountered during the first vigil was as frightened of us as we were of it. It must be very disturbing to be quietly haunting a place with no-one taking any notice of you and suddenly a group of 9 people want you to come forward and talk to them.

The location itself was a wonderful place, splendidly isolated with an unknown history to it, it would be interesting to investigate it again. Hopefully a further investigation would be less unsettling for spirits that are there and more information about them could be discovered.

Maria Street

Ruthin Gaol

This was another eagerly anticipated investigation as it involved members from all over the south of England on a weekend to Mid Wales. This was night one of an often hilarious and relaxing weekend for us all.

We arrived at Ruthin at around 8pm and met Dylan, our host for the evening. He was very friendly and conducted a tour of the Gaol for us. I asked him if he would like to join us for the evening and he agreed. I was in a team with Mandy, Megan and Dylan and our first vigil was on the middle floor. We started in the condemned man’s cell and Dylan very kindly translated our questions in to Welsh for us. Unfortunately we had little response, although the EMF meter spiked quite regularly and the temperature dropped quite rapidly from 17c to 14c. We could not ascertain why this was happening and no further activity occurred. It was very quiet so we moved into William Hughes cell. All was also very quiet there also. Our next vigil was on the upper floors and we started by the elevator lobby. Mandy felt drawn to the lobby so we decided to conduct a séance there. We spent 20 minutes in here but again, all was quiet.

After a quick break, we went back out on to the walkways. Mandy and I stayed by the lobby and Megan and Dillon went back down the other end. We called out with no response, so tried an experiment. We asked for the other two to be affected by maybe being touched or having something thrown at them. After around 5 minutes we heard the sound of what sounded like something being thrown in their direction. We didn’t say anything but asked them at the end of the vigil if anything had happened. They then reported that something had been thrown at them. They had heard it bounce off the glass window and then hit the floor. We came downstairs a little earlier and waited at the foot of the stairwell as the others were still conducting their vigil. Almost immediately Dylan could feel tingling on the top of his head. Not to waste an opportunity we called out. We then heard a large sigh, but we do not know where it came from. It suddenly felt a lot colder and we could not find a reason for this. It was a warm night outside and certainly a lot warmer than indoors.

Our next vigil was on the ground floor and we started in the dark cell. We had little response from here so moved on to the Warden’s Cell. There was a small table in here and we sat around it. We called out and could hear footsteps and shuffling from outside. We had a look but there was nobody else there. Dylan felt he had seen somebody stood at the door so we decided to try table tipping and beckoned them in. The table started to tremble slightly and soon escalated to rocking. From the questions we asked, we ascertained our alleged spirit was somebody who had died at the gaol and he was pleased to have visitors who acknowledged him. It was also very cold around us. This was accompanied by more footsteps.

For our final vigil we went back to the Warden’s Cell. Dylan did not accompany us this time, neither did Megan. However Emma joined us as did Sandy. We tried table tipping again but to no avail, although a heavy rubber torch on the table wobbled a couple of times. There was also, a lighter, plastic torch on the table which did not move at all, so this could not be caused by the table being inadvertently knocked.

This was the end of a somewhat quiet evening for our team, but how fantastic to be able to have the gaol all to ourselves all night. Thank you so much to Dylan. You are a very accommodating and friendly host and I really enjoyed our evening.

Undisclosed Location

This was a more relaxed investigation in a remote part of Wales. The stillness and blackness of the night could only add to our trepidation in this picturesque setting. Our vigil took place in an old location on a beautiful summer’s evening. We all sat in the lounge and turned out the lights. We sat quietly and attempted to soak up the atmosphere and heighten our senses. It wasn’t long before somebody noticed a bright light flashing, but this turned out to be a sensor that was reflecting off the photo frame opposite. However red lights were also seen and we could find no explanation for these. I was quite excited also to see two small light anomalies headed towards Matt. I saw these with the naked eye, which was a first for me. Amanda felt there was somebody stood behind Matt and then Julie. We called out and heard a couple of thuds from upstairs, but we have no idea where they came from. We also heard what sounded like a cough but put this down to Larry the coughing ram outside. The tension was increasing for some people and we decided to stop for a break as it wasn’t fair on them. We lightened the atmosphere a little and Sandy made a joke by saying ‘Bring out your dead’ It took my mind to the days of the plague and I could imagine a cart full of dead bodies and a vulcher or two descending for their plentiful meal. We decided to carry on and Matt, Amanda, Mandy and Emma went upstairs to investigate a bedroom, whilst Sandy, Julie, Megan, Di and I decided to stay downstairs. Our vigil came to an abrupt end however when the team upstairs decided to end theirs when it became a bit too much for one of their members. They had tried scrying and the scryer’s face had allegedly changed and she had become frightened. We stopped for a cup of tea then Amanda, Matt, Megan and I made our way back to the back bedroom. I felt very calm in here. Matt was intrigued that the door would close on him whenever he walked in to the room. However, it never happened when I was watching so I can’t come to any conclusions on this.

Our next vigil was in the kitchen and Julie, Megan, Di and I sat at one table and the others were sat at the other table. We set up a glass divination for both tables but ours was very reluctant to move so we tried table tipping instead. The table did move but not significantly. Julie could smell hay very strongly but there was nothing more concrete so our team came back to the living room. It was very quiet however and the night soon came to an end. It was a very atmospheric evening and this place has a very Christmassy feel to it. I could almost imagine the sound of a camel’s hoof clip clopping up the drive as the three wise kings arrived bearing their gifts. It is definitely a place that would warrant future investigation.
