Introduction

The members of Southern Paranormal UK never need to have their arms twisted to revisit the Grosvenor Hotel in Shaftesbury, the groups befriended location. Even on a Monday night we were able to form a good few of us to investigate and due to previous sightings, experiences and Footage caught, we were all looking forward to our return trip.

We have never really covered what things have been seen or heard in the hotel as we feel it is an ongoing investigation and we never want to put ideas into the minds of the investigators. This visit all I was willing to say to people was that 2 spirits had been sensed in the dance floor area and that was Christopher and an old lady called Agatha, even this was not mentioned until our dance hall vigil was well under way.

Our thanks to Jane and the staff of the Grosvenor who always make us feel so welcome.

12.26am Abbie is anxious. She is standing in corner (by bathroom door). She feels angry and seems cross at Steve for standing in the opposite corner.
12.28am Julie notices how silent it is in room, then gets slight breeze on her face (possibly Steve moving at the side of her)
12.30am Abbie is feeling really cross and she looks really stroppy. Maureen suggests she comes out of the corner and sees how she feels. When she steps away she feels fine.
12.35am Maureen sees light on wall behind Steve (in far corner, near cupboard)
12.36am Temperature taken, room is now 13.8 which is an expected raise as there are 4 people in it.
12.37am Julie and Abbie feel a draught from the cupboard corner, however the door has remained closed.
12.40am Abbie calling out – Large creak/cracking noise from Tall boy / Wardrobe. On investigation there is only a hairdryer in the unit. Team all try and get the unit to repeat the noise by opening doors, jumping in front of it etc. Can not recreate the noise.
12.55am Temperature 14. Maureen sees another light on the far wall which seemed to appear then fade.
12.57am Steve sees a dark light moving along the wall behind him towards the bathroom. Experimented with different light sources camcorder, torch etc to see if we could recreate – could not.

END OF INVESTIGATION

Personal Reports

Julie Harwood

This was my 3rd visit to investigate the Grosvenor and I was looking forward to it as if it was my first. The Grosvenor always seems to turn something up, even if you experience little on the night, it seems that when you review footage you always seem to catch an odd noise, an strange shape on camera or like at our first investigation a door that opens and closes seemingly on its own.

The first vigil was a séance in the dance hall an area that to date we had not investigated. It was the meeting base for our October Halloween event and a couple of people had said to me they had felt strange feelings while on a break from vigils in there. I was told 2 names by investigators and they were Christopher and Agatha. I did not tell the rest of the group and so during the séance, after a little while I asked David to call out these names to see if we could evoke a response. Nothing was apparent at the time, however looking back on my digital photos after the investigation I saw not only lots of orbs (which may have been dust) but a very strange misty behind David’s neck. This photo (which can be seen on this report page, the original and the enhanced) was taken at the time David said he could feel something at the back of his neck. This picture I think deserves further analysis to see if we can determine what it is.

The second vigil was myself, Steve, Maureen and Abbie and was in Room 9. Many things have been experienced in this room over our last 2 investigations and also by staff and guests of the hotel but I myself had experienced nothing in there. We called out and Abbie did appear to be very nervous of a particular area in the room. Steve and Maureen also seemed drawn to the corner of the room by the cupboard door. Steve (as the rest of us) was intruiged by a static cold spot that was 2 degrees lower temperature than the rest of the room. More interesting was this cold spot did instantly disappear a couple of minutes into the vigil. Abbie called out and a loud creaking noise from the tall boy spooked the group. I can not explain what this was. It was very very loud, definitely came from the cupboard/ tall boy and was not repeated. Was this wood settling down or was something indeed answering our request for a noise to be made within the room. We may never know.

Our third vigil was the same group again in the Restaurant. The group picked up a lot of orbs and light anomalies on our various digital cameras prior to starting the vigil but when we sat down to try a glass divination and séance all seemed quiet. The one thing I do remember was the intense feeling of icy cold, in this normally (not warm) but bearable area.

Our fourth vigil was Ed, Abbie and myself. Again we sat talking, as all seemed very quiet. We did pick up some orbs on camera and Ed even tried some scrying in the large wall mirror but to no avail. This was the first time on the investigation that I sensed someone watching us. It was a strange feeling and I could not put my finger on who or why just that to me it felt like someone was watching us. I did not mention this to the group as I think suggestion plays a big part in peoples experiences and I really wanted to see if anyone else mentioned it. Another thing was that on a couple of occasions in this vigil I was sure I heard a baby cry. These were not long sounds but to me very distinctive. Unfortunately I can not be sure that this was not a noise generated by equipment behind the bar area (i.e. fridge’s, electric’s etc) although it did not sound to me like it was in the room with us, but further afield. No one else heard it, which was a shame as I would have liked someone else’s opinion on it.

Our fifth and final vigil was as a whole group in the Restaurant. Several of the team felt something was hiding from us in there and we all knew what good results the restaurant had yielded on our last visit so we were all keen to try one last time in there.

Brian, Ed, David, Steve & Abbie all sat round the table and I sat out to film and take notes. The glass took aprox 15 minutes to start moving but then it spelt out many sequences of numbers that at the time just seemed like pointless repetition, however it did spell out the name Hanna GM. The series of letters was a mystery as it kept returning to the same ones over and over again and so a couple of the group have a theory on this and are currently researching a couple of likely possibilities. Once this has been fully researched, the findings will be added to this report.

Again, another enjoyable night at the Grosvenor. Although I did not experience anything I would describe as paranormal, the photos and footage that have come out of the investigation have yet again amazed us. A mist captured on digital camera and invisible set of but very audible footsteps, as a more scientific person, in my opinion are among our best clips to date and deserve further analysis.

Many thanks to Jane and the staff of the Grosvenor for once again opening their very friendly doors to us. Until the next time!

David Ireland

Well we have just finished the Grosvenor Hotel in Shaftesbury and I have to say it was a very interesting investigation. When we were there last time for the public event, lots of things happened for my group in practically every vigil. That wasn’t the case this time. We all arrived and met up in the bar area and had a few soft drinks before setting up the equipment. Maureen and me completed the baseline tests in room’s 19 and 24, the dance area (which we didn’t investigate last time), the mad mans rooms and the dining room which was pretty active for my group last time. Apart from a few cold spots in each room there was nothing of any interest.

Vigil 1

Our first vigil was a group séance in the dining room, which Julie had asked me to lead. Jane the hotel manager joined us and two other guests who had also joined us on the first investigation of the hotel in June 2005. We decided just to do a normal séance without the use of a glass or Ouija board etc. I began by saying the protection prayer as I always do when opening and closing a séance. I began to call out but got no response whatsoever. Brian began to call out but again got nothing. Julie suggested that she give us the name that two guests had picked up on at the public event. The name was Agatha so Brian tried using that. For a few minutes we didn’t get anything and then I began to channel the spirit of a woman. She was standing in one of the rooms that we were due to be investigating. She was crying and seemed very distressful. I also saw her looking out the window whilst watching a man walk away. Julie had begun calling out at this point and I asked her to call out and ask the lady that I was channelling what was wrong. Julie did but I couldn’t understand what the lady was saying to me. After a little while she was gone and we decided to close the séance down. I must admit that was my first ever experience of properly connecting with a spirit and having them speak to me so I was a little shocked. I wasn’t to sure whether the other members had actually believed that I channelled the spirit.

Unfortunately in the next 3 vigils absolutely nothing happened. So there is nothing for me to report.

The last séance was very interesting to me. We all gathered again as a group in the dining room for a group glass divination, which I again opened and closed. I began to call out but again got nothing. Brian started to call out but got nothing as well. He then called out again and the glass began to move very slightly. He continued to call out and the glass was moving gradually faster and faster I’m guessing to gain energy. Although I am quite convinced that we did communicate with a spirit the glass was going to very random letters and numbers so we couldn’t ascertain and clear information as to who they were. Half way through the séance Abbie seemed to fall into a slight trance. Julie called her name a few times and she came round. I don’t know whether it was because she was feeling tired or whether it was paranormal. We all decided that the séance wasn’t gong anywhere so we decided to close it. We all gathered in the kitchen to pack up and looked at the numbers and letters that Julie had wrote down from the divination. There was a slight pattern and Abbie had an idea that it could be Morse code. The last time Abbie was at the Grosvenor she said that when she was in one of the rooms she could picture someone tapping out Morse code and then pacing as though they were waiting for an urgent message. When I was told about Abbies experience I believed it straight away because Abbie like me and a few others is extremely sensitive. She was convinced that it could be Morse code but I wasn’t convinced. However when I came home the next morning and thought about it I decided that she could be onto something.

Conclusion

If you were to ask me if the Grosvenor hotel In Shaftesbury is haunted I would say definitely. In this case I think that the occurrences would be very difficult to explain to a sceptic because personally I found that my experiences were more psychic than physical. All in all a very interesting experiment and I would like to thank Jane the manager for allowing us to return to the Grosvenor hotel.

Brian Ward

Vigil 1 [Restaurant] David, Ed, Brian, Jane, Sue & Arron

We started with a protection prayer and started a glass divination experiment I was filming but nothing happened so we closed the table.
We all moved to the other end of the restaurant stood in a circle to do a séance opened up with a protection prayer but again nothing happened a finale attempt to get through to the spirit world but again nothing we decided to try some table tipping but again nothing happened so we closed the table down and went for a break.

Vigil 2. [Room 9]. David, Ed, Brian and Jane

I had high expectation’s for this room as I had heard a lot about this room, we settled down to let the room calm then started to call out, nothing happened.
I found this room very comfortable and I think I could have slept in there with no problems.
There were a few light anomalies caught on night vision and they seemed to show themselves when one of the team called out, my only answer is that it must have been intelligent dust .

Vigil 3. [Mad Mans Room]. Steve, Brian

The corridor to this room I found more unnerving then the room itself , When Steve and I got into the mad mans room the temperature started to drop the first temperature reading was 7c going down to about 4c it the wash room area of the room.
We decided to try an automatic hand writing experiment with a spirit writer but again nothing happened so we decided to close it down.

Group Glass divination in the Restaurant

This experiment I found the most interesting of the night.
Abbie, David, Ed, Steve and myself, Julie took notes and filmed.
The divination was started with a protection prayer and it took sometime before the glass started to move. We possibly picked up a young girl/lady. The glass spelled out Hanna. We asked for more information but kept getting random letter’s and numbers . I have a hunch about this lady and the letters and numbers so I will leave this now until I have done some research, we closed down the divination and called the end to the night and packed the gear up and went home.

Conclusion

Many thanks to the staff of the tel for having us back to do another Investigation. All in all I really enjoyed finding a bit more history of this Old coach house.

Steve Gilbert

This investigation was a smaller group and to that end the experiments and vigils were much more controlled than before and that is what made the night so interesting.

The first vigil in room 9 was probably one of the best so far for atmosphere. Minutes after entering, the ambience thermometer picked up a very unusual cold spot (2 degrees lower than anywhere else) in the far corner of the room(away from the window). This cold spot disappeared strangely after a few minutes and matched the rest of the room temp. There was a very odd clatter in the wardrobe in the opposing corner that startled most of us, again unexplained as there was only a hairdryer in the cupboard. Orbs were caught in the dining room in similar locations on different cameras, which again is odd.

The best evidence from the night must be the audio footsteps caught on tape and also the video camera at the same time (as you will have seen on this report page)

As I had checked and started the tapes myself, I am aware of the layout of the room (kitchen) was such that anyone entering the vicinity would have been caught in a reflection on the wall and showed up on the camcorder, which is not so. Furthermore the team were all accounted for so in my opinion it goes forward as one of the best pieces of evidence the S.P team have to date.

Maureen Taylor

Our second visit here, so most of us had some idea of what to expect. We started the night with a seance in the dance hall, but I felt nothing here, and I suspect that very little happened for anyone. I took several photos, some of which show a number of orbs, a few of which I suspect are reflection from dust particles, in particular those around the floor; however, there are a couple that may well be genuine orbs. The name Lilian came into my mind, and I get the feeling that there is a connection with one of the orbs in this room, probably the one against the wall in the raised seating area.

Vigil 1 - Room Room 9

For our group this was the busiest vigil location of the night. For several of the group there was a reluctance to stand in the corner of the room to the far side of the bed from the door, and in fact Abbie was so disturbed by it that she retreated to the corner diagonally opposite, and stayed there through much of the vigil. At times Julie and I could feel a cold draught across our knees, as if someone was pacing to and fro across the room, in front of the windows. towards the end of the vigil there was a very loud noise from somewhere in the region of the tall boy in the corner of the room, loud enough to startle all of us, and Steve and Abbie, who were standing closest to it, actually ran away from it towards the other side of the room - there was a definite feeling that it was about to topple over on to them.

Vigil 2 - the restaurant

We spent several minutes taking photos at the beginning of this vigil, keeping the lights on for a while to start with, and I have several orbs on camera. The problem with photos here is that there are so many surfaces that produce reflections around the walls - the ceiling fans for example, and many objects on photos that at first sight look a little like genuine orbs, can be dismissed as such.
As a table was set up for glass divination in here we decided to try it, but with very little in the way of results. I personally felt little in here, but this is a large room and any activity may not have been happening close to us at the time.

Vigil 3 - Room Room 1

6

Just David and I on this vigil, and as this is a small room there isn’t much in the way of seating here, so we both sat on the bed - and were nearly dozing off as we felt so comfortable in the room. Neither of us felt that there was anything going on in here and we finished our vigil a few minutes early, as we were sure that if we had stayed much longer we would both have been sound asleep !!
It was good to be able to make a second visit to an investigation location; however, for me it felt little different on this occasion to what it had on our previous visit. A certain amount of activity was picked up in the same rooms as before, and if anything there was less going on, for me at least, than there had been on the previous occasion.

Ed Ashton

This may sound strange coming from an 'open-minded' sceptic such as myself, but in all honesty I can't imagine a place like the Grovesnor NOT to be haunted!! It appears to have all the obvious trappings of a typical haunted hotel, from the seemingly endless maze of very long corridors to the creepy dark cellar, coupled with the fact that parts of the building itself date back almost 1000 years. Plus of course, over the many years, it has had it's share of numerous visitors and with them, their numerous suspected sightings of unexplained happenings.
I found this investigation to be a little better than when we were last here as there were less people and therefore the individual groups were slightly smaller. However, despite this, the paranormal activity we experienced throughout the night was nil. We tried calling out during each and every vigil but unfortunatley to no avail. During the last vigil in the main restaraunt, we attempted a group seance/divination which resulted in very slight movements from the glass. However, the answers that the glass provided appeared to make no sense whatsoever. A couple of times throughout the evening, I tested out a theory that I have had ever since I have joined the group. I wanted to be alone in certain areas just to see if there was anything there, it may just show itself to one person as opposed to a group of people. Whilst the other members were taking a break, I attempted this at first in the dance hall and later in the restaraunt, spending roughly 10 minutes in each. Because there was no-one else in either of the rooms my senses seemed to be more attuned to the surroundings. Alas, nothing happened! But I still stick by my theory in the hope that hopefully one day it may prove correct!
The Grovesnor is a location that if possible, I would like to re-visit once again. I find it a very interesting and fascinating building and a great place to investigate. As I mentioned earlier, I would like to believe that there is something that has been either seen or indeed felt within it's walls. It's just a question of when or if I will get to experience it!

The video

Below is an audio sample from both a high quality recording deck/microphone placed in the back kitchen and analogue video camera about 10 feet away pointing at it.

The background - The tape deck (and video camera pointing at it) was left running all night but this sound came almost 10 minutes after all the team had left the area and were accounted for in the Dance Hall doing a seance on the other side of the building!

Here is the set up as viewed from the video cameras location

Picture right - shows the tape deck and video camera were started at the same time 10 minutes earlier

Below Audio sample from tape deck - you can clearly hear 5 or 6 footsteps and then after about 5 seconds a click and heavy breath

Below - video clip sample

1. the same sound as recorded on the video camera (Note it is a lot quieter than the audio sample above so may want turn the vol up) allow the page to load for least 1 minute before playing - (broadband users)
