Introduction

The mix of London & Essex and Dorset & Hampshire members looked forward to the investigation of this location from the day the owner Mike Parrish agreed to let us hold an investigation. It was a investigation location like no other!
Hidden in a wood off the A128 Ongar - Brentwood Road, is a small bungalow that hides a big secret. Behind it lies a three floored bunker complex in which 600 people would have been confined behind blast proof doors in the event of a nuclear war.
The deep bunker was built in 1952/3 as part of Rotor, an urgent government building programme to improve Britain's air defence network. The bunker was the Sector Operations Command for the RAF Fighter Command. Known as SOC - R4, it was to provide command and control of the London Sector of Fighter Command.

The bunker is 125 feet underground and the entrance is through an ordinary looking bungalow amongst some trees. Once into the bungalow, it leads to a 100-yard tunnel before you are in the bunker itself. Above you are two more floors, the 'hill' which covers it, and a radio mast, one of two, which would have been vital for communications.

The reason for the bunker was to take on a far more potentially catastrophic aim in the 1960s. Because of the threat of nuclear war the bunker became the regional government bunker for London. The aim of the bunker was that it was to be one of the government administration centres communicating with the many other smaller bunkers situated throughout the country, organising the country after a nuclear attack.

Substantial improvements were made to the bunker to create an environment for 600 people to survive, work and be self-sufficient for up to three months in the event of a nuclear war. The bunker had air-conditioning, heating, cooling, its own water supply and generators, and even its own operating theatre.

There was a BBC studio which would have broadcast to the population (if there was any left) and the rest of the world.
The bunker was maintained at great expense during the 70, 80s and early 90s, until it was sold by the government back to the farming family who had originally lost it to the government in 1950s.
It is now open to the public and the entrance is 1/2 mile to the north of St. Nicholas' Church, Kelvedon Hatch on the A128 towards Ongar.

Even though the bunker was never used for its main purpose imagine the hundreds of re-enactments that would have taken place over the years. Drills for if the worst did happen!

The Bunker

Even though the bunker was never used for its main purpose imagine the hundreds of re-enactments that would have taken place over the years. Drills for if the worst did happen!

Ghost Sightings and alleged Hauntings

  • Light anomalies
  • Miserable atmospheres in certain parts of the bunker
  • Strange presence's that although are not seen as full apparitions do appear as mists and flashing lights.
  • The spirit of a workman seen on the site - reported to have been killed during the building of the bunker when he fell into a vast lake of concrete
  • Strange smells of which sources can not be located

A member of the public approached the owners one Christmas and paid to spend 3 weeks on his own (over Christmas!) in the bunker. His experiences there were so strange that the man only lasted 3 days!

Baseline Readings

As this site was huge and had many separate rooms and areas spread over the 3 floors teams were asked to take temp and emf readings when they entered each new area. Team has noted that if we return, a couple of hours should be set aside, prior to the start of the investigation to complete baselines satisfactorily.

Team / Vigil Notes

Team 1 - Julie, Lee, Alison, Selina & Sandy

Vigil 1 & 2 - The Entrance Corridor

Ambient temp 9.5
No EMF (apart from near cables on side of wall - expected)
Other conditions - non-stop weather reporting radio switched on
Team heads straight for the far end of the corridor nearest the bungalow entrance
Selina catches a light anomaly on camcorder
Temp around where the team is in this area is 9, no EMF
Camcorder keeps going in and out of focus
Selina is facing the door to the bungalow and feels as though there is something to her right between her and the wall
Alison walks down towards the weather reporting end of the corridor and gets a EMF reading of 2.5 in the middle of the corridor. When she moves it up and down and side to side the reading drops but returns to 2.5 at a static point in the air.
Sandy takes his camcorder and follows Alison down into the corridor
Lee, Julie and Selina remain by the door to the bungalow
Lee gets really bad goosebumps and feels we are not on our own
Lee feels there is a woman in uniform, in his face shouting at him to get out, he feels that we are not wanted here and are being told off
Julie, Lee and Selina all comment on how cold they have got and temp now reads a 3.5 degree drop to 6 (it is so cold Julie and Lee can see their breath in the torchlight)
Sandy and Alison are still down the corridor and hear something drop behind them. On investigation they find a small black stone. The walls are all white and the ceiling is not made up of stones like the one they heard fall. No explanation as to where the stone came from is found.
Julie, Selina and Lee continue to call out and team record a further drop in temp to 5
Sandy and Alison return and Julie, Lee and Selina walk down the corridor
Alison calls out, temp in area now 6
Julie, Lee and Selina hear / see something fly past them and drop. Small stone found similar to the one Alison had found. Again no explanation found.
Alison and Sandy continue to call out and Alison gets the name George Harwell and a sense of sadness
Sandy can see someone (younger male) dragging himself up the corridor. He has lost his legs and is using his arms to pull himself along
Julie, Lee and Selina can see a bright light moving at the end of the corridor and then a series of 3 flashes on the wall ahead of them
Julie, Lee and Selina rejoin Alison and Sandy
Selina gets the name Arnie
Team decides to all wander together down to the middle of the corridor
Calling out - 2 very clear knocks heard on the notice board (literally knock knock)
Lee gets the shivers and feels like someone has walked through him
Sandy gets the shivers all over (and is stood next to Lee)
Alison feels giddy like she is slightly drunk
All team feel very uneasy and trapped like they can not escape
Julie and Alison gets noticeably angry and Julie calls out loudly "We are NOT leaving!!" and Lee's immediate reaction is to say "Don't say that"
Selina gets the words "No Piss off"
And Alison gets the words "If you were walking in my shoes you would f***ing understand"
Sandy sees something move right in front of him
Julie and Alison are still very angry
Alison calls out and Julie gets the words "F***king women!"
Lee calls out and feels a tight feeling around his head
Alison can see torch light in the corridor but no one has their torch on
Julie does not feel angry now but Sandy is now very agitated and is clenching his fists, staring straight ahead
All team are stood close together and all feel a strong moving breeze among them
We all decide to leave area as it is coming to the end of the vigil but as we are leaving Lee turns around and sees a figure in the corridor behind them which spurs the team to re enter the area
Lee gets very emotional and wells up. He feels sad and feels like there is someone stood with us watching someone else leave up the corridor that they know they will never see again
Lee feels a male presence does not like Lee and the rest of the team knowing he is sad and is trying to mask it with anger.

Vigil 3 & 4 - Top Floor

Team head straight for the area with the mock up of a operating room
Temp 16, No EMF fluctuations
Lee feels like the team are being watched
Julie feels as if she is about to witness something or be shown something that she does not really want to see but does not feel it is connected to anything medical
Alison decides to go and sit in the adjoining toilet/wash room, while in there she can taste anaesthetic
Julie and Selina feel uneasy
Selina moves off of the bed to sit on a chair and immediately feels better. Julie feels relieved that Selina has moved off of the bed
Temp 15.5
Julie, Selina and Lee hear the sound of choking coming from the room Alison is in but she did not hear it
Team call out and a metallic click is heard from the dorm area
Selina feels someone is in the doorway to the dorm area
Lee sees a flash of light against the side wall
Julie can imagine someone running over to Lee and dressing him for surgery and getting him to scrub up so he could help. She imagines him being told "You'll do, You can help!"
Alison feels someone stroke her leg but she is still in the room on her own
Sandy very quiet in this area
Alison catches a light anomaly on camcorder and team hears a loud click shortly afterwards
Julie and Alison feel this area was used for research / testing humans and developing things for war.
Julie strongly believes that the mock up here is not realistic and the items here do not belong in this particular area
Lee thought he saw a figure walking behind the dummies at the operating table
Team decide to try a glass divination on the older operating table but as Julie goes to get up her whole right leg feels like it is missing and is totally dead. After a couple of minutes it returns to normal with no pins and needles - ironically team point out to Julie that the dummy on the mock up operating theatre is missing a leg!
Team set up glass divination. Glass does not move but after a while team notice Alison has gone very quiet and is just staring at the glass whilst grinning inanely.
Julie moves the glass and Alison is intent on following it with her finger even though the rest of the team have removed their fingers. Julie moves it 3 or 4 times and Alison just stares at it grinning following it with her finger. When asked what she was doing Alison replies "following orders" in a slurred voice. Julie clicks her fingers around Alison but she does not flinch. Eventually Julie takes the glass away and hides it from her view but she continues to stare at where it was. Eventually Alison snaps out of it and we go with her into the next room where she reports feeling like she was just going under or coming out of anaesthetic.
Team moves to audio area of the dorm and decides to try another glass divination experiment round a table.
As team are setting up Julie can smell strong odour of sick
Alison calls out and taps are heard coming from the table
Sandy calls out and a booming sound is heard by the lockers behind us
Julie calls out and Alison hears a shuffling sound
Glass moves very slowly away from Lee
The glass then moves back towards Lee
Lees torch dies
Julie asks for the glass to move to one of the men but Lee does not think that they have the strength
Team take turns calling out but Julie then notices Lee is very quiet. He appears to, like Alison have drifted away and is not reacting to the group calling his name or trying to get his attention. Julie tries the click test again and Lee has no reaction even when Julie clicks right close to his eyes
Alison takes the glass away and Lee slowly comes back round
He felt mesmerised by the glass and felt it was blue or had some connection to blue
While describing his experience he keeps repeating the word blue in every sentence
Session ended

Vigil 5 & 6 - Middle Floor

Team starts their vigil in the main communications room
Temp 19 fluctuating to 19.5, No EMF fluctuations
Selina starts calling out and team hear a lot of noise from outside of the vigil area which the team take to be other people making their way to their vigils
Team continues to call out and hear 2 small knocks in the room and at the same time 2 light anomalies are caught on camcorder
Alison develops a headache
Battery on the camcorder drains even though it was a freshly charged battery at the beginning of the vigil
Julie feels like she should sit up to one particular desk and start working
Team hear lots of continuous noise from above, sounds like team upstairs are moving furniture around, dragging items across the floor
1 knock heard from the corner of the room
Team move to centre area by the gas mask dummies
Temp in this area 17, No EMF fluctuations
Julie feels like there should be a woman sat at one of the empty desks. She has long straight dark hair, pulled back in to a ponytail. She is very tall and slender and has a very pale complexion.
Alison is sure she saw someone walk behind the team
Lee puts the glass he is carrying over 3 holes on the desk
Alison and Julie call out
After 5 minutes Lee turns the torch back on and notices the glass has moved right off of the 3 holes on the desk. All team were present and could confirm no one moved it or heard anyone moving it. Lee works out it has moved about 10 cm
No EMF fluctuations around area
Temp has dropped to 16 and Lee thinks he sees a small light by the social security sign

Team move into conference room 208
As soon as Julie and Selina walk in they smell a strong BO smell
Team attempt a glass divination
Julie feels like the table is moving slightly but as soon as she notices it, it stops

Julie and Alison both sense a man in the doorway looking into the room
Selina gets the words "I'm a sergeant if you don't mind"
Julie gets the words "come on girls breaks over" and smells a strong smell of tobacco
All team hear footsteps in the room
Glass starts to move
Alison hears a snapping noise in the corner
Lee and Julie express the desire to pick the glass up and throw it at the wall

Vigil 1 & 2 - Middle floor

9:25 - Alan picks up a name of Emily, there are lots of noises coming from above as if furniture is being moved around and people talking and giggling. This goes on for about 30 minutes. We initially thought it was another team, but when questioned no-one was above us at the time.

Steve then starts to ask questions. From this experiment Steve concluded that there was a Scottish man with us, who died in the building. He died from a serious cough and chest problems. A name was produced of: William Xavier McArthur.
11:50 - very loud coughing came from the strong room again with a faint hint of music. We called out to ask if anyone was in the room, knocked on the door, but there was no reply. Then the coughing started again.

00:20 - we all see a flash of light in the corner of the main room. And we all hear the coughing again. At this point we went to see if there was another way into the strong room, but could not find any other entrance. Even though we didn't get any answer from this room, we all felt that there was someone in there coughing loudly.

Vigil 5 & 6 - Entrance Corridor

01:10 - We all move up to the end where the cottage was and sat quietly for about 20 minutes. Whilst in the circle, Alan becomes unwell and had to leave the circle. He began to shake and felt very nauseous.

01:40 - Alan throws a 10p piece into the darkness of the tunnel and asks if it could be thrown back. After 15 minutes, nothing happened so we started to look for the coin. It couldn't be found. We then joined the girls again at the top of the tunnel.
02:15 - we all decide to make our way out of the tunnel. We all had our torches on looking for the coin, as we almost got to the end of the tunnel, we all heard the coin thrown from behind us. When a light was shone, the coin was still spinning and besides this coin was another coin. One was on heads and one was on tails. I checked the temperature of both coins and one was warmer by 4 degrees than the other, this is the one, which was still spinning.

I was really excited about this investigation. I know you can visit Kelvedon hatch in the daytime but how many people are lucky enough to get to wander around it at night. We arrived and had a tour with Mike the owner before starting our vigils. It was creepy being in there in the first place and that was with lights on. My mind did start to race a bit at the thought of going it alone without Mike to guide us and with just our torches and no main source of light, so I had to calm my self down a bit before we started.

Team one which consisted of Lee, Sandy, Selina, Alison and I started our night off with a hour and a half vigil in the entrance corridor. This whole place was very deceiving and disorientating as I thought the entrance corridor would have been on the top level when in fact it was off of the bottom floor over a 100ft underground however it gently sloped up to what I think was a ground level entrance. I know it has a lot to do with the differing levels and depths of land around the bunker but never the less it was very confusing for someone that analyses things like I do. The one thing that sticks in my mind about the start of this vigil was the constant cold breezes and the rapid temperature drop even with 5 lots of body heat in the area. It did not seem to make any sense. Selina, Lee and I walked along the corridor and a small dark stone flew behind us and fell to the floor. We retrieved the stone and it was not like any of the stones in the area. For a start no stones were loose on the walls, ceiling or floor and besides that's it was totally the wrong colour. In this area Alison and I also became very angry and at one point when I shouted out we were not going to leave there was a very odd noise and I can remember Lee asking me not to say that again. This was while we were stood in the middle of the corridor and we really felt like we were being trapped and that there were people in front and behind us. Sandy also started to get angry and I could see him clenching his fists. Selina was catching quite a few light anomalies on camcorder and a lot of activity (ie light anomalies, strange emf readings and temp fluctuations) seemed to be centred around Lee in the middle of the group. While all standing together in this area we also heard a loud growl. We could not understand where it came from as it sounded among us and all I could think of was a large German Shepherd with its handler trying to drive us out. I did not feel like the dog was a pet. We also called out and got 2 very clear audible knocks on the notice board. We were a little on edge as on the wall in the tunnel someone had written in UV pen beware of the ghost in huge letters, that could only be seen when all the lights were off. Not something you want to see when you have just been growled at.

Our next vigil was on the top floor and we started off in the mock up infirmary area. I felt very uneasy that Selina was sat on one of the beds. It was not that she should not have been there, it just made me worried. I felt a lot better when she said she felt uneasy and moved to a chair. This area was odd. I felt like we were waiting to watch something. We also discussed among us the possibility of this area being used to run tests on people and/or animals.

After a while I had the oddest image of a man rushing up to Lee and trying to dress him and get him to scrub up, almost like he was saying you'll do, you can help. It was at this point that my right leg just seemed to disappear. I had no prior warning of it going numb it was just like I never had a leg. I could not even feel myself thumping it to try and revive it. I joked saying it felt like it had been removed. After a couple of minutes the feeling came straight back. No pins and needles or cramp, nothing, just straight back to feeling normal. I thought this was very odd. It creeped me out a little bit when Lee and Sandy pointed out the dummy on the mock up operating theatre was also missing a leg! We decided to try a glass divination on the second empty operating table. The glass did not respond at all but we did notice Alison had gone a little quiet and was just staring at the glass with an inane smile on her face. We moved the glass back and forth and each time she followed it with her finger keeping the same expression. We removed the glass but her finger remained there as if the glass was still there and various attempts at clicking my fingers in front of her failed to snap her out of it. When asked what she was doing she just replied "following orders". We took her into the next room where she seemed normal again. We tried another glass divination in this room and this time Lee seemed to drift off. He was again staring intently at the glass and we could not get him to acknowledge us. His finger also followed the glass and eventually, after more attempts of clicking very close to his face and ears failed to work, Alison took the glass away. All Lee could say when he came round was about how blue the glass appeared.

Our third vigil was on the middle floor. This floor made me nervous but only because of all the dummies in gas masks and full fall out kit. I have never liked this even when studying history at school and Uni. It made human beings look so, well inhuman! It was of course made worse recently when doctor who/BBC ran an episode with people walking around like Zombies, wearing gas masks! We started our vigil in the main communications room. All seemed quiet in there so we moved onto a smaller room off of the area. As soon as Selina and I walked in we looked at eachother because we could smell really strong BO. We knew it was not one of the team so where did this come from. We all settled round a table and tried the glass again. It seemed to move slightly but only creaking and crunchy. Sandy who was filming sat back with his eyes shut and after I while I noticed he appeared to be asleep. I asked him if he was ok and he answered immediately (proving he was not asleep) but his answer was just "mmmmmh" every time I asked him. Alison also tried and got the same reaction. Alison could also sense someone stood in the doorway looking in on us and as she said that I got the phrase " come on girls tea break is over". I did not feel nervous in this room until I could see in my mind the figure of a man stood right behind Lee. Lee's chair then appeared to wobble as if someone was trying to move him. I really did get the feeling that this was a break room and should be filled with the smell of coffee and cigarette / cigar smoke. For no apparent reason then, I felt like picking up the glass and throwing against the wall. I was surprised when Lee said he also wanted to do this as I had not voiced how I felt about the glass. Sandy did not seem to be coming round so we moved on to the next area which was a large room with a post room attached. It looked like a operations room where things would have been planned but I agreed with Lee it was very school / training like and to be honest we did act a bit idiotic in this room but only on one side. We giggled and joked our way through what was left of the vigil. Sorry Sandy as you seemed to be the only serious one (note - sat on the other side of the room) and were the brunt of most of our jokes. It is important to note that as soon as we left this room we all returned to normal. I noticed this as we headed back to the team room.

Our last vigil was on the bottom floor. We all sat in the room with the large tv and wall map. Lee was very frightened by this room and I have to say I did not like it much. It felt like I was waiting for something "big" to happen. Like I was going to get "the call". When the lights were off I sat with my eyes shut, as I really did not want to see anything. I was not even that happy about having them open when the lights were on. I felt that someone was around us that had died while the bunker was being built and when I voiced this to the rest of the group 2 loud taps were heard from within the room. We decided to move onto the radio room. We all seemed to feel ok in this room until about 5 minutes from the end of the vigil then I noticed Selina did not look too happy and I felt like there was someone at the door looking in on us again. With nothing else to report we headed back to the team room to pack up.

Our night at Kelvedon Hatch is one I will never forget. I have kept the stone that was thrown at us as a little memento of our visit and I hope to be able to return to the location in the future to see if we can get any more phenomena like that.
Thank you to Mike Parrish for allowing our visit, we hope we will be able to return soon!

I was feeling very excited in the lead-up to this investigation, full of anticipation at the thought of being locked deep underground with no escape! Although, I was a little confused as the why a building like this, which had never really fulfilled its purpose as a nuclear fallout shelter, would be haunted. My team (leader Maria, Ken, Mark, Maureen and Denise) experienced very little activity on the night, and I have to admit I was left a little disappointed.

We began our investigation on the upper level, which comprised male and female dormitories and a medical suite. We didn't experience any activity here, although both Ken and Maria felt that there was a male presence around. In the room which is set up as an operating theatre Ken, Maria and Mark all picked up on a Russian scientist, who had defected. They all felt that he had worked in this space, but that it hadn't actually been an operating room and was a research facility instead. They felt that he had been involved in human experimentation, possible on people with mental illness.

The second vigil took place on the middle level, which made up the main work area of the bunker. We began, in one of the small side rooms, with glass divination and table tipping. Our attempts at calling out didn't bring any response through the glass or table. However, I was very cold in the room and was constantly shivering, despite the rest of the group feeling warm. At the same time, Mark (who was sitting next to me) kept having the back of his head touched, causing his hair to stand on end. We moved out into the main space, which was made up of two large connected rooms. Again, there was no response to our calling out, and although Ken and Maria felt that someone was with us, everything remained quiet. I did, however, catch a number of orbs on my camera.

Our next vigil took place on the lower lever. We began in the Filter Room. We didn't experience any activity here, although Ken thought he saw a light behind me at one point. Ken and Maria agreed that there was a strong feeling of misery in this area. We all moved into the plant room, and it is here that we experienced the most activity of the night. We had to walk through this room on the way to the filter room, and had stopped briefly to take pictures -and at that point we all felt fine. When we came back into the room, we still felt ok, but within a matter of minutes we were all experiencing a variety of emotions. I quickly became very uneasy in this space, and wanted the lights put on and for us to leave. The only way I could feel safe was to wedge myself between Maureen and Denise, with my back tight against the machinery. Maureen was feeling very sick and was hunched over. Mark and Denise were also on edge. Ken thought he saw a static light on a wall, and when he turned his torch on he couldn't explain what he had seen. Then the banging started. They were dull thuds, as if coming from somewhere hollow, and were single, double and triple taps. They seemed to be responding to our voices, but not in any coherent way. We then moved onto a small side room near the entrance, which Ken felt had been a first aid room, but had never been used. Rather, it had been used to store barrels of beer. I was sitting against a wall opposite Maria and kept seeing flashes of light dancing above her head. It was almost as if a disco ball was hanging from the ceiling. In one corner of the room was a television, which wasn't turned on at the wall. Ken suddenly shouted, "did you see that", to which myself, Maureen, Maria and Denise all replied "yes". We had all been looking at the television at the same time and had all seen a flash of light fly past it. However, Maria, Ken, Maureen and Denise had all seen the light to the right of the television, and I had seen it above the television.

Our final vigil took place in the entrance tunnel. Unfortunately, there was a digital recording on world weather conditions playing on a loop in this area, which couldn't be turned off. This was very distracting for the group, and made it very hard to recognise any phenomena taking place. Ken felt that the spot where the tunnel linked with the main building had the most energy, and both he and Maria continued to sense a feeling of misery. Maria tried throwing a ten pence piece down the tunnel to see if it returned (another group had success with the same experiment) but nothing happened. We all agreed that the atmosphere in this area was dead, and we ended our investigation of the bunker here.

Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker was a very interesting site, but in the end failed to deliver for my team.

Sandy Rutter

Kelvedon Hatch is a secret nuclear bunker, which was built in 1952 by the Air Ministry. It was a very clean site considering it was built on farmland. We had the usual tour of the place by the owner, Mike. He took us round the whole place. It was nice but smelt very clinical.

Vigil 1
Team 1 Julie Alison Lee Selina Sandy

We were down the long entrance corridor that is approximately 120 yards long. We started at the top and we took a few pictures before settling in. We called out nothing happened and we called out again and Alison heard something down the corridor and started walking down. Julie asked if I could follow Alison down as I had my camcorder on me so I did and we went right down to the bottom. When we heard the radio that was going on all the time as it was a constant weather report we started back up the tunnel and stopped halfway. We turned the torch off and looked at the wall. On the left it was white and someone had written in UV pen BEWARE OF THE GHOST. Alison and I said it was horrible then we went straight back up to were the others where. Julie, Lee and Selina then went down whilst Alison and me stayed at the top. I could see a man with no legs struggling to get anywhere. I dont know if it was my imagination but it was so real I thought I was picking this up as I thought it was really sad to see this poor man with no legs. The other half of the team was where me and Alison were and so we asked them to look at the right hand wall and they were as horrified as we were. Alison came up with the name George and Selina came up with the name Arnie. I also got very angry in this area when the team felt they were being penned in.

Vigil 2

We were on the top floor where the beds and hospital bit was. We took a few pictures and Alison went into the little adjacent room off of the surgery room. It smelt of anaesthetic. I went in to the room with the beds in and then we all gathered together and tried glass divination to know avail. Alison was acting as if she was drunk. She seemed to be in a trance as Julie asked if she was ok she said that she was fine but we clearly new she wasn't. Julie asked again and again she said she was fine and then Julie clicked her fingers and Alison didn't even respond to the clicks. Then Julie moved the glass from side to side by picking it up and placing it down again and Alison was following it with her finger. Julie asked what was she doing she said she was following orders, whose orders I dont know as Julie never gave any orders. Then we went into the other room and she came out of the trance she was in. We found a table and tried glass divination again we called out and nothing happened again. Then Lee went into a trance and again Julie started clicking her fingers in front of Lee and he wasn't responding to the clicks either it was very strange that it seemed to affect them both in the same way.

Vigil 3

We were in the big communications room on the middle floor for this vigil. Again we took a few pictures and we called out and nothing happened. We all went into the small room off of it and we tried glass divination. It was moving ever so slightly. My eyes was shut all the time we was in there and Julie asked if I was alright I said Mmmm then 5 minutes past Julie asked me the same question I said Mmmm. Again Julie asked the same question I said Mmmm and the Julie asked if that is all I could say and I said yes I'm alright. Again 5 minutes went past and I could here Alison saying are you all right Sandy. I said yes I'm fine but to tell you the truth I felt sick and I had a thumping headache. It was horrible in that room I wanted to get out but I didn't say anything, as I didn't want to spoil it for the rest of the team. Alison saw a figure at the door and Lee & Julie said they wanted to pick up the glass and throw it at the wall. Julie could also sense a man stood behind Lee and Lee felt his chair wobble.

Vigil 4

We where in the small radio/map room on the bottom floor. Nothing much happened in here it was pretty flat compared to other rooms. Lee felt very uneasy when the torch was turned off and said he felt anxious. there was nothing much to report in here though.
All in All it was a very interesting site because of what it was. I would go back again just to see if something was missing.

Steve Crouch

Before attending this investigation I did not think that there would be a lot of activity at this site, but I was interested in the place and as such attended through historical interest and not potential paranormal activity. I am pleased to say that the venue was great on both fronts. It is a very strange place as it was built to survive in a worst case scenario and I am unsure of the history of the venue as I do not research a place before attending.

I was in Team 4 which was lead superbly by Alan and was really good fun to be in as we all enjoyed the site, and was humorous even whilst the strangest things were going on.

After a quick tour we went off and started on the middle floor. Immediately as you got through the door you come across a narrow corridor with three rooms in which then leads to a big open plan space with rooms off it. We went and sat in one of the small rooms, the first one we came to 'Commissioner's Room'. Whilst in this space we could hear a lot of noises around the space that seemed to be coming from the big open plan office, including a dragging sound and there were spirit lights around as well.

We decided to then go to the open plan office and were not disappointed in the change. It sounded like the group that were above us on the top floor were moving beds and furniture around and the dragging of a bag sound was also heard. We were surprised at how well the sound travelled and moved further around the big open plan space. I stood next to some cupboards behind one of the dummies as I felt that this was a cold spot and felt the energy of a women but could not get much from her. She was wearing grey clothing but I found it hard to put her in a specific period. I do not think that she was from the period depicted in the scene in the room. Alan had said that he was given the name Emily, but I did not get a name.

We then went around the corner in the big space and this did not feel as active as the main office area. Throughout this we could still hear what sounded like furniture being moved and also we could hear what sounded like a public information film playing even though this was not the case. The film sound had screams and all different sound effects, but we could not identify where this was coming from.

We then split in to two groups and I stayed in the big space. One of the reasons for doing this was because we wanted to see how well the sound travelled through the space. Alan counted out to five in one of the small rooms and I repeated the numbers I heard back.

Whilst standing around the corner I saw a full body apparition of an air force man. I know that he was air force he was standing in the space between the open plan office and the bit around the corner. He stood there jauntily with his arms crossed. I got the initials T and H and said that his name was Thomas and could not clearly get his surname. We then rejoined and went in to different rooms again.

The next space was downstairs and we went in the space where the radio station is. When we went around this we ended in the operations room, where the glass is and we clearly heard someone coughing on a number of occasions, and this came from either in the locked room or by the locked room.

During some glass divination we got that a person serving in the British Forces. His name was William Xavier (pron. Hay-vee-er) McArthur. He was Scottish and died in the room we were in on the same date as we were investigating. He was caught in a fire but died of a heart attack and he said that it was him that was coughing.

The coughing was so clear that at first we dismissed it as someone in the room that was locked but we knocked and asked if there was anyone in the room but got no response. This was very good.

Our next vigil took us to the long entrance corridor. There was nothing going on here. I got the sense of the hustle and bustle but really not much else. The girls stayed at the top of the tunnel by the entrance and we went to the bottom. This made no difference we still got nothing. Alan then threw a 10p (current currency) up the tunnel, not far and asked if it could be thrown back. Nothing happened. We then went back to meet with the girls again looking for the 10p on route but could not find the coin. We then sat in a circle and tried to link in but got no responses to the request for knocking etc. As I gazed down the tunnel I could see a green light that went up high on the wall and then down lower on the floor and moved away from the main entrance.

We then all decided to go back as it was cold by the entrance, the coldest part of the bunker. As we walked back out of the tunnel we were all looking for Alan's 10p all six of us with torches. None of us could find the 10p. Then just as we were nearing the end of the tunnel a coin was heard to hit the floor. The coin landed behind everyone making it almost impossible for someone to throw. The coin landed behind Alan and was still spinning with movement when I saw it. The coin was a degree or so hotter in temperature than the floor, which in the 25 minutes after Alan had thrown it would have surprised me. Then about half a meter away form this coin another coin was spotted. These coins were in the middle of the width of the tunnel and really would have been very hard to miss by everyone. So not only did Alan get his coin back but we also got another coin returned to us. Maybe it took so long to reply as the energy went off to find another 10p. This was an amazing demonstration of an apport and was very evidential to all that were present. We decided to throw the coin again. We did this about five times and every time we found the coin in the tunnel again further supporting the evidence that we would not have missed the coin(s) on the floor whilst walking up and down the tunnel.

After a break we then did the top floor but to did not pick up anything. I think this was due to us all being very tired. Any sort of apport drains energies and mine had waned after that.

So in conclusion it was a very interesting night and some amazing evidence was demonstrated to our team. I would like to go back but reverse the order of levels so that I did the top level whilst feeling fresh.

This really was an amazing night and I would like to thank Kerry for securing the location and Julie for running the night.

Selina Dean

Alan and I arrived at Kelvedon Hatch aprox 8:30pm. We made our way through the tunnel into the canteen where we met up with the rest of the team.

Once everyone had arrived we had a tour of the location which was very spooky even with everyone present and the lights on! As everyone made there way back we split off into our separate groups.

I was in team one with Julie, Alison, Lee and Sandy. We started our investigation on the lower level tunnel. It was hard to imagine we were 100 ft underground. Once the lights were turned out we started to call out. We caught a few orbs on the camcorder at this point. We then decided to split ourselves into two groups, myself, Julie and Lee at one end of the tunnel and Sandy and Alison at the other. We all felt there was defiantly a presence in the tunnel with us. Sandy and Alison had stones thrown at them, as did we when we swapped ends of the tunnel. We got the impression someone really didn't want us there!

Our next vigil was the top floor dormitories and medical room. These rooms really made us feel uneasy due to the dummies dressed in uniform. During our time in the medical room we decided to try glass divination. This proved to be very interesting as Alison started acting as though she was coming round from an anaesthetic and didn't really seem to know what was happening around her. When we tried it for a second time in another room the same thing happened to Lee.

We spent our third vigil on the middle floor in the communication area. This was also quite a spooky place due to all the dummies sat at the desks. While in this room we heard lots of voices and sounds of furniture being moved around for about ten minutes, we dismissed this as being another group but it turned out there had been no one above us! We moved into one of the smaller rooms where both Julie and myself got a very strong smell of B.O. We all felt there was a scruffy man standing in the doorway watching us.

For the last part on the night we made our way to the ground floor rooms. We got the impression there was someone around who had been killed whilst building the bunker. Unfortunately this was all we found on this level.

Overall this was a fantastic place for an investigation where everyone experienced something during the night. I would like to return for a second investigation at a later date.

Alan Hall

Selina and I arrived at around 8:30pm, and we both had a weird feeling about this place. After joining up with the rest of the team and having a walk round, we all split into our groups. My team was Steve Gary Laura Louise Clare and myself.

Upon entering the first vigil a strong smell of rubber was smelled by all, and we all had the feeling we were being watched by a lady figure. There was a definite cold spot in one part of the large room where I felt a woman was present. To me this was definitely the most active room of the whole place and I felt quite uneasy. The noises coming from above were incredible, especially when we found out there was no one above us at all. It was as if the whole of the furniture in the room was being dragged about and laughing was also present.

Many experiments were done by the team throughout the night and we got very positive responses, especially from the glass divination. Steve picked up quite a lot of information about one person and I had a strange feeling all night that I was having a heart attack. Whilst on the bottom floor, the coughing was quite disturbing. It was either a spirit present with us, or someone was playing a joke on us as it was the most distinctive noise I have ever heard. It was so loud.

Whilst in the corridor, although not much happened, I did an experiment with a coin. I threw it into the dark and asked for it to be thrown back. We did not get a response so went looking for the coin. It wasn't anywhere to be found. Upon leaving the corridor, all team members were trying to find the coin, which I threw earlier, when suddenly from behind us, all of the team heard the coin being thrown. We all shone our torches and saw the coin still spinning, but ever more unbelievable was another coin by the side of it. One was showing heads the other was showing tails. There was also a 4-degree temp difference between the 2 coins. This has to be the most intriguing thing I have ever witnessed and all of the other team members agree with that.

As the night went on, we all began to feel that the spirits were leaving us, and shortly after this nothing else happened. All in all, it was a superb location and loads of unexplained things happened to me and the team. I can quite honestly say that this was the most activity I have witnessed anywhere. I would love to return at some point and try different experiments.

Wayne Blyth

Wow, what a location!
After arriving extremely early, we waited for the rest of the team to arrive. After a while we were all there.
We were greeted by Mike, the owner, who proceeded to give us the tour. Walking round this now defunct facility, It gave an amazing insight into the sense of paranoia that must have existed during its use.

Our first vigil was down on the fourth floor, with all the air filters and other machinery. This is a very deceiving building, in that there are sounds which echo throughout and you never know where they come from. We experienced several cold spots and a few odd knocks and bangs, but, due to other teams being in close proximity, I would not put these down to being paranormal. However, when we plunged ourselves in to complete darkness, I thought that Steen was standing right beside me, "invading my personal space" so to speak. On flicking on a torch, he was actually several feet away from me!!!!

We moved into the machinery room, and here we were to hear noises which appeared to be coming from the corridor. It sounded as though someone were walking through the door and down the access ramp. We managed to replicate the sounds and can confirm that no one else was in the area at that time. Val and Di both came up with names, and I myself came up with the name Harris. However, we await confirmation.

Vigil 2 was quite interesting. We made our way to the entrance tunnel, and set about our tasks. Myself and Val attempted the Ouija board, but with no discernible results gained. However, while we were doing this, Di was sat motionless on one of the bunks. When Val asked a particular question Di says that the bunk moved. A while later, we were all stood at the end of the corridor, (near the radio equipment) when I decided to walk to the other end by myself, as we were sure we could hear vices coming from there. On doing so, I discovered that the "voices" were actually an echo from both our team and the recording of the woman's voice that was constantly on.

While walking back I got the sense that someone was actually following me back. At this time, Steen took a picture, and lo and behold, a huge "orb" appears on my back.

Next was the top floor. Unfortunately, due to experiencing moderate pain from my kidney problem, I was unable to participate in this vigil, except to have a brief vigil in the dormitories. I can't report anything happening in this area.

I did manage to join in for our last vigil, and I was glad I did, for while we were in one of the video viewing rooms, we were all aware of noises coming from what sounded like immediately above us. We all thought this strange, as we knew the other teams would make no such noises. We could even hear what sounded like furniture being moved. (at the end of the evening we asked the other teams if they had been making the noises, and all concerned said no).

At one point, we were all sitting in another room when we all heard someone come in through the doors and walk towards us. However on investigation, no one was there. I could also see through the gap in the curtains, what I assumed to be one of the dummies that stood in the area, appeared to be moving, bobbing up and down.

I immediately grabbed a torch and sprinted from the room to have a look. Nothing moved. Bizarrely, not one of the dummies were actually standing, they were all seated!! I could see nothing that could be the cause

Conclusion:
I had my reservations, as I don't think this is the type of place that would be "haunted". I certainly don't know of any deaths associated with Kelvedon Hatch.
On reflection, however, too many inexplicable things occurred. Return visit a must! Thanks to Mike for opening up this wonderful place to indulge our curiosities.

Mark Lines

This was my first visit to the Nuclear Bunker and was quite excited with the fact that we as a group were going to perform an investigation there.
I remember vividly the events in the early eighties just how close we were to Nuclear War and to be honest it frightened the life out of me. Therefore there was an anticipation and slight fear leading up to the investigation.

Vigil 1 (Top Floor)
I was in Team 2 along with Maria, Ken, Maureen, Leeanne and Denise, in which our first vigil was up on the top floor. This included the Male Dorms and the Sick Bay areas. As soon as we started I got the overwhelming feeling that I just wanted to go home, not because of the investigation, but it was the feelings that came over me.

Whether these Dorms were actually occupied for real was debatable, but I certainly picked those feelings up. After about 15-20mins the feelings lifted and I felt more comfortable. We heard a few taps and a few creaks coming from the bunks but that was about it. We called out numerous times, but if there was any activity, the activity consisted of feeling very warm and finding it a bit difficult to breathe.

Later we moved to the Sick Bay area, Ken was convinced someone was with us, but the communication was very limited and sparse. We sat down on the beds and sat quietly for a period time and occasionally calling out. This room felt a little more comfortable, but for some reason I was getting the impression that the sick bay may have been intended for other things as well as a sick bay. Ken I both felt those others things were either being done or were set to happen, for instance testing, experiments and such like. Whether it was to research exposure to radiation or something familiar, but Ken I also both felt that the exhibits in that room were not as we were led to believe.

Vigil 2 (Middle Floor)
In this vigil we decided to try glass divination on one of the offices just of the main floor. The Main floor here, look as if it was the communications hub for local authorities in different sectors, in the event of a nuclear attack. We also set up a table tipping exercise at the same time. We began to call out and requested that the glass move or the table was tipped. The glass moved about half an inch, but that was about it. I was, in a way, pleased that it didn't move much because in previous investigations the glass moved for us every time, and this time it didn't which goes to show that no-one was forcing it to move. The table also didn't move. However, I felt someone playing with my hair or placing the palm of their hand on the back of my head. It was no way malicious, and definitely felt female, whether or not something took a shine to me or not, we will never know…. Unfortunately!

Next we moved to the main floor and sat or stood silently but nothing really happened. But you could certainly sense what a busy fretful place it could have been if in full swing. Apart from the strong feeling that this area could be predominately female nothing else happened.

We then moved to the other large room with the display in the middle. The feeling changed as it felt that this was mainly a male area, more of a thinking and theory type of area where bigger decisions would have been made, but whether it was ever used remains to be seen.

We did hear occasional taps as if someone was typing but we couldn't completely tell. Unfortunately we heard other group members moving about upstairs so a lot of sounds had to be debunked.

Vigil 3 (Bottom Floor)
In this area it was more of a mechanical area, this was the area where the filtration was operated or going to be operated, against attack.
It was a very dark area, and sound was going to be amplified because of the type of room it was. We heard a few sounds like shouting but the voice was female although very faint, we couldn't determine whether it the ducts or the other group.

We then moved onto into the next room where the pipes were. We sat silent for a while and heard numerous thumps. We called out and requested that two successive thumps could be made in reply to questions, This happened on numerous occasions, in definitely sounded as if it was coming from the room we were in, this definitely could not be explained as something natural. This area probably seemed the most active for me.

Vigil 4 (Tunnel Entrance)
Due to the fact we couldn't access the Gatekeepers cottage we started our final vigil in the tunnel entrance. If anything was going to happen this certainly was the place to be I felt.

We started off at the far end of the tunnel near the cottage it certainly felt a bit eerie but it could easily be put down to the fact that it was very echoic and dark, we stood silent for a while and then later called out. Unfortunately nothing happened. We then decide to go to the other end of the tunnel, but the really unfortunate annoying thing was the sound recording of the weather forecast, which drove you demented after a while. But as we walked from one end of the tunnel to the other I was at the back and felt I was being followed and felt myself walking faster and faster as if the darkness was enveloping me, again I was going to put this down to the environment we were in.

We were also requested by another team to try an experiment whereby we threw a coin down into the tunnel and requested for it to be returned; we tried this several times throwing the coin further each time, but no response unfortunately. I just wished we were able to turn off the radio, as I'm sure we would have heard a few unexplained noises however this was a constant sea and air weather report station for the entire area so it needed to stay on.

Summary
Despite the lack of activity in general this place was fantastic, and would love to return one day for another investigation. The pure fact of how secret this place was surely hides more secrets internally, and hopefully we will find out one day. I'm certainly going to research this place now we have done investigation to try and find first hand accounts on what it was like to work there, or being prepared to work there.

A great night as a whole!!

Maria Street

Having visited this location once before on a day trip, I was a little anxious about it to say the least. I had arrived on a hot August day, and left feeling so negative and depressed that I swore I would never go back. However I plucked up the courage to return, this time on a wet and cold November day. I travelled down with Di (Thanks Di) and we arrived around 4pm at Matt's house. He had very kindly invited us for tea before setting off for Kelvedon. (Thanks Matt, it was lovely).

After settling in, we were led on a guided tour by Mike the owner. I was in Team 2 with Ken, Leanne, Maureen, Mark L and guest Denise. We started on the top floor and made our way to the first room where bunk beds were. Not a lot happened here although we could hear taps from the adjoining room. Ken went in and sat on a bottom bunk where he felt there was somebody sat next to him. I stood up against the bed next to him and got the name Mitchell. I then got the name Abramovitch, but wasn't sure of the nationality of this name. Mark confirmed it was Russian. It may not have been the name, which was relevant, more so the fact it was Russian. Others could feel breezes but not a lot else, so we moved into the mock operation theatre. I say 'mock up' because we did not really feel that it was ever used for this purpose. Ken sensed a Doctor in a white coat and I felt he was not a Doctor of medicine, more a nuclear physicist, which is not surprising considering our location! I also got the expression 'Lab Rat' in my head which was really interesting because Ken felt, as did Mark, that experiments were carried out in this room. There was a very definite scientist connection there. Ken also felt he was Russian and that he had defected. I felt this was because his country was trying to force him into a direction in his work that he did not want to go.

Our next vigil was on the middle floor where the operations room would have been. We made our way into a side room and set up an experiment. Four of us were sat around a table doing glass divination whilst the other two sat at the smaller table and tried table tipping. We called out and asked for the glass or the table to move in response to our questions. The glass moved a couple of times but nothing really tangible. Mark felt that this was predominantly a female environment, as did Ken. On a more amusing note, I noticed that a song was going through my head. As realisation hit, I had to laugh, as the song was 'Push the button' by the Sugababes. Very apt! Things were very quiet in this room, so we moved out into the larger area. We called out and a couple of times we thought we could hear a keyboard clicking but cannot be sure. We moved along into another spot where I had the impression of pigs and bacon. No idea why.

Our next vigil was on the bottom floor where all the ventilation ducts were. We started in the far area, where I had the names, Martin, Andrew, and Smith. I also got the impression there had been an accident here and it had 'been an accident waiting to happen' I also got the sensation of falling. There were a lot of audible taps and thumps down here but the sound carried very well in this place, so we are not sure if this was other teams or paranormal activity. Having said that, they did seem to occur when questions were being asked. We moved back into the first room we entered and I sat on the stairs by the entrance door. There were once again taps and thumps and cold spots were felt. I also got the impression of a duck and, bizarrely, duck soup. I could speculate on that all day, but unless somebody knows what it means, I cannot comment.

Our last vigil was in the entrance corridor where Alan's team had just conducted a very successful experiment. They had thrown a 10p piece up the corridor and seemingly lost it. Then, just as they were leaving they heard it being thrown. They turned around to see it spinning and accompanied by another 10p. Its times like that, you wished you had thrown a pound! Anyway, Alan gave me the money to try to replicate the experience. I did this without telling my team what had happened, but we were not to have the same luck. We had to cut this vigil short as one of the exhibitions could not be turned off and it was a lady giving radio reports of the weather conditions across the world. It was very hard to concentrate so we made our way back. Funnily enough, when I look back, it was this vigil that was the creepiest, probably because of a disembodied voice booming out into the darkness.

All in all, a worthwhile second visit, if only to lay my own personal ghosts to rest. A big thank you to Mike for trusting us with the place for the whole night.

Overview
As soon as I heard about this investigation I knew that it was going to be an interesting one. Paranormal investigations to one side, just the fact that we were going to be underground in a nuclear-proof bunker was enough to get the inner geek in me excited! Little did I know just how interesting the investigation itself was going to be.

Vigil one
My team (Julie, Selina, Alison and Sandy) started the investigation at the bottom of the bunker in a corridor. We started off the vigil by splitting up, Julie Selina and myself at the far end and Alison and Sandy further back along the corridor. The corridor was cold when we started and continued to get colder, despite our body heat being there. There was also an intermittent draft that would blast us with icy cold air, which seemed to be coming from the direction of a locked door at the end of the corridor. However when trying to confirm this fact we could not feel any draft at all coming from this doorway! Selina picked up some movement and apparent light anomalies on the video camera and we all agreed that it felt like there was a presence with us. I had the impression of a stern woman in uniform telling us of for being in there. Alison and Sandy rejoined us and told us that they'd had a stone apparently thrown at them (there was no where that this stone could have come from). We swapped over and Julie, Selina and I moved down the corridor. Sure enough we too had a stone thrown at us. I also at one point felt as if something was gently tickling the back of my neck, Julie checked it out in case there was a bug or insect but there was nothing there. We picked up on some odd EMF meetings in the middle of the corridor, away from the power lines. It would come and go and seemed to follow us as we moved along the corridor. We also seemed to make out a light at the end of the corridor that was slowly moving around, we went to investigate to see if it could have been a reflection of something, but could not see what it could have been. There was also a feeling of anger there, but also one of sadness. The anger seemed to be masking the sadness and I had the mental image of a man standing at the end of the corridor watching someone going down the corridor and knowing that he would never see him again. I would say that was what the sadness was and also the anger too.

Vigil two
Our second vigil was up at the top of the bunker, in rooms that were set up as dormitories and an infirmary. Many of these beds had mannequins in, which I found a little disconcerting at first but eventually got used to. We moved through to the infirmary and set our selves up here. This was a room with a very odd atmosphere, I felt as if we were being watched and it was very off putting. After a little while of calling out we decided to try a glass divination experiment on one of the medical beds present. As we got up to move over to it, Julie discovered that her right leg had gone dead, she'd experienced no pins and needles or cramp, it had just gone dead. After a minute or two, the feeling returned to it, however again there was none of the usual pins and needles that you would expect. Eerily, the mannequin on the nearby operating table only had it's left leg - it's right leg mysteriously missing... coincidence or paranormal? Who knows.
We started the glass divination and weren't getting very much from it, however Julie noticed that Alison was starting to act a bit oddly. To me it seemed as if she was a bit drunk, she had a bit of an inane smile on her face and her reactions seemed somewhat... disjointed. I found this quite an odd experience and I was starting to get a bit worried. Julie asked her what she was doing and she responded that she was following her orders of watching the glass. We ended the experiment and took Alison out of the room and she seemed to be fine again. After a few minutes of gathering ourselves we moved round to a small table in another room and tried again with the glass divination. Again we seemed to get no real response from the glass, however I found myself intrigued by what seemed to be a blue glow to the glass. The next thing I knew Alison was picking up the glass and moving it off of the table and everyone else was looking at me. Apparently I had just been sat there, with my finger on the glass, just staring at it for ages, I had not been responding to the others in anyway. Julie had apparently been clicking her fingers in front of my face and everything, not only had I not reacted to any of this, I also have no memory of it!! This I found very disturbing. When asked what had happened all I could say was about the glass being blue. Very, very odd!

Vigil three
Our third vigil was on the middle floor of the bunker. It was a large room with lots of desks and various office like equipment. Without us being in there for very long, the battery in the video camera died and it was a freshly charged one! We spent some time sitting in the main room before moving to a side room for another glass divination experiment. There was a bit of an unpleasant smell in this room which came and went and some of the team felt as if there was someone standing in the doorway watching us. During the divination, both Julie and I both, independently, stated that we felt like picking the glass up and throwing it against the wall. Why, I couldn't tell you!
We moved around to the other half of the floor, which to me, felt more like a school room than the comms room that it was set up to be. We took up seats here but did not really pick up on anything, in fact we seemed to degenerate into giggling and laughing, with poor old Sandy being the brunt of most of our jokes.
We decided to end the vigil and return to the base camp. Interestingly, I noted that pretty much as soon as we left the room our laughing and joking seemed to fade away and we started acting normal again.

Vigil four
Our last vigil was once again down on the bottom floor of the bunker, this time in the rooms there as opposed to the long corridor. I really did not like the feeling down there. Maybe it was the after effects of the first couple of vigils, but these rooms had me spooked. So much so that, despite the fact that we were sitting in practically absolute darkness, I still had my eyes closed just in case something paranormal happened. Not only is this rather silly as it was so dark I wouldn't have been able to see anything anyway, but the whole point in us being there in the first place was to try and see something paranormal!! Despite knowing how stupid it was, I couldn't help myself. Maybe my nerves were shattered by this point. At one point, I was refusing to look towards the door as I was expecting to see someone there. Silly old me. We didn't seem to pick up on very much down here at all, I know I certainly didn't.

Conclusion
This was a great investigation. Not only is the bunker a great place in itself, but the apparent paranormal goings on here were quite potent. On a personal level I've never experienced anything like the apparent trance I went into here. Would I want to come back here? Definitely! If only to go back into the bottom floor corridor and see if we could pick up on anything else as that seemed to be the most potentially likely place to do so.

Ken Taylor

Kelvedon Hatch nuclear bunker is an investigation I was really anxious to investigate and could not wait to get started.
After a tour around we divided into teams, my team was number 2 with Maria, Mark, Maureen, Leeanne and Denise.

Middle floor
Operations room

Not a lot happened on this floor except that one of the mannequins I had noticed on the tour earlier was looking in a different direction. We all heard footsteps from up above and Sitting on the bed in here I had the feeling of a Russian doctor being here, also the smell of TCP/Ether. I think that tests were carried out on humans but not operations, but nothing else happened.

Bottom Floor

In the boiler room I had in my minds eye a man standing in between the boilers he was working here, also a spanner was lying all by its self on the floor, this I think I would have noticed again on the tour.

Entrance corridor

Maria had thrown a coin onto the floor but sadly it wasn't returned. We all walked up and down along this corridor, all the while in here I had the feeling that we were being watched, no other occurrence in here.

Top Floor

Although I didn't experience a lot at this location I really enjoyed it, I was quite surprised by the presence of catastrophe the resident cat and what a friendly cat it was.
Thanks Mike for letting us visit your fascinating piece of history. If there were to be a return I will certainly be the first on the list.

Val Butler

As I have a fear of being underground I was very nervous about going on this investigation. I soon found out the worse part of all was going through the corrugated iron tunnel right at the beginning. Once inside and in the canteen area I was greeted by members of SPUK and a very friendly well fed cat named Catastrophe and what a sweetheart he was.
After a guided tour on all three floors we split into our groups.

My team 4 was with Di, Steen, Jim, Matt, Wayne and myself.
We proceeded to the bottom floor where all the big fans are.

I think we had a fault on the temperature gun as it was reading 10-5 then to 22-4 EMF 0 then going mad. I called out5 and we all heard a sound like a plane going over. Wayne whistled and team heard a whistle back and Di felt very sick, Wayne felt as though someone was standing next to him. My new batteries in my camera drained then a minute later showed that they were full. Di calls out and a thud is heard. We then went into the boiler room. I started to call out nothing is heard, Di feels that someone died in an accident. I had a pain in my chest, Di gets the name of George, Jim has a pain in his head, Jim and Di both feel sick. All the team hears footsteps. On investigating through the double doors there was a wooden ramp. Di walked on it and it made the same sound as the footsteps. Wayne now has a headache, I get the name of Peter and Jim the name of Higgins then all of us hear voices.

We decided to hold a seance in the administrating room and we all heard the sound of people that were enjoying themselves. Again we all heard footsteps and thought they may be coming from upstairs. I got the name of Richard Steiger and Wayne gets the name of Harris.

Commissioners Room
The Camcorder won't focus on Di. Wayne feels a cold breeze. Stein threw a penny onto the floor but nothing happened. Thoughts in my head of a man saying very sternly what are you doing here? Then Steen felt cold all down his back.

Prime Ministers Room
Nothing was picked up by anyone in this room

Information Room
Wayne and Di immediately smell Ether. I had the feeling that someone had fallen into cement and was buried in the walls it was quite a strong feeling. Di hears beating a pulse sound like it was the heart of the bunker.

Medical Room
Jim called out, I felt very uncomfortable in this room. Steen hears faint music possible from women. I asked out if there were any Saxons that were here before the building was built but no response

2nd dormitory and small room
We held glass divination in here but there was nothing coming through, I got the name of Wright and I could see a lot of land connected to Wright, but alas all was very quiet.

Switchboard Room
Walking around this room I heard a sigh, then in my mind I could see rows of little wooden houses, all was very quiet in this and surrounding rooms.

Entrance Corridor
Wayne and I tried the Ouija board but nothing came through. I called out and asked "did you die here" and the plastic covering on the bunk bed moved. Again I got the name of Wright and it had to be spelt with a W. Jim got the name of Perish/Parish and everyone felt frozen. Di's legs below the knees felt crushed, we all walked to the far end of the long corridor and both Wayne and Di heard voices from the end that we had come from. We called out to spirit to turn the recording of the lady giving the weather forecast off, we were talking when Wayne noticed that for a couple of seconds the recording had stopped. Wayne felt someone was following him and when Steen took some photos, Wayne had some orbs on his back.

This investigation was very atmospheric I didn't have the feeling that I was underground at all, which was nice. I really enjoyed the evening oh and thank you Wayne, Di and Steen for staying with me the whole night.
I would like to return to this site in the future so if there is any chance count me in.

Di Moore

This was something that I had never investigated before, a Nuclear Bunker in Essex! Maria and I travelled together from Southampton it took us about 2 hours, When we arrived at the Bunker it was so muddy, we went inside and met the Group from London & Essex.
We had a tour round with the Owner Mike Parrish he made this very interesting, thank you Mike.

Vigil 1&2 Bottom Floor

This was a (I found out later the Bio Room) very large place 100ft underground. It looked like large boilers. We stood in silence then called out. We heard noises, which we investigated, and there were cold spots, which could have been drafts from ventilation shafts. I did think of the name George and an accident, which ended in death. We heard footsteps and I was sure there was someone from spirit there. Now for break.

Vigil 3/4 Entrance Corridor
In the Entrance Corridor there was the load speaker of a woman talking about the weather forecasts and we started one end but nothing for me, then we went to the other end I sat on one of the bunk beds. After some calling out by Val the bed I was sitting on moved this was spotted by another group member and I was sitting still so I know this wasn’t me moving the bed. We walked to the other end and Wayne felt he had someone walking behind him, but we were in front of him. There were some bags on the wall, which I was drawn to. I asked spirit to tell me which one of the bags belonged to him as I felt this spirit was a man. I touched each bag and asked if this was his then I asked him to move his bag or just move any bag as we were about to move away. It seemed that one bag moved which was noticed but other members, there were no drafts! Break time.

Vigil 5&6 Top Floor
Nothing happened for me, I was feeling tired and was not feeling very well either.

Vigil 7&8 Middle Floor
Once again nothing for me.
The time was now 4.45am and it was time to pack up and go home. I was not looking forward to long journey home to Southampton!

Gary Catlin

The bunker it located on Kelvedon Hatch just outside Brentwood Essex. This former military base has been decommissioned for some years however the current owners have kept it open to the public as a museum.
Being in the middle of nowhere and open to all the elements I felt that maybe we would get some form of response or capture some sprit activity, but having to keep in mind that it is some 100ft under ground and therefore temperature and humidity may play apart in the investigation.
We started with a walk round of the base to get a feel for the place and to know what rooms/tunnels we would be investigating. All I can say is that this is a very strange and atmospheric place, not a lot has changed since the base was decommissioned, which I felt that added to the night.

We started off on the middle floor, made up of offices and a big communications area. We spent time in the first office to see if the group could feel anything. Things did start off slow, a lot of noises from the wall facing the communications area. Taps and bangs seem to echo around this area. We moved out to the communications area, there are a lot of dummies and old equipment set out around this room. Once again taps, and it seem like vocal noise as well, we could not be sure if it was the echo’s from the ventilation ducks which all interlinked through the base. We moved around to the area at the back of the communications room, this seem to be not as cold or as open as the previous room, Steve did start to pic up on a woman standing in the small hall the joined these rooms, from what I can remember I do not think he got a name, but the letter V, or D may have been mentioned.

After a short break, we moved to the Tunnel. This tunnel was used as a secondary entrance to the base. We spent a lot of time at the far end of the tunnel near the exit, calling out, but the continual voice that is part of the tour was left playing this did make it difficult to hear if response was being made. The group then split with 3 left at the tunnel exit, and three at the base entrance. Once again the continual voice from the tour was making hearing responses difficult. We decide to try a physical experiment by tossing a 10pence peace down towards the middle of the tunnel and see if it could be tossed back to us. We left it for about 15mins with no success or so we thought. We all then moved towards the middle of the tunnel, upon moving towards the middle, the three of us were looking to find the 10pence we had tossed before. Once we met up in the middle of the tunnel we concluded that we must have missed it and would pick it up on the back to mess hall. We all sat down and join hands to try and encourage a response or some sort of acknowledgement. After a while of trying and with the constant voice from the tour we did decided that we would head back to the mess hall. On the way back the group were looking for the missing 10pence, about quarter of the way back to the base entrance of the tunnel we heard a coin being dropped behind us. When we turn to see, we found our 10pence on the floor with a second 10pence next to it, one facing heads the other facing tails. We all agreed that none of us could have missed one 10pence let alone 2 of then next to each other.

After a break we moved to the Radio/Map room on the lower lever. The radio room with the BBC would have used to transmit information from was not really a bad feeling place for myself I must admit that I did not feel anything really in this area, and I think that most of the group felt the same. The map room is a big room with lots of old communications equipment and large maps on plastic on the walls, we all sat around a table in the middle of the room and we were doing glass tip-in. Steve started to pick up a sprit of a male who had worked in the base in its hay-day. During the glass tip-in we asked for a sign or some sort of noise with this a cough came from one of the room which is lock and marked as CCTV, we tried calling and knocking on the door to see if anyone was inside this room but had no response. During the rest of the investigation in this room we had 4 more coughs and what sounded like someone walking across the room. We did not manage to move to the execration room due to us taking a lot of time to investigate the map room. We did manage to catch the sounds on the camcorder.

After a break we did on our last vigil on the top floor where the dormitories are medical rooms are. By this point the whole group we very tired and we did not get a lot of success from this. It was strange due to the fact when we did the walk around we all said that the top floor felt the strongest, but once we had reached there I think we all were to tired.

Overall I was very happy to do this investigation and feel that a return to the bunker would maybe give us some more evidence maybe in the summer as well to see if that would add to anything.

I would like to thank all the people in the Southern Paranormal UK group for a very interesting night, also to pass my thanks on to the owners of the Secret Nuclear Bunker and finally to Steve for inviting me as a guest. Now I have joined the SPUK group I look forward to investigation other locations with them.

Maureen Westwood

I was really looking forward to our investigation at Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, and I couldn’t wait to get started. We started on the top floor, in the rooms that were once the dormitories. The rooms were stuffed full of bunk beds, some with scary looking dummies laying in them! Apart from a few unaccountable noises, we didn’t really experience anything in these rooms. However, when we moved onto the operating theatre, Ken and Maria were both picking up on the presence of a Russian Scientist who seemed to have done some sort of experimentation on humans. Oddly enough, there were items throughout the building that had Russian writing on them.

We then investigated the middle level, where we tried glass divination and table tipping, which were both unsuccessful. The whole level was very quiet, although Ken could feel that there were spirits with us, they just didn’t want to make contact.

Finally, we were down on the lower level, in the plant room. This was the worst area for me – I was feeling really sick here, and I don’t know why. Also, Leeanne was feeling uneasy, Maria kept feeling that she was being touched and Ken kept seeing lights on the walls. In one of the side rooms, we all saw a naked eye orb in the same place at the same time!! We were all glad to get out of there.

We then investigated the entrance corridor. No one sensed anything here, and because a recorded message was playing, which couldn’t be turned off, it was very distracting, we soon left this area.

Laura Brown

Middle Floor
I did not pick up on much on this floor but Steve saw a figure of a man, and we felt the presence of a woman on this floor. We kept hearing a knocking noise and noises as if a small stone was being thrown. We split up into two teams after we walked round and completed the base line test. I believe that the other part of our team did pick up on something and heard a very load knocking noise.
Throughout this floor we constantly heard the noise as if furniture was being dragged around from the floor above us. We could hear this noise on every floor that we went to. It was very load but not the noise of just a chair or table being moved it sounded like someone was changing round the furniture on the entire floor, which was a bit spooky

Bottom Floor & corridor
It was very cold on this floor. We all called out at the far end of the corridor and did not get anything, so we split up into two teams one at each end of the corridor. I called out but we did not receive any communication. It did feel quite eerie though at our end of the corridor. The other part of our team shouted done to us to say that they were going to throw a coin half way to see what happens. Nothing happened but as we all started to walk back they found their coin and another coin was thrown back also which was weird as we scanned the floor as we was walking down.
The room with the big map table we carried out the glass tipping experience and picked up a lot of activity in this room. The spirit that came through was male I believe and it was a special day to him either a birthday or the day he died. Steve also picked up on name and Steve was the main person that the spirited wanted to communicate with. The glass was moving quite swiftly along the table. We could also hear a load coughing noise coming from the CCTV room behind us which we thought was empty but could not be sure.

Top Floor
We did not pick up on anything on the top floor, we was all very tired. We laid on the beds and called out to see if we could pick up on any activity all was very quite. Over all Louise and me had a great night and we really enjoyed it, one of the best we have been to.

Steen Spencer

Overview
The bunker didn’t seem very active to me apart from two spots in particular. I felt that there was more activity coming from the cottage and not really the bunker.

Upper Floor
I didn’t pick up or feel anything here.

Middle Floor
I didn’t really feel anything until we got to the open plan office space, where I felt the presence of something watching. It felt like someone was hiding and moving around, strange feeling; quite eerie. I also heard quite a few noises coming from the briefing rooms. When we were in the corner briefing room we could hear lots of noise coming from above; shouting, furniture moving etc. When questioned, the Team above said that they weren’t making any noise.

Lower Floor
I didn’t pick up or feel anything here.

Lower Floor – Passage
I didn’t feel anything until we got to the end of the passage (cottage end), where I felt like something was looking over my shoulder. It felt like someone was standing right behind me watching every move I made. I felt it was something authoritative and I didn’t like turning my back to it.
