Marwell Hall

Marwell History

Marwell Hall is situated 6 miles south east of Winchester in the grounds of Marwell Zoo and was built around 1320 by Walter Woodlock, a relative of the Bishop of Winchester. The original building was a timber-framed structure and over the centuries there have been many alterations. The original medieval hall still remains. The name Marwell comes from the words ''mere" (meaning pool) and "well" (referring to a spring or body of water). Although there is no natural lake at Marwell, the nearest being Fisher's pond a mile away, there are several natural springs around the zoo. Although the land had been granted to Walter Woodlock by the Bishop, he did not initially have the King's permission to build there and the hall was built before this permission was granted.

During the 1500’s the Seymour family took over the ownership of the Hall. Local legend says that Henry V111 and Jane Seymour were married there and it also said that their son who later became Edward V1 was a visitor the Hall. They certainly were visitors to the hall on more than one occasion and the royal coat of arms and the initials ER was carved above the fireplace in the main hall.

On 2nd March 1644 60 Round heads who formed part of Waller's men were based at the hall as the troops pressed south. Cavaliers were based in Winchester and on an occasion after the Cavaliers had spent a greater part of the day drinking, they rode out to the hall to challenge Round heads. In spite of heavily outnumbering the 60 Round heads, the 200 Cavaliers went back to Winchester well and truly beaten.

It is said that in the late seventeenth century, the hall was visited several times by Charles II.

From 1799 the Long family owned the hall for some 40 years until the death of Alice Long. William Long made major alterations to the hall between 1813-1816, tearing down much of the existing upper 2 storeys and rebuilding them. This resulted in the building that still exists today. The large cedar tree that stands on the back lawn was probably planted during Long's time at the hall.

Between the period 1851 to 1862 John Gully owned the hall. He was a gentleman and a sportsman of the time. He was a boxer and trained race horses (although not at Marwell) and went on to become MP of Pontefract. He had two wives and 24 children.

Thank you

Our thanks go to Izzie and Regan at Marwell who made the groups visit possible but also to Maureen and Amanda for making all the arrangements. A Big thank you also to our guests from the zoo and friends who worked well with the SP UK Team and came to the event open minded and eager to investigate.

Personal Reports

Julie Harwood

I never bore of investigating Marwell Hall and it seemed such a long time since we had been there that I was extra excited this time. After arriving we had a quick tour of the Hall with Maureen as some of the group had not been there before and then got stuck in to setting up our plethora of locked off camcorders and experiments. Mark Wright and I concentrated on setting up his laptop and webcam with my camcorder covering the downstairs kitchen area as I knew (although Mark did not) that this is where Amanda had caught very interesting photos with strange red lights.

When we were all set up we split into our two teams and started on our first vigil. My team who at that time consisted of Maria, Mark W, Marie, Sarah, Alison, Eileen, myself and our guests Kieran, Karen and Jane who were more than familiar with the Hall. We decided that as we were on the first floor first we would stick together and all investigate the boardroom and small kitchen. We all settled ourselves in and started to take a few pictures. Alison and some other members of the team already had some strong feelings about this room including that it used to be a bedroom and that it had a male energy and two female energies in it. The man seemed to be the more prominent energy so we tried calling out to him, however as we were a team of mainly women we did not seem to be getting much response. Mark and Kieran then tried calling out and they seemed to get a much better response audibly and visually. Some members were seeing lights around the room and moving shadows. We also heard taps and a couple of times as Maria, Mark and I were stood by the main door, we heard the sound of someone scuffing carpet and/or footsteps outside of the door. Each time we opened the door quickly to catch anything or anyone outside but there was never anyone there and we could hear the team downstairs in the distance, too far away from us to be making noises unintentionally outside of the door. Eileen, Alison and Kieran who were at the fireplace end of the room kept observing strange temperature fluctuations. Kieran and Eileen could feel a cold draught that was undetectable with the temperature monitoring equipment so could not have been naturally occurring from a window or door and Alison was feeling a burning on one side of her face and said that she believed there had been a fire (not just from a fireplace) in this room. This was confirmed with the temperature gun as one side of her face was 6/7 degree’s hotter than the other side for no apparent reason. Maria and I then moved down to their end of the room and Eileen moved up to sit with Mark and Marie. I was now sat where Eileen had been and could definitely feel the draught even though Alison was still burning hot. Kieran and Maria who were stood together could hear noises from the kitchen area yet when investigated nothing was out of place. At one point we all heard a very loud sigh and quickly put it down to being from the wind outside however when Maria went and stood in the kitchen she said when the wind blew (and it was a windy night) the noise was nowhere near as loud as we had all heard it. I could have sworn that someone was stood to my right in the arched alcove and something that seemed to be moving kept catching my eye but whenever I looked all I could see was darkness. The overall feeling of this room was that we were being watched very intently but nothing would come forward enough to communicate with us. I believe Alison also felt like she was being blocked and unable to communicate with the 2 women. She believed there was a story to tell here about a love triangle between the 3 people and that somewhere along the line it also involved abuse or mistreatment of a child or young adult but it will be better to let Alison’s report tell more of that. I could feel an overwhelming arrogance in this room but I tried to keep quiet as I was more than aware what had been picked up in here before. Sarah caught a couple of moving light anomalies on camcorder near my end of the room and Maria and Kieran were sure that the door to the kitchen was moving slightly even though they had propped it open. Towards the end some of the group felt like there was a young, small child in the room as Marie had seem what looked to her like the head of a child bob up by the desk near Sarah. We called out accordingly but could not get much of a response apart from that every time Mark called out he got an exceptionally cold feeling on the back of his arms. This again was confirmed with the temperature gun. The front of Mark was between 5 & 6 degrees warmer than his back.

We decided for the last twenty minutes of our vigil to move to the corridor and see what we could pick up on there. Marie and I sat on the small green stairs while the others sat along the corridor behind us. The people in the corridor could smell the potent smell of urine but like it had been covered up by flowers or disinfectant. They likened it to the smell of an older people’s home or a hospital. Marie and I could not smell this but we were listening to the immense noise from downstairs. We highlighted this to the rest of the team and we sat and listened for a while. It sounded for all intents and purposes that the team downstairs were rearranging furniture. We heard a door bang twice and the noise of tables being moved, banged, dropped etc. We commented that they were being unusually noisy and having been caught out like this before, Marie noted the time. Knowing my group members and how quiet we know to be I called down to Maureen to see if it was them. The team downstairs confirmed they were being very quiet and that they were talking in whispers. I therefore cannot explain what we could hear as they certainly could not hear it! Sadly the batteries on our camcorders had died and so we have no recording of the sound.

After a short break we started on our second vigil on the group floor. Wayne and Cathy joined us and we split the group in two. Mark, Sarah, Alison, Kieran, Jane and Karen went into the library and Maria, Wayne, Cathy, Eileen, Marie and I went into the Mildmay room. This was a room we had never investigated before as it had always been our team room so it was interesting to see if we would get anything. I knew the stories of the recent sightings/experiences in there but the rest of the team did not. We took turns calling out and there seemed to be a general dislike of the far area to the right of the door. We saw on a few occasions flashes of light however we realised that this could be camera flashes from the team upstairs as part of the Mildmay room has a glass roof. We felt cold draughts in this room and I had a feeling of being watched but nothing seemed to make itself known to us. We decided to join the team in the library half way through a glass divination so we sat quietly as they picked up on someone related to aeroplanes and WW2. Two names were picked up on but forgive me for not remembering them; the other members will confirm these in their reports. The atmosphere when we went in to the room was nice. It was light and friendly however after about ten minutes the whole room changed and it felt very heady and uncomfortable. I believe everyone felt it one way or another apart from Maria which was strange. A couple of people felt sick including Cathy and I and others had stomach pains including Sarah and Eileen. Wayne had a headache and others could just feel the difference. I was watching Marie who was sat at the table with the team. She looked really depressed and sad and when I asked her if she was ok she said she felt very down and depressed. At this time the glass was hardly moving if at all and Alison commented that the reason everyone felt unusual was because of a more unpleasant and negative energy entering the room. The minute she said the word “negative” the glass on the table jumped, momentarily alarming the people sat with their fingers on it. This energy remained for the rest of the vigil and towards the end as we were all sat or stood at the table, Mark’s camcorder which was approximately 2 foot away from everyone in the team decided to make the noise of it closing/shutting down. At first not unusual until Mark advised us that the camcorder was turned off. I remember seeing Mark turn it off. Karen’s digital camera then died completely and Eileen’s camera which she had placed away from all of us on the table, moments later made the noise like it was taking a picture even though it was turned off! A fantastic end to a vigil and we apologise to the other team for running over time but you will see from above why we did.

After another short comfort break the whole group joined forces and held a séance in the Library. For some unknown reason and even though I can recollect the rest of the night I have no memory of that session. All I remember is worrying about Sarah as she looked like she was in a lot of pain. Apologies but I will have to let other members tell the account of this session.

The last vigil was a chance for groups to revisit area’s in teams of their own choice so to try and make sense of the evenings events Maria, Sarah and I decided to return to the library and we took Sarah’s divining rods with us as well as the glass that was in there from our vigil earlier in the night. It was very a strange atmosphere in there and Sarah was adamant not to be beaten by whatever was lurking there. I felt very resistant and felt very empowered for some reason. Maria and I called out trying to challenge any presence to come forward but again I felt like we were being watched. We tried the glass and it did not move a millimetre so Sarah decided to try the rods and after a while we did get some response. The air started to feel a lot lighter and we seemed to contact a lady that along with 3 other spirits (our relatives it was later confirmed) was trying to protect us. They were doing such a good job that the negative energy that the Lady was aware of and knew had left or was stood right back. We ascertained through the rods that her name was Lady Elizabeth and she used to live at the hall. Unfortunately time was no on our side and this vigil ended all too soon.

Thank you to Regan, Maureen and Amanda for making this night possible and to all our guests Julie, Kevin, Kieran, Karen and Jane. If there is any possibility in the future that we could stay all night then we would relish the chance as I think there is much more to be learnt every time we visit the hall and I know there would be the usual quick sign up if we did get to return.

Maureen Taylor

As usual an investigation at Marwell posed a few problems for me. Knowing the place and its history so intimately I have to think really carefully before I say anything at all during vigils and weigh up whether what I possibly sensing is coming through to me from an external source or whether it’s from my store of knowledge about the place. Similarly, I have to think carefully about what I say to others in the team, as I might give away information that might influence what they think they are sensing. So more often than not I just have to keep my mouth shut about things that I know are connected with the history of the estate and it’s people, and only mention anything that I’ve not come across before, which might or might not be connected with Marwell.

Vigil 1 – ground floor

We separated the team into two groups, me leading one half, Amanda the other. My group began in the kitchen corridor. Kevin seated himself on the cellar steps, with the door closed, and we could hear his muffled voice conversing with whoever or whatever was apparently rattling the right hand door at the bottom of the steps. Di started calling out, with little in the way of definite results. Several of us thought we heard a quiet click as she did so, but I suspect that this was coming from movement of one of the several doors along this corridor – the swing door at the bottom of the back stairs was in constant, though slight, movement the whole time we were there. I had the name Charles come into my head, and we tried calling out using that name, but again, no definite results. I had been feeling that there was a male presence very close to where I was standing, and Di seemed to sense him as well, and we felt that he was standing somewhere between the two of us. We got no conclusive responses from him though, and I now wonder if the name wasn’t his, but had come to me from elsewhere. In fact, later on in the vigil the words ‘King Charles Spaniel’ came into my mind, so I think that maybe the name I got was incorrect. A female was the next presence sensed, again by Di – who felt that this was a scullery maid, though whoever this was didn’t seem too happy about being called a scullery maid - - at which point I had an idea, and asked if she had worked her way up to being housemaid in charge of keeping the ground floor of the hall clean and tidy – this seemed more to her liking; all of which seemed to me to point to this being my young spirit friend, Beth Hardie. Di then said that she was getting a terrible pain in her head, I couldn’t at first think of any reason for it, then remembered that Beth had died when the cart she was travelling in overturned and she was crushed beneath it, so perhaps Di was sensing something from that occurrence. When we prised Kevin out of the cellar at the end of the vigil he said that at one point he had seen a light near the filing cabinet at the bottom of the cellar steps, and felt as if someone/thing was coming up the steps towards him.

We then moved on to the Long Room where we felt very little for the most part. Kevin called us over to the corner of the room by the old serving hatch and said that he had a cold spot that appeared to be following him around – several of us felt around where he said he could feel it, and sure enough, from about waist level down it was much colder than at any height above that. This, I am fairly certain was Michael, a young lad from 1534 (a date given to me on another investigation at the hall), who loves to untie shoelaces, so I warned Kevin to check them now and then just in case...

We moved on into the hall for our last few minutes, where several of us sensed a presence near the fireplace, but couldn’t identify it. Several of us sat round one of the tables, Kevin said his left hand had suddenly gone cold and he was getting a severe tingling sensation in it. By now it was time for the two halves of the team to swap ends of the hall, so we moved on to the library, Mildmay Room and Woodlock Room. We had only about 25 minutes in which to try and cover all three rooms, so only stayed briefly in each. Nothing to report from the Woodlock Room or the Mildmay, but in the library, Kevin said that he was getting a definite smell of pine, in fact, he said that he could ‘smell Christmas’ – by which time just about all of us were experiencing the same sensation.

Vigil 2 – the first floor.

We started at the top of the back stairs, then through to kitchen and the corridor area outside it. Apart from Di and I, who both sat down on the two chairs against the right hand wall of the kitchen and felt something moving past behind us over and over again – to and fro, nobody else picked up on anything here. Neither did any of us sense anything out in the corridor.

We swapped with the other half of the team and moved to the top of the main stairs. Kevin asked me if there were any dogs in spirit around the house, and when asked if he could describe the dog he was thinking of he said he felt that it was a black Labrador, female, and the name Bess. This, though the same breed and same colour wasn’t the dog I know of, but maybe there’s more than one. Julie reported that she could hear what sounded like creaking floorboards, the sound coming from the office next to where she was sitting. I then heard what I thought sounded like a cat miaowing, Kevin said he could hear a baby crying, and some of the others had heard it too. Kevin, Di and Regan then heard what sounded like someone giggling near the top of the stairs. Di then wandered down the stairs to the half landing and looked out of the window, where she said she could see a carriage approaching, and sensed the presence of a young girl pacing to and fro apparently very excited about the impending arrival, but couldn’t get any information out of the girl about who she was or why she was so excited about the carriage.

Vigil 3 – group vigil in the library

Fairly quiet to begin with, but then I could sense someone standing behind me, and Alison sitting next to me felt that it was someone very unpleasant who wasn’t at all happy about our being there. Someone, she felt, that was connected with the church in some way. Other things came up during this group séance that led me to think that we might have not one but two male spirits with us. One of whom I’ve not encountered before, but may have been something to do with the Woodlock family which included several churchmen among it’s number, including Henry who was bishop of Winchester in the early 1300s; and the other I suspect was Rowland Standish who was doing his best, as he so often does, to mislead us somehow and make things seem other than what they really were.

During the course of the vigil the table nearest to Maria seemed to move several times – she had her shins resting likely against it and the table jolted quite sharply against them.

Vigil 4

This was a free choice vigil and we could revisit any room or area that we wished to. I really hadn’t come across any area that I particularly wanted to head back to, nothing of any great moment had come through for me, so along with Kevin and Julie, who wanted to talk over what they had sensed through the evening so far, I stayed in the man hall and chatted to them, answering any questions they had about the hall and its estate.

Finally the time to pack up and go home had arrived, and we managed to clear up and get away just before midnight – thinking that we would all be driving through the heavy rain and strong winds that had been howling around the building for much of the evening, but I for one was pleasantly surprised to find that once on my way home, the wind had dropped and the rain almost stopped.

It was good to be able to go to Marwell for another investigation, it being about two years since our previous one. My thanks to those at the hall who allowed us back in again, and to Regan, whom I hope we didn’t scare too much during the evening...

Amanda Horley

Having close connections to Marwell I always enjoy revisiting for an investigation and as it has been some time since we were able to visit it was great to be coming back especially as several of the group had not investigated here before. I get as much pleasure out of seeing others pick up on spirits and energies that I know, as I do picking up on things myself.

We were split into two teams and Maureen and I decided to split our team again to have two smaller groups at each end of the building. My team started out in the library. I felt that there was a presence in one corner of the room by the fireplace, and when I asked Mark to stand there he felt that he was being pushed forward. I got the distinct impression that he was standing in exactly the same spot as the spirit who I know from previous investigations. We moved into the Woodlock room, and although this was a quiet area for me, other members of the team felt that there were people there, and Matt picked up on a party or ball. On several occasions, the door to the stairs rattled. Although this could have been caused by it being a windy night outside, there are several other doors between it and the outside, so it is very unlikely that it was drafts causing the rattling. We also went into the Mildmay room, but this was also a quiet area for me.

We then moved to the other end of the ground floor, in the kitchen corridor, and started out down the cellar steps. Mark, Sandy, Emma and I stood at the bottom of the steps whilst Matt sat at the top. I felt that there was someone stood behind me, and then as the feeling disappeared, Emma felt that someone had stood directly in front of her. We then moved into the main hall. There were several knocks and bangs coming from in here, and again one of the internal doors appeared to rattle on a couple of occasions. After a time I felt that there was a child standing to my left hand side, and the air certainly felt cooler there. When Matt came and stood there, he felt that his lower leg was considerably colder. Unfortunately, this was the end of the vigil, and as the others started coming into the hall, both Matt and I felt that the child had disappeared under one of the tables.

After the break, our group moved upstairs, and my team started our vigil in the boardroom, which is now used as an office. I sat in front of the fireplace and although we asked out, nothing seemed to be happening. I did however feel that there was someone in there with us, standing between me and the kitchen door, by a large printer. He wouldn’t interact with us, but when Mark took a picture into that area, there was a large orb in front of the printer. When we moved to the other end of the first floor I got the distinct impression that there were a lot of people of the stairs. They seemed to be going up and down quite fast and were chattering away to each other. Matt had moved round the corner to the small set of stairs, and called me round there. He had picked up on a man that he felt was the same one he had sensed in the Woodlock room. From what he had said downstairs, I was fairly sure that this was our old friend Rowland. The information tied in with what had been picked up on previous investigations, and also the manner in which it was given. A “glossy” version of events was being given to Matt, but I requested that Rowland tell the truth, as I could tell Matt the story anyway, and after that the information being given to Matt was a more accurate version of events.

Following the next break we had a group séance in the Library. I did feel colder on my right side at one point, but for me this was quiet, although other members of the group did pick up on spirits in the room. There did seem to be some confusion over who was being picked up on, and it is possible that they had encountered someone who we do not have met previously. Certainly, Alison’s church connection that she was getting was entirely plausible, although she could not have known about that part of the history of the Hall, as we are not able to go up to the top floor of the building these days.

After the next break we had the opportunity to return to an area of our own choice. Matt wanted to talk to Rowland again and asked me to go along. We sat on the stairs, and I had the impression that Rowland was standing at the top and that if Matt moved his hand forward a few inches he would be touching Rowland’s shoe. At the same time Matt got the impression that if he moved his hand then Rowland would stand on it. Again I was able to confirm that the information that Matt was getting with regard to Rowland was accurate. I felt that Rowland was being “well-behaved” for him, although all I could pick up was a general impression of him rather than any specific details. At one point, the group lower down the stairs were picking up on a lady, and Matt got the impression that Alice was standing near us. He felt that Rowland considered her to be a “goody goody church goer”. Matt could not have been aware of Alice’s involvement with the local church and the legacy she left for it to use for the local poor.

Once again, Marwell did not disappoint and it was a pleasure to see people who hadn’t investigated there before picking up on the various energies around the place. Let’s hope it is not another 2 ½ years before we return again.

Maria Street

Marwell is a bit special for me as it was the first investigation I did with Southern Paranormal. It had been over 2 years since our last visit and we were very lucky to be able to return. I had made a wish the night before that the rain would lash and the wind would howl for the night as I love a good atmosphere. My wish was certainly granted! I arrived with Di just before 5pm and the others arrived very soon after. We set up our team room in the entrance hall and put our locked off cameras and trigger object experiments in place.

We started our first vigil early and I was in team 1 with Julie, Alison, Eileen, Mark W, Sarah, Marie and our guests, Kieron, Karen and Jane. We started on the 1st floor and made our way to the boardroom. We spread ourselves around and settled down. Alison picked up on a man in the corner of the room where Kieron was stood, just at the entrance to the kitchen, and there were certainly knocks coming from this area. Changes of temperature were also reported here. Alison felt this man was just watching and would not come forward because of a scandal involving him and two women. She felt the two women were also present but were prevented from coming forward by this man. She also felt he had a connection with trains. Julie and I were stood by the other entrance door and we could distinctly hear knocks and shuffling noises coming from the corridor outside. We stood out there and asked for the others to call out again. Marie did and we could actually feel the floor move beneath our feet and we could hear the floorboards creaking. I have to say that we had positioned ourselves so we were not stood on any creaky or wobbly floorboards. It was also interesting that it happened straight after Marie called out. We returned to the room and I went to stand with Kieron by the kitchen door. At one point I felt that Julie had walked past me but she was still sat in the same place. Luckily (I think it was Eileen) had thought this too. We also heard a strange rumbling noise coming from the kitchen so I stood just inside to see if I could decipher where the noise was coming from but I couldn’t. What I did notice was that the door appeared to be moving backwards and forwards. I just couldn’t work it out so asked Kieron if he could see it too and he could. I asked if the door had opened in the past and Kieron confirmed that members of staff had heard noises from the door. Mark was feeling cold by the filing cabinets and the laser thermometer confirmed a fall in temperature. Although the wind was howling outside, the heating was on and Mark was stood closer to a radiator than anybody else. We made our way into the main corridor and Julie and Marie sat on the stairs whilst the rest of us sat all along the corridor. Alison had seen a figure disappear into the room I was sat opposite, so I called out for this spirit to join us, but to no avail. There was however, a lot of noise coming from downstairs, prompting Julie to call downstairs to ask the other team if they were moving around, but they were still, and thought we were on the move. We could feel a cold breeze at times, but the wind was howling by this point and this could have been a draught.

We went for our first break, and then carried on with our next vigil on the ground floor. By this time, Wayne and Cathy had arrived and joined our team, so we split in half to cover more ground. I went with Julie, Wayne, Cathy, Marie and Eileen into the Mildmay Room. We sat quietly and called out. We saw flashing lights but couldn’t be sure if they came from another team taking pictures. Marie and Julie both saw red lights at different times but the room proved otherwise quiet so we made our way to the library to join the rest of the team. They were in the middle of a glass divination so we sat and watched. Alison had picked up on the presence of a man from the 14th or 15th century and he was connected to the church. She felt he was very powerful and very nasty. A couple of people reported feeling sick and others experienced headaches or stomach aches. I felt fine though. In fact I felt almost serene. The glass was very reluctant to move and some of us joined in but it would not move. We went for our next break, and then both teams joined together for a séance in the library. We all sat round and called out. After a while, Julie asked if anybody felt like they wanted to pray, and it was only then that I realised how I was sitting. I was leant forward with my elbows resting on the table and my hands were clasped under my chin as if in prayer. It felt very comfortable and not at all wrong. It wasn’t long after that, that the table shifted and it continued to creak throughout the séance. Sarah felt that a lady had joined us and she felt quite haughty but the lady was friendly.

After a quick cup of coffee, we went back to the place where we had felt the most activity. This for me was the library and I went back with Julie and Sarah. We sat down and challenged anything negative that may be in the room with us. We tried the glass but once again it would not move, but the table creaked again. Julie felt she had seen a dark shadow to the left of the fireplace so I took a picture. A light anomaly showed up near the floor and on closer inspection very clearly shows a man’s face. I am not a great believer in these so called orbs, but this was very impressive. We carried on with the rods as Sarah felt the lady was back. I had a feeling there was a very slight chance we had Jane Seymour with us. As I am writing this, I know how ridiculous that sounds, but that’s how I felt. On closer questioning though, the rods indicated the lady’s name was Elizabeth and she was a titled Lady. Later on, I discovered it was more than possible that the lady was actually Elizabeth Seymour, aunt to Jane. This concluded our evening at Marwell and we packed up our cars in the midst of lashing rain and howling wind. I think the others were cursing my wishful thinking! I would like to thank Maureen and Amanda for arranging the evening and Regan for allowing us in. I would also like to thank our guests for joining us and I hope you all had a good a time as we did.

I had no idea what to expect when this investigation came up. I'd been to Marwell Zoo years ago and knew of a house in the grounds but no more. It was perfect investigation weather; windy, heavy rain and that lovely misty air than gives everything an air of mystery and atmosphere.

The house was beautiful from the outside and reminded me of a typical ’haunted’ mansion. Inside, there were huge heavy wooden doors, large windows with window seats and panelling. It was truly stunning!

I went with Amanda and Eileen for a very brief tour in which Amanda showed me rooms of 'interest' but said no more. The first room being the Boardroom. I sensed lots of activity in this room immediately. I felt the centre of that room is one of the portals where spirit energy comes in to the building and that a large circular table should have been in that space rather than a small computer desk. I sensed a man who was hovering as if holding back and a lot of sadness. More on this later. I was also drawn to the Library and the main stairs.

When the investigation started the team I was in went back to the Boardroom first. I suggested some ‘omming’ to get the energy to flow. I immediately sensed the man again and felt his energy was by the blocked - in archway in the corner of the room. He appeared to be dressed in 18th century clothing. His facial expression was austere. His personality was strong but I didn't feel threatened as such by him. I picked up that he could be very difficult with men he had dealings with but had a charming, softer side with woman. He did have good qualities that woman found attractive but another side to his personality could be unpredictable and offensive! There were two ladies around him too. They seemed timid and shy, gentle sorts who were kept in line by this gentleman. I saw many lights, tiny little pin pricks of lights all over the room but the main concentration of energy was around the blocked in archway and the door to the kitchen. Other members heard knocking, taps and footsteps in the corridor. I feel the energy of this man remained there throughout our vigil. I sensed two children running around that would have been no older than seven years old. There was also a third but this baby was lost to a miscarriage. They were connected to one of the woman. I sensed very strongly that the father of these children was NOT who everyone assumed it to be and that that somewhere there was an affair, love triangle situation and emotional abuse. I sensed a toy rabbit and a ball with these children and felt that they played in the corridor, often fearful though. This room was a bedroom. I heard clairaudiently the name Margaret and the word 'train' connected to the gent. I feel somewhere in his life there would have been a connection with trains. He had a throat and chest condition and suspect smoke was to blame, perhaps though not tobacco, I wondered if it was smoke. Later in the vigil my face started to burn. Julie zapped me with the temperature gun and there was a marked difference from one cheek to the other. It was very uncomfortable. Then the team moved to the corridor and sat quietly for a short while. I saw a dark shadow go in to the marketing room which we weren't allowed in for security purposes. I felt this room to also have an energy inside it and think phenomena happens in there. This room was also a bedroom and for some reason it was connected to the Boardroom. I heard clairaudiently the name Travis and the word Canterbury but this was a place rather than a name. I feel there is a link to Canterbury in Kent and wonder if it has a religious connection, as in Canterbury Cathedral? I sensed a man connected to the other gent from the boardroom. He was smaller and subservient. He could NOT be trusted and was a real shady character. His features were like that of a rat, his face suited his personality. The first gent had some kind of disagreement with this man, they didn't get along... There was also the suggestion of someone being tied to a chair, bound and gagged in the vicinity (not necessarily the room) of the Boardroom.

Next we went to the Library. I got the feeling that there's writing on a wall or on paper behind some panelling near the largest window in this room. Writing is definitely hidden. At first it was serene and calm. We all felt rested and peaceful. I sensed this room had at some point been used as a dorm as I saw many beds and sheets. I felt a connection to WW2 with this room and wondered if it was used for recovery after injury... With this in mind a sensed a man called Tom/Thomas with a surname of possibly Corbitt (possibly American) who slept/recovered in this room. He showed me bandages and for some reason he couldn't walk properly, he shuffled. He was always over by the door as if trying to 'escape'. He had a connection with aircraft (Tiger Moth). He felt like someone who tinkered with planes and had an interest in engines etc. I'm not sure if he was ranked in the army but he had an army connection. He had a close friend and helper called Charles who seemed to have a learning difficulty and needed support to either hear or see... Charles has links to the outbuildings of Marwell House and is possibly sensed more over there than the house. Some members of the team were doing glass divination when as soon as I said I felt the presence of someone negative the glass jumped. It was at this point things went downhill and the room felt menacing and as if we weren't welcome. I heard the name Edward. I sensed a small man wearing something on his head and links to a church on the site in the direction of the huge fireplace, almost behind it. I'm going back hundreds of years. He made me feel very uncomfortable, heart pounding, headache, awful. The other members of the team had joined up 10 minutes before. There was some very unusual camera activity which excited the group! I also picked up on a boy of around 16 being hung in the vicinity of the library (the area not the room as such). There were also strange torch like lights in the grounds just outside the windows of the library as if someone walking in the grounds.

Whilst on a short break, standing outside with just Sandy Rutter, I saw someone move from out of a bush under the window (to the right as you approach the house from the drive) and disappear. I had assumed it was another team member until they vanished!

The whole team decided to venture into the Library again. We sat around huge tables and asked for spirit to affect us. I say with my back towards the fireplace and felt more uncomfortable than before, as if being dragged backwards. I felt very strongly there was someone standing behind me. My heart pounded, my head throbbed! Others reported nausea, headaches, tummy pain. I feel this was the negative person again. I feel he was unhappy about us being in his 'church' and that we were doing the work of Satan! I became so uncomfortable I swapped seats with Matt. The atmosphere at the top of the room (away from the fireplace) wasn't as threatening and my symptoms faded.

After a short break we had free reign of the house and I decided to go back to the main staircase. I'd been drawn there earlier. I sensed the presence of a woman called Elizabeth who wore a dress with lots of skirts and she kept showing me her powered face. The dress was light creamy/yellow but with light blue skirts underneath. Her face was heavily powered and I smelt a fragrance that smelt pleasant and of herbs. She was at the house in the 16th century. Although to the outside world she appeared strong, I sensed a great deal of sadness linked to her being at the house. She seemed to be waiting, yearning for something/someone.

I had a quick look about the gent’s toilet but didn't feel anything really. A possible scratching sound perhaps?

All in all this could well be my favourite investigation so far! I felt privileged to attend and meet so many lovely people in the team I've not met before. I would love to go back again!

Sarah Couper

This was my second visit to Marwell Hall and I was looking forward to it as I had enjoyed the first one so much. I took some photos whilst most of the team went on a quick tour. I picked up some light anomalies on some of these.

Vigil 1 – Upstairs
Team – Myself, Mark W, Julie, Maria, Marie, Alison, Eileen. Kieron, Jane and Karen.

Boardroom – In this room a number of taps were heard, especially from the room next door and the hall outside. I was filming on this vigil so other members of the team went to investigate. Noises were still heard by them but they could not be accounted for. In here I felt sleepy, and then very cold. I also heard a loud sigh behind me; however, I had my back to a wall! On film I may have caught some light anomalies.

Hallway – Team members were hearing noises and picking up on smells. Personally I only heard a couple of noises from the area we had just come from. Again I was filming but do not think I caught anything on camera.

Vigil 2 - Library
We split the team in half. The team I was in went to the library.
Team Myself, Alison, Mark W, Karen, Kieron and Jane.

We had a special light set up in the library so I switched it on and explained the idea behind it before switching off the main light. We asked out and began getting some faint tapping which we could not explain. The door rattled and there was no one the other side – however, it could have been due to a breeze as it was a very windy night. Alison was picking up some American air force men in the room and confirmed that these were who were responsible for the tapping but their energies were very weak. We decided to try a glass divination – at first we got no response to calling out. Ali told us to address our questions to Tom, and we started to get some very small slight movements. We got more when Mark W asked out. The rest of our team joined us (Julie, Marie, Maria, Wayne, Cathy and Eileen) we still had our fingers on the glass as we were welcoming them in to join us when the glass ‘jumped’. At this time we felt the energy change in the room from a light interested one to a heavier negative one.

Members of the team began to feel sick including myself, and some headachy. I started to get a strange taste in my mouth. Ali confirmed that a new spirit had joined us who was not very nice and quite angry, he was a religious man and considered that we were doing the devils work. We got no responses to calls out whilst using the glass so w changed over to all women. Again no responses, so we changed to all men and they started to get movement, I took some photos during this time and a couple of light anomalies appeared. We heard taps and the door rattled again. We tried asking the spirit to do other things apart from affecting us but nothing happened.

Vigil 3 – group séance – Library.
All of the team members attended this.

Ali picked up on the negative spirit again. Team members reported feeling sick and headachy again. I kept get a tingling feeling like something was stepping through me, several teams, and I wanted to say bitch. I started to get very upset and tearful. Julie asked if I wanted to change seats or leave the room but I said I did not want to let it beat me. We asked out again for other phenomena but again it was only affecting us. Matt picked up on someone, we thought was the same spirit, but I began to get the impression he was picking up on another, and the first spirit was slightly manipulating this new spirit and Matt.

I became aware that I was being over shadowed by a female spirit, my posture and voice changed noticeably to the group. All I could tell was this person was a ‘lady’; she was haughty and looked down on the group but not negatively. She was there to protect us, and was not going to allow this negative spirit to interfere with us. Matt came and stood behind me and I felt that the lady had turned to face him, I also felt like I was being pushed away from him. When he took a step back I felt able to sit upright. Matt sat back down but I felt like I must watch him and also had the desire to get up and in some way ‘exorcise’ him. I felt very tired after this vigil.

Vigil 4 – Library
Team Myself, Julie and Maria

We again encountered the negative spirit; he began effecting Julie and Maria. I think that I was unaffected due to the presence of the lady; however, I was aware of a couple of children (young girl and boy running in). We challenged him to do something else but nothing. We tried using rods but we got no responses and the same happened when we used the glass. I took some photos every now and then in here and got some light anomalies.

We challenged the spirits beliefs instead and suddenly the energy dissipated almost as if we confused him. I tried the rods and we began to get responses. We were told that there were four spirits in the room three were related to us but one was not. The one that wasn’t was the lady that had previously overshadowed me. We found out that she only knew the negative spirit in the spirit realm, and that she was not afraid of him at all. She was a titled lady and was linked to the hall. Her name was Elizabeth. Unfortunately, we ran out of time which was a shame as I would have liked to have found out more about Elizabeth.

All in all I enjoyed this visit to Marwell, and felt I had encountered some new phenomena on this visit.

Introduction

Ever since joining Southern Paranormal UK I had been dying (if you pardon the pun!) to investigate this wonderful building. I have visited the zoo on numerous occasions and had always wondered what lay beyond its walls. I was extremely hopeful about this investigation as I had heard lots of stories about previous investigations and I hoped that this one would be as active.

Vigil 1 – Boardroom

At the start of the vigil Alison suggested we tried an ‘om’ chant to increase spirit activity and energy levels. We all stood in a circle and held hands and did the ‘om’ chant in short 30 second bursts. This did seem to make the atmosphere appear heavier.
After calling out I heard numerous taps and thumps. I also saw what I thought was the top of a child’s head behind a desk as if they (although it looked like a girl) were walking behind the desk as it seemed to ‘bob’ along. Could this have been my first manifestation? I tried to think what else if could have been and to date I cannot think of anything.

I also saw a light anomaly go across the same desk later on in the vigil.

Corridor by main staircase

I experienced nothing unusual in this area but caught an orb on camera by the main staircase.

Vigil 2 – Mildmay room

On the walk round at the beginning of the evening I felt a very oppressive atmosphere in this room but on the vigil the atmosphere had completely changed.
I saw 2 red blinking lights near the floor and a small white light above the door. There was also a clock in the room with a loud ticking mechanism, but it appeared to change in volume, one moment it was quite audible the next much quieter.

Library

Whilst sitting at the table it seemed to vibrate as I could feel it shaking under my hands.
Alison informed us that there was a negative presence in the room, most of the team felt either sick or had a headache, I on the other hand just felt depressed and I had been in good spirits up until then!

Vigil 3 – Library

We joined as a group for this vigil and settled down at the table and Alison did protection for the group.

During this vigil I kept getting a tingling sensation on my face and again the table moved on a couple of occasions.
I also heard two footsteps behind me which were verified by Wayne.

Vigil 4 – Main Staircase

We had the opportunity of investigating a place of our choice. I decided to go to the main staircase as I had heard that it is quite active.
Alison picked up a lady in a beautiful gown at the top of the stairs who refused to come down, possibly because of us sitting on the stairs.

I took lots of camcorder shots but unfortunately did not pick anything up. I also did not experience anything unusual on this occasion.

Conclusion

This was a fantastic building and held a lot of promise. My favourite room is hard to say because I got lots of activity in the Boardroom (with maybe my first sighting!) however the atmosphere in the library was very peculiar and that tingling sensation I felt on the one side of the face was strange.

I would like to thank the owners and staff for letting us investigate this lovely building and I hope to return in the very near future.

Di Moore

This is my second visit to Marwell Hall, the first time was about three years ago and was my very first investigation with Southern Paranormal UK. As a novice then I was looking forward to going back to see whether I could pick up on anything, I was not disappointed.

My first impression was it looked smaller. Weather:- Wet and very windy.

Walk round. Maureen took us round and told us some of the history this was fascinating. Now to start our vigils.

Kitchen Corridor.

This was a long corridor with a door to the cellar. We walked up and down and settled in. I found I wanted to stand under the Arch which was old and cold, I called out to spirit, I had cold feelings up my arms and thought this is a spirit. The name Mary came into my head, Maureen said no. I had to move which was strange, then I felt that my head was throbbing and had my hands on my head. An accident came into my head. Maureen said this was Beth and would tell me what happened after the vigil, Maureen went and got her Rods we asked questions but not a lot happened after that, we did hear some taps.

Long Room.

Maureen picked up on the name Michael as Kevin’s hand went cold like someone was holding on. I was stood the other side of the room and noticed my hands where in a praying position. It, felt like people prayed here. Maureen said there was no Church on this site.

Library.

On walking into the Library both Kevin and I smelt a strong smell of pine. Kevin said he felt it was Christmas trees. I sat down next to the fireplace and got that someone (male) was either killed or was buried under a pine tree (at this stage I was staring out of the window).

Mildmady/Cold Room.

Nothing for me. I did get a cold shudder on entering, but there were no drafts coming though the windows, as I investigated them.

Main Stairs.

What a wonderful stairway. I just loved it. Kevin picked up on a Black Dog in the corridor and the name Bess ( Dogs name). I sat on the stairs and could sense a Lady at the bottom I asked her to come up. After a while I went down as I could sense she was still there, (at this stage we were all at the top of the stairs). I kept talking to her as I paced up and down at the window. She seemed to be waiting for someone to turn up as the window overlooked the drive and entrance, then in my mind I could see Horse and carriage coming from a distance but they never arrived. I was still pacing up and down and felt she was so excited but also sad.

Library. Group Seance.

Not a lot for me. I just felt someone was pulling my arm to get me up or wanted me out.

Free Vigil. (we could go where we wanted ). The stairs for me.

Ross and I went to the Main Stairs only to find a lot of the group was there. I settled in, sitting on the stairs and still got this Lady but this time she was up the top. We called out to her but she would not come down, Alison went up and got the Elizabeth, then Alison and I went into the gents toilets as this was once a dressing room or bedroom. There was nothing for me but Alison saw sparkly lights coming from the cubicle.

I had a good night at Marwell, wish we had more time on each vigil but had a lot to cover.

Thank you Marwell for letting us visit your beautiful House.

Mark Pettet

This was my first visit to Marwell so I was eagerly looking forward to the night’s proceedings. I set two locked off cameras. One at the bottom of the spiral stairs, and the other one right at the top in the attic with a Christmas tree trigger object that Maureen supplied. When setting up this camera I had already seen a light pass across the tree, so I was looking forward the watching the footage from this.

Team. Amanda, Matt, Emma, Sandy and Myself

1st vigil was in the library.

We all heard the door creak a few times and a few small bangs but nothing of great noise. Amanda was calling out while standing in the corner and asked me to come and stand next to her and see if I could feel anything. There was a cold area behind me and at one stage it felt like I was gently being pushed forward in the back, Amanda said you are probably standing on their toes to which I said sorry and moved forward. A few light anomalies were caught on film. Also two were caught on stills camera at the same time and the same size as what Sandy had seen. Moving on to the next two rooms these were a lot quieter than the first.

2nd Vigil upstairs.

The team went into what was marked up as the board room. Quiet at first. A few pictures were taken. I had been taking pictures when Amanda felt a presence near the door to the kitchen. I had taken a picture prior to calling out and had caught an orb halfway along the printer in the corner.

3rd Vigil group séance

This was interesting to hear what other team members were feeling and sensing, but for me I didn’t experience anything here.

Marwell is a fantastic place and hope to go back sometime.

Sandy Rutter

Eileen Julie Mark Wright and I arrived first and we met Maureen on the way in and Amanda was stood at the door way to greet us. My first thought of the building was yes it was going to be a fantastic night I couldn't wait to get started. Once we were inside Maureen gave us a tour of the building and Maureen was very informative on dates and people who used to live there. It was a even better place inside. It’s a good job I didn't have a lorry parked outside as the doors would have been gone. They were very big and solid and beautiful doors.

The rest of the team arrived and got the tour whilst Julie and I did the equipment for the teams.

Vigil 1
The Team was Amanda Mark P Emma Matt and myself

We started off in the library. We took a few pictures and Amanda called out and almost straight away the door rattled. I thought it was impossible as the door was big and solid so that was a very good start. Emma and I were at the top of the table whilst Amanda, Mark and Matt were at the bottom so I moved round to where they were. Amanda moved back closer to the fireplace and she was feeling cold spots. I had my temperature gun with me and measured only 4c. Matt was picking on a few things and wanted to go into the Woodlock room where a locked off camcorder was as who ever Matt was picking up wanted us to go in there, so we did. I was filming near the door that separated the two rooms and I filmed a light coming toward me from the window. I then went back into the library. I am glad I did I got some orbs on the camcorder. I got two orbs going straight up and Mark got the same two on camera. We then went into the Mildmay room. It was really cold in here because of the low roof and there was a large glass area that covered most of the roof. We took a few pictures and the orbs I got in one were like the picture had measles. That was it for in here.

We then moved to the other end of the ground floor and we went into the cellar bit first and again Amanda called out but nothing really happened in here. So we went into the Tudor Hall where we had our kit and we took a few pictures. Amanda called out and the big door behind me rattled but there was no wind to do this and it was big and solid so I don't think the wind could have rattled it anyway. We caught a few orbs.

Vigil 2
The Team was Amanda Mark P Emma Matt and myself

We started upstairs and went into the boardroom, now an office with adjoining kitchen to it. Again I was filming and between Amanda and the kitchen there was a printing machine and just above it I caught an orb. Amanda got up and walked near the kitchen as she had a strong feeling of someone there. Amanda accidentally banged into a table and I got an Orb in front of her. We stayed in the office for about twenty minutes and then we swapped with Maureen's team we went down to the end of the corridor. I went down to the middle landing of the stairs to see if I could get the same picture that Julie got on a previous investigation here, but I didn't. Amanda and Matt sat on the corridor steps and Mark, Emma and I were on the main stairs. We were taking a few pictures and the number of orbs was really good. Amanda suggested Mark and I go into the men's toilets so we went in and we stayed there for about ten minutes and we came out because we didn't get anything.

Vigil 3
Team: every body

For the group séance we were all in the library. Julie started calling out and the table moved at the fireplace end of the room. Sarah was feeling a presence of a woman who was making her angry and depressed and the table nearest the fireplace continued moving. Matt had the feeling there was a holy man in here with us.. I thought the presence was more the opposite, not good but evil. I was looking up at the ceiling all the time as I could have sworn there was something flying about but couldn't see him. If the camcorder was on me you will see Ii had a smile on my face as I was glad Sarah was getting depressed and angry (sorry Sarah).

Vigil 4
The Team was Mark Wayne Cathy Regan and myself

This vigil was a do what you like vigil, so to speak. We went up into the boardroom and I got a few orbs again in here and we all saw a light from the car park but it was a reflection from something. We came out of here and we went into an office near the men's toilet. We called out in here and there was a zoo walkie-talkie that was switched off but was making a noise as if someone was trying to contact us through the walkie-talkie. That was it for in here so we went to another office which was very clean and spacious. Mark, Wayne, Cathy and Regan all found seats and I was stood in the middle of the room filming. I got an orb going up the wall near the door. That was it for in here.

I would just like to thank Amanda and Maureen for arranging a beautiful place to investigate and hope for a return visit.

Eileen Rutter

We drove up to quite a large, old stone house with a big stone door way at the front going into a large hall with a big old fireplace. Had a quick walk round to see layout and took several photos with some orbs on. The walls had lots of animal painting hanging on them.

Vigil 1

We went up to the office/boardroom. Alison picked up on the fact that it used to have a large round table in there. We all made ourselves quiet and we heard some noises and footsteps out in the hallway. When we looked there was nothing there. I sat on a chair with my back to the fireplace and felt a few cold breezes as if someone was standing to my right side. The weather outside was starting to get wet and windy. We went and sat in the corridor between the two stairways. It was very quiet along there as I sat on the floor with just a few breezes going back and forth along the landing.

Vigil 2

We split into two small groups and we went into the room at the end of the building. We sat down quietly and called out. There were a couple of noises and some flashes up above where the large glass roof was along with a few cold draughts but it was very windy outside. We decided to go and join the others in the library. They were sitting down doing a glass divination talking to someone with the name Charles or Tom and something about a Tiger Moth which was a war plane. I went to sit with my back to the fireplace, listening to the others call out. All of a sudden I felt sick and had to get out of my chair quick and move. I took some photos of Julie, Sarah and Marie by the big fireplace got a few orbs on them. Alison found some connection to religion or chapel to do with fireplace and a nasty man of the cloth. We put our cameras on the table turned on and ask the spirits to turn them off. Some went off, and the others said mine took photo by itself but I can't find the picture now.

Vigil 3

We all went together into the library and sat down round the large table, Alison did not like sitting with her back to the fireplace so swapped places with Matt. Matt said he felt religious, as if he was being told off. Sarah, opposite did not feel very well and felt the presence of a lady. Her face seemed to change and she looked like someone else for a short while. I kept thinking about the wooden panel behind me and was later told it led into the chimneys somehow.

Vigil 4

We could go where we liked, so Alison and I and a few others went to sit on the main staircase with the big window. It was very wet outside with rain beating down on windows, and windy. As I sat on the window sill I looked up the stairs I thought I saw someone walk out of the wall to the right side at top of stairs. A lady with a big flowing gown in a light colour like they wore in the Tudor times. Alison said she had also seen the same lady. We found out later it could have been Elizabeth Seymour. I took more photos and got more orbs in different places in the hall. Had quick look in the men's loo and was told it used to be a lady's dressing room.

Very nice house would like to go back one day...
Thank you ... Maureen and Amanda.

Matt Hasler

From the point I arrived at Marwell I couldn’t stop looking at the windows. I felt like I was being watched everywhere I went. I went on the whistle stop tour being led by Maureen and got a brief idea where I was going around the building which was great except when everyone went back downstairs and I went to go to the toilet there was a bang on the door from the inside (with no one inside) and the door for the visitors office, opened which was Yale locked!

From this point my night involved a conversation on the stairs, twice, with a liar who after about two hours finally told the truth and a strange feeling of someone nasty standing behind me in the library room! In the Library Sarah had issues with me as there was a spirit with her that didn’t like me and Julie said for the possibly first time ever she saw a light above my head just moving up and down!

I loved this short night it was so worthwhile! The one downside for me was that due to a change in policy at the venue we could not go into the attic! I would love to go back again and would recommend this venue to everyone and anyone!
