Southern Paranormal - Investigations
The Royal Oak, Bookham, Surrey
Saturday 15th March 2008
Attending Investigators: Val Butler, Ken Taylor, Steen Spencer, Emma MacDonald, Gary Hayes, Mandy Firth & Jim Arnold.
Host: Dwain Kent – Landlord
Introduction
Bookham is first recorded in 675AD in a charter of the Saxon sub- king, also known as Bocheham in the Domesday Book.
In 1876 the population was about eleven hundred, made up of a Vicar and a curate, one member of the medical profession, a surgeon, about twelve families of gentry, nine farmers and twenty six tradesmen including one publican.
It is said that in the late 1700’s Jane Austin spent time there whilst writing her novels.
The domesday survey refers to the manor of Little Bookham being held by Halsard of William de Braose, Lord of Bramber, and the manor appears to have remained in Halsard or Hansard family until about 1291.
The Vicar is Revd William Heberden (rural Dean). His father presented him with the living, which included land, while William was at Oxford. William is the son and grandson of two very important men in medical science both were doctors in Ordinary to George 111. While William spent long months in France he left the parish duties to his son (the curate) John. John lived at the Laurels, Church Place (which has become part of the High Street by the 21st century) His wife Elizabeth also lived there.
The Royal Oak is a quaint 14th century English country public house, most of the interior has still the original features and a warm welcome awaits you by the landlord Dwain Kent and his staff.
We all arrived at eight forty five and at nine o clock we met with our host for the evening Dwain, who showed us the way to our hub and gave us a tour of The Royal Oak.

Teams Vigil Notes
10.30pm Loft all members
EMF 2 Temperatures 15.8
The loft was large with many old beams and an old train set on the floor. We settled down in a semi-circle to hold glass divination. Val calls out for spirit to come forward and move the glass but there was no movement, Val asks again and Jim felt a tugging sensation. There was no positive movement of the glass throughout this séance.
Mandy catches a glimpse of a shadow in the corner by the staircase.
Val and Mandy were sitting together and both felt very cold on their backs no other member felt this.
Val threw a stone and asked spirit to throw it back no response.
Mandy and Val had the feeling that someone was standing behind them.
Val asked spirit to copy her knock and all hear a knock from the corner, asked spirit to knock again, all hear a knock Emma and Gary felt it knocked back close to them.
Val asked spirit to confirm what century did spirit die by knocking then Val said 20th century, 19th century, 18th century and loud knock was heard by all.
Val asked spirit if it was a boy, knock again heard by all.
Val again asks is there someone here you don’t like, loud knock heard. A scratching sound is heard behind Emma and Mandy and Mandy went very cold.
Val asks for age of spirit and starts to count from ten upwards loud knock heard by all on sixteen.
Jim asks spirit, are you scared of someone downstairs? Is it a male? No response is it a female and loud knock is heard by all. Then another knock was heard by Gary.
Jim asks spirit if he is lonely, knock heard again.
Mandy and Emma changed places, Mandy and Val senses someone behind them.
Val asks if spirit can give us the year he died, she starts off with was it in 1700 followed by 1710, 1720, 1730, 1740, 1750, 1760, 1770, 1780 loud knock came on 1780, then Val started to count 1781 and when she said 1788 a loud knock was heard by all.
Val again asked for an initial of his first name and again a loud knock was heard on K
Jim asks spirit if he was foreign and a loud knock again was heard.
Emma gets the name of Kristian
Mandy was extremely frightened in here.
Upon leaving the loft Val was asking if spirit could affect something and to our amazement a few minutes after when we all returned to the hub Ken told us that the camera suddenly went off in the loft although the sound was still there, at the same time that Val had asked.
Jim went back into the loft to hold a lone vigil for ten minutes, and then Val and Emma went, followed by Ken and Steen.
As we were having our break we all saw a very large light anomaly pass across the screen on the television.
All the knocks that we had heard in the loft are clearly audible on the recording.
Ken left the camera in the loft and placed the TV which was still recording on the bar in the saloon.

Val calls out for spirit and straight away the television went off.
Steen Mandy and Val hear someone coming down the stairs and into the bar, stomping about, Steen investigates thinking it was a member of the other team but no-one was there.
Mandy, Steen and Val hear a groan.
We went over to the television as Steen could hear someone talking from it and we all heard coughing sound. Mandy feels like she wants to cry.
Val senses a lady in here and as she says the name of Elizabeth, Steen said the same name. Val thinks the lady is injured, Val gets the figure of a man dressed in a long hooded cloak but cannot see a face.
We held glass divination but only slight movement of no significant. A Cold breeze came up from underneath the table between Steen and Val.

Personal Reports
Val Butler
Vigil 2 Saloon Bar
On entering this bar I immediately became short of breath and felt sick, I was drawn to the corner where the gent’s toilets were. Steen Mandy and I sat at a table just outside the toilet but I couldn’t sit there for long, I had a horrible feeling about this space, so decided to move to a table that was out of view from the main part of the saloon.
I called out to spirit to come forward and immediately the television that was on the bar again out of view switched off, although on investigating it I could hear voices and coughing coming from it.
In my minds eye I could see a lady who was named Elizabeth and I felt she was injured in some way.
I stood in front of the fireplace with my hands on the beam above and sensed a large hunting dog lying on the floor in front of the fire, a dog that I would not stroke.
Whilst holding glass divination I could feel a cold breeze coming up from below the table. I felt that there was someone watching me the whole time I was in here. I cannot explain why but this bar really frightened me.
Vigil 3 Cellar
Like all cellars it was freezing in here, but I felt the atmosphere was disturbing. Whichever way I looked someone seemed to be looking really close into my face. I felt that there were bodies hidden behind the right side wall. I kept on turning around to see if I could see someone, it was so eerie, and as time was passing I got more and more agitated and wanted to leave the area. I then heard a groan and a shuffling sound close by me. The vision of a monk came to mind with a long dark cloak and hood but I could not see a face, and he seemed to have a limb missing. I noticed Steen and Mandy were becoming distressed and decided to leave this area.
Vigil 4 Kitchen
I felt alright in the kitchen, safe feeling, I called out to spirit several times but had no response. No other occurrences in here so I decided to go back to the saloon bar for a short time.
Saloon Bar
I thought we should try table tipping in here this time, Steen called out to spirit but no response. He placed a coin on its side and then asked spirit to knock it over, at the same time my batteries in the camera died and a loud bang was heard, just like a case lid slamming down, although I knew all cases were closed.
Vigil 5 Public Bar
As soon as I had sat down at a table in here I had a really sharp pain in my side, almost had me doubled over, when I mentioned this Steen told me he had the same pain in the same side all evening. I heard a ringing sound like a telephone but there were no telephones near to us. My head started to ache quite badly, but this went as soon as I went from the bar. Tried glass divination in here but nothing came through. Nothing else happened in here, I felt quite comfortable all the time.
Saloon bar Séance with all members
As the night was drawing to a close I decided that we all hold a séance, perhaps with all collective energies someone may come through to us. But I was disappointed as so much had occurred during the night’s investigation and nothing came through.
The Royal Oak is a charming 12th century building with much character, but I would not like to be there all alone.
Dwain has kindly has agreed we can return here again
Mandy Firth
Vigil 1 – Loft Area
I was sitting with my back to a corner of the loft and felt very uncomfortable and my back was very cold, Val stated that her back was also cold, Val called out and asked questions and for spirit to knock once for yes and twice for no.
It began to get very active, we found out through knocking that there was a 16 yr old boy, who was there in 1788 and his first letter of his name was k
He communicated that he was scared to go downstairs because there was a lady down there, then activity got very quite, so we decided to leave the loft but the whole time I was up there I felt like I was being watched and I felt very uneasy.
Val decided that we held vigils this time only 2 people at a time,
Just before I went I went up I heard what I thought sounded like voices coming through the camera in the loft.
I went up with Jim, we called out but it was very quite, when I got downstairs I was told that there had been a few light anomalies throughout the time that I was there.
Vigil 2 Saloon bar
We started by sitting at a table outside the toilets, I felt a little uneasy, we then moved over to the far corner which was out of site of the bar, Val called out I heard footsteps that sounded like they were coming down the stairs and into the bar, but there was no one there, Steen called out and that moment the TV that was placed on the bar round the corner from where we were sitting lost its signal.
Steen went to try to tune it back in but couldn’t. I went to have a look and heard voices coming from the TV although still no picture.
I heard a groan and also a loud bang coming from over by the corner I had just left, I then had an overwhelming urge to cry and got a bit upset, but as soon as the feelings came they went again.
Vigil 3 Cellar
I felt very uneasy down there, I felt there was a false wall in the cellar, and I also felt there were dead bodies behind it.
I felt a dull pain in my lower back the whole time I was down there, I felt it was very quite
I did hear a shuffling noise plus what sounded like a box being moved, I felt that the atmosphere turned very hostile and I wanted to leave, on the way out I heard a very loud click next to the stairs.
Vigil 4 Kitchen
I felt fine in the kitchen, no occurrences in here. Steen and Val called out, as it was very quite all of us decided to go back in the Saloon bar
Saloon Bar 2nd visit
I went back into the corner, when Val called out I heard a popping sound at the same time as Val’s camera battery died. I didn’t experience anything else in the saloon.
Vigil 5 Public Bar
I felt comfortable in this room. No occurrences in here.
Once we had all cleared everything away we all held one last séance in the saloon bar but it was very quite, I at that point went freezing cold and couldn’t stop shaking.
It was established that there was a man who wasn’t very nice and dominated women here but he was getting angry that we were there
At that point the men of the group left and the women tried to contact him but still nothing happened, all the while this was going on I still couldn’t stop shaking.
Overall this was a very good investigation, I felt a lot of emotions, which has never happened to me before, and I thank the landlady and landlord, for letting us into the workplace and home.
Jim Arnold
My first outing as team leader, and thanks to the team for making it so easy for me, you put the T in team, thanks.
Vigil 1- Loft.
Both teams started here, and it was a really great place with over 6 hundred years of history.
We all sat in a circle, with Ken watching the DVD downstairs. We tried using a glass without much luck. So Val asked for any one present to respond by knocking.
Gary heard a noise.
I felt that someone was hiding in the loft.
Between us we asked questions. Val asked if it was a male present. I heard 1 knock for yes. I asked if it was a boy, again we heard 1 knock.
I asked if they were hiding from a male that was downstairs, we heard 2 knocks. I asked if the lady down stairs was his mother, no answer. I asked if she was his girlfriend, no answer.
I asked if he was lonely there was one knock.
Val said she felt her back was very cold, and thought there was someone behind her.
At this point the EMF reading went up to 1.5. Emma and Mandy felt that someone was walking on the wood where we were sat; Mandy asked if we could feel the floor vibrating.
I asked if he was scared of the cameras, and offered to turn them off, no answer, (however we found that the cam recorder went off at his point.)
Val asked when he had died and we all heard the knock at 1788. Val also asked his age and we heard the knock at 16.
Val asked for an initial and was given the letter K, but the letters that followed did not make sense. I asked if not an English name, we heard 1 knock for yes. Gary suggested asking for the first letter of the country, but it al went quite.
Throughout this part of the vigil we all heard a number of taps, and felt we were being watched.
After we all left the loft, I decided I wanted to go back in to the loft on my own, I sat for about five minutes or so, it felt good, sad, but good. I saw a light anomaly, and heard what I believed to be footsteps coming towards me.
I asked if any spirit person would like to come and join me, I could feel someone, but had no further contact.
I returned to the loft with Mandy, again there were some noises, and the feeling of being watched.
The others when back to the loft two at time all as we watched downstairs. The cam was picking up a number of light anomalies.
This was one of the best displays I have seen so far.
Vigil 2 - Cellar
It was hard to get a reading in the cellar, because of the nature of the place.
My first thought was that someone was on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, and I wanted to step over them.
I asked Ken to check this point out he said he felt his was being dragged down.
One of the walls was false. I did not like this place.
I felt locked up, and very closed in, which I felt when I entered the pub at the start of the evening, I asked if there were any shackles, as I felt that people had been chained up.. I asked for anyone there to make themselves known to us, but no answer.
I had a funny taste in our mouth.
We all heard noises, but unsure as to where they had come from.
Ken says he hears breathing, and Emma’s, and my eyes smart.
I carried out a second EMF reading around this wall, the top was 1.2 -1.3 which was 1 point higher than the rest of the wall, and I could see no reason for this.
I said that I felt that this part had been used as a jail of some sort.
Ken said he felt a lady, and child had died behind the wall, I agreed and said I felt that she died on a table. I saw what I believed to be a doctor’s bag of sorts, with old time medical equipment, and that some sort of abortion had taken place.
Vigil 3 - Saloon bar
I was drawn towards the far end of the bar, and decided to hold a séance with the four of us.
I asked for the glass to move towards me if male, away from me if female, it moved away. Ken and I both felt very cold, I asked if it was her that was making us cold, the reply was yes.
I asked if she worked here, nothing.
I asked if she was held against her will, again no answer.
I asked if she knew the boy in the loft, the answer was yes.
Asked if she was his mother, no answer
Asked if she was English, the answer was yes.
At this point we all thought we heard something in the toilet.
I felt the presents of 3 in this bar, a lady, young girl, and a man.
I kept getting the name Elizabeth.
Vigil 4 - Public bar
We sat at the table and I suggested using the glass again, Ken and I called out, and the glass only moved the once, although I felt that it wanted to move more.
I believe I was being told about a near by tree where people would have been taken and hung.
As the vigil came to an end as I stood up I felt that I was going to be sick, once I left the bar this feeling left me.
Vigil 5 - Kitchen
I only spent a short time here I felt nothing other than being depressed.
We all decided to hold a séance in the salon bar before we left, as we all had something here.
Séance in Saloon bar
At the end of the night we decided to hold a séance with the whole group, and chose the saloon as this felt the right place.
This time I felt the presents of a man, this was time it wasn’t so nice. I felt he was very dominant and did not like women, and that the lady I felt earlier was frightened of him.
At this point I was not to stop, as he was getting very angry towards the three females at the table.
It was decided that the men should leave, and he was challenged by the girls, but he failed to do anything.
Overall I felt the pub was a very sad place, at times depressing, but the whole night was very enjoyable, and I think we all got something. The loft was the best for me, and the saloon bar was very interesting.
Emma MacDonald
Vigil 1 –Loft
This was really interesting I found. We asked questions in the loft and heard knocks as a response. I felt uneasy at first and then just intrigued.
I felt the floor move when the knocks happened and could find no logical explanation for it.
We discovered that it was a 16 year old boy who was afraid of a female entity downstairs, His first name began with a K and it wasn’t an English name. I felt that I didn’t want to leave the area and kept going back but I heard no more knocks after that.
Vigil 2 Cellar
I felt very uncomfortable in here; it was cold, damp and uneasy.
I thought I saw a shadow but was unsure and never saw anything else. I just felt like I didn’t want to be there and was glad when we left the area.
Vigil 3 Saloon Bar
We did glass divination here and only got small responses, didn’t feel anything at all.
Vigil 4 Public Bar
Again we did glass divination and had one strong response but nothing else. We also tried table tipping with no response.
Vigil 5 Kitchen
This place was quiet with no odd feelings or experiences.
Séance in the Saloon
All group members met in the saloon bar to hold a séance but nothing came through, Jim said there was an entity who didn’t like women, so Mandy, Val and I sat alone in the corner, taking turns on calling out to spirit but still nothing came through.
All in all a good night, especially the loft area and I would like to go back to re-investigate when there is no loud noise from the bar area.
Gary Hayes
I was very interested in this investigation as it was my first in a small group and in a small building. On arrival, the weather was cold and wet but the Royal Oak had a very welcoming feel. We met with our host for the evening Dwain Kent who showed us the way to the living room (our hub for the night) and as there were celebrations for St Patrick going on downstairs decided to concentrate on starting the vigils in the loft. I was in team two with Jim, Ken, and Emma.
Vigil 1 Attic all members
On climbing the steep stairs to the attic, it was amazing to see the original 14th century beams and it really made me think of all the history and events that this public house had gone through.
Val and Jim were taking turns in calling out and had a great response from all the questions that they were asking spirit. Emma and I were sitting on a loose sheet of timber and we both heard a knock in between us and at the same time I felt the board being pushed up. At the time I thought it may be someone below us messing around pushing on the ceiling, but on investigating further found the ceiling was solid plaster with no movement at all.
During my time in the attic, I felt fine and besides the knocking beside me had no other experiences
Paired Vigils.
I did not take part in the paired vigils, however I did watch on the television in the hub. It was interesting watching how the attic affected different people and the different experiences they had.
I found it quite amusing watching Val and Emma launch the walkie talkie across the attic when Ken tried to contact them!!! (Sorry Val and Emma).
Vigil 2 Cellar
I felt the cellar to be extremely cold as the air conditioning was on also cold from outside. It was noisy to with various machines still running. Ken and Jim picked up on various things but for me besides being cold I felt no presence or had any experiences there.
Vigil 3 Saloon Bar
We tried to conduct glass divination in here and there was only slight movement of the glass. I felt no presence or experienced anything unusual whilst in this room.
Vigil 4 Public Bar
Again, we tried glass divination in this room and although there was a sharp movement of the glass when we asked if anyone was there, the glass did not move again.
Once again, I felt no presence or had any experience in here I felt quite comfortable.
Vigil 5 Kitchen
The kitchen was interesting in the sense that both Ken and Emma felt uncomfortable whilst in here but could not explain why.
I felt nothing at all and didn’t experience anything unusual.
Séance in the Saloon
Both team joined together and decided to conduct more glass divination. Again very little happened. Jim had said he felt a very dominant male around and suggested that the girls Emma, Mandy and Val sat in the far corner. Val and Emma were calling out to provoke the dominant male unfortunately nothing happened.
We decided to end the night’s investigation here.
Conclusion
Although I had very little paranormal activity happen to me, I was very pleased with this investigation. The attic was interesting and I still cannot explain how the timber raised upwards.
It would be nice to investigate The Royal Oak again and I would like to thank Dwain and his family for allowing us to investigate.
Steen Spencer
Vigil 1 Loft
The loft is mainly joists and insulation with a small centralised floor-boarded area. We started off with all members and I was sat with my back to the loft’s point of entry. I felt that there was a presence to the right of the loft, but I kept having the urge to look behind me, as if someone was looking over my shoulder.
After calling out for a while, we got a knock reply. This knock came from underneath the floor-boards we were sitting on. It couldn’t have been from downstairs as there was quite a bit of space between the floor-boards and the insulation/ceiling below. Through a series of questions we determined that the presence was a sixteen year old male whose name began with a K. The replies seemed to stop, so we took a break.
We then split onto pairs I was with Ken. This time I sat facing the point of entry and could see various shadows moving in front of me (which was caught on camera).
I then felt very light headed and sick with cold sweats. I was trying to focus on the light coming in from downstairs when a face seemed to rush at me from right in front of me.
The face was of a young boy aged between ten and twelve, could this have been the male from earlier or a different one?!?!.
Vigil 2 the Saloon Bar
I didn’t really feel much in here. The name Elizabeth came into my mind at the exact time Val said the name of Liz. Could it be that Elizabeth told us her name and our subconscious’s heard?
When Val and I were calling out Val asked for anyone to show us that they were really here with us and the monitor viewing the night vision camera in the lost completely detuned and would not retune back again. I had to switch everything off and completely re-set it up.
Vigil 3 the Cellar
I didn’t feel anything to start with. There is a false wall that dissects the cellar with no way to get to the other side. This seems very strange as it is wasted space. What could be behind there! I called out with no success, so we discussed our thoughts amongst ourselves ignoring any presence that could be there, when Val, Mandy and I heard a loud bang from the corner, it sounded like someone had kicked a crate.
The whole atmosphere seemed to change suddenly and I didn’t like it at all.
There were more loud bangs on the machinery, like someone hitting it with force. I felt like the room was spinning and that something bad was about to happen, so we decided to leave.
Again one louder bang as we made our way out which was about ten inches away from my head. I envisaged that a presence was of a violent, angry man in his fifties with grey hair, mutton chop sideburns and cleanly shaven. It felt like he had lost his temper with us and wanted us out as we didn’t belong down there.
Vigil 4 the Kitchen
I didn’t feel anything at all in here
Vigil 5 the Public Bar
Again I never experienced anything at it in this area
Overview
This is a peculiar little pub with various presences in their own areas.
For me, the best area had to be the loft as it had the most activity.
Ken Taylor
Whilst all the members were holding a vigil up in the loft I remained in the hub to monitor on the television anything unusual happening there from the infra red camera I had placed in the loft earlier, and had caught some light anomalies from the left hand corner of the loft going downward.
After an hour I went into the loft with Steen only, and sat on a long flat board.
I felt very uncomfortable in here. I then heard a sound from behind me but could not say what it was. I saw a shadow from the right hand side of me going across the top of the staircase that led the way up into the loft.
Vigil 2 the Cellar
I felt cold in here, and had the feeling that beside the barrels was a lady with a baby.
I also felt that there were dead bodies behind the wall. I called out to any spirits to come forward but nothing occurred.
Vigil 3 The Saloon
We tried glass divination in here but nothing came through, I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all here
Vigil 4 The Public Bar
In here I felt cold and uncomfortable and felt a cold breeze go across my arms, again we tried glass divination but unfortunately the glass only moved very slightly.
I heard a sound to the back of me by the television that was placed on the bar, but again this sound could have been caused by the electric. No other occurrences in here.
Vigil 5 The Kitchen
All seemed very quiet in the kitchen, quite peaceful; I had no feelings at all in here.
We returned to the saloon bar, this time I felt that the large fireplace had been altered and originally there were two seats at either side and I could see an old man sitting to the left hand side.
We all held a séance in here at the end of the evening but unfortunately nothing came through.
We met with Dwain our host at 5am who gave us all some information on the Royal Oak and was quite amazed at what he told us.
This investigation was great, as a lot was recorded onto DVD from the loft, paranormal activity like I have never heard before.
Many thankyou’s to Dwain and his staff for letting us investigate his home and work place.
This was an eventful evening for us all, everyone had experienced something and we will talk about The Royal Oak for many months to come. A big thank you to Dwain and all his staff for making us feel so very welcome and we will take his offer to "come again" with pleasure.
