Introduction
We contacted the Fountain Inn after a friend of ours had mentioned that he had heard some strange tales from people who drank in there, about ghostly children and restless spirits related to the Abbey which stands in ruin close by. We were especially interested when Vince Gibson the inn’s current owner replied reporting some similar accounts. Vince himself had experienced a little girl whispering in the beer cellar and cold spots had been felt around the inn. Former members of staff had also reported incidents including one, who witnessed a piano player in the bar after the inn was closed. We were pleased when Vince and his family invited us to investigate the premises, shortly before they were due to move on to manage another pub. We thank Vince, Pat, Pat & Bill for their hospitality (incl plenty of tea and coffee all night) and their willingness to join in with the Southern Paranormal UK team. Hopefully we can come and investigate your new home in the future.

Personal Reports
Julie Harwood
When we approached the Fountain Inn, nestled in Shaftesbury, it was like a little beacon blazing but homely lights and friendly faces inside. I wondered if such a homely little pub could change with lights off.
After meeting Vince and his family and setting up the equipment and baseline tests we split into our groups and started our vigils.
My first vigil was with Wayne and Pat (Vinces mum) in the Skittle alley. Pat & I sat quietly and Wayne walked along the skittle alley filming with the night vision camcorder. On several occasions he reported getting a stabbing pain in his chest towards the top end of the alley, so much so that I offered to take the camcorder from him as he thought it might be making it worse having to hold it up (as his arms also felt very painful and heavy). I carried on filming him and everytime he crossed a certain point on the alley he reported the feelings again. This really interested me as the alley was pitch black (you could not see your hand in front of your face) and so Wayne did not know where he was each time he reported these feelings (as he was walking backwards and forwards) but as I had the night vision I could see it was in exactly the same place each time. When he got the pain in was directly in line with the second to last window). Pat explained to me that this was inline with not only the Well in the grounds but also the Abbey. Shaftesbury is built on a maze of Lay Lines and so could this have been the cause of Wayne’s feelings? I must admit to knowing very little about lay lines and their possible effects but this has made me want to find out more. During this vigil Pat and I did experience several cold breezes after calling out but we were also very aware that we were sat the end by the outside door and so this would be the most likely cause. The only other thing that interested me was that when Wayne called out and asked someone to sit on the chair next to me, a couple of seconds later the chair did creak as if someone had sat down. Pat also heard the creak as it was quite loud however the chairs were in front of a radiator and so it could have realistically been the plastic creaking with the heat from that. I did not experience anything else in this room.
Our next vigil was in the Restaurant. This was a lovely little room and I could imagine that when the tables were fully laid and the fire was blazing and candles on the table it was so homely and atmospheric. For this vigil Wayne, Pat and I were joined by Brian and Suzanne. The team attempted glass divination but unfortunately with no results. Brian did however get a sense of how the room used to be with a big arm chair, fire lit and Pat explained that this would have been the first reception room of the house and pointed out where the front door was (but was now covered/bricked over). I experienced 2 small things in this area. The first was the sound of a woman singing/talking softly coming from the bar area. Suzanne also heard this but unfortunately the rest of the group did not. I looked (as did Suzanne) as we expected to see someone come through from the bar, but on investigation the bar was empty. I think it was possible we had heard a female from one of the other groups upstairs but because of the acoustics of the building it sounded like it was coming from the bar area. The second thing was when we were sat quietly and Brian was calling out. I heard the classic “heavy breath in my ear”. It was slightly unnerving but not enough to make me jump. I was sat in front of the fire so it may have been a gust from the chimney though on inspection I could not feel any breeze from it. My last vigil was back in the Skittle alley with another team as I was interested to see if anyone could pick up on what Wayne had felt earlier. I asked Brian to walk the length of the skittle alley to see if he picked anything up but unfortunately he did not pick up anything in this room. This was a very quiet and much colder vigil.
I have to say that despite my lack of experiences in the pub, it was a pleasure to investigate it and I thank Vince, Pat, Pat and Bill for their hospitality and for their eagerness to join in with the group, which is something, we always appreciate. I wish them well with their upcoming move and hope that they will invite us to investigate their new home.

Well we’ve just finished our investigation at the Fountain Inn in Shaftesbury in Dorset. Unfortunately for me, this was the least active investigation I have been on.
Me, Wayne and Alison met Julie and Abbie at the pub before everyone else had arrived. We sat and had a chat with the Vince who owns the pub. Usually on an investigation I try to ground myself and see if I can pick anything up early but I felt that this place had absolutely no paranormal feeling to it whatsoever. The rest of the group arrived a little bit later and we all had a drink together while we waited for the public to leave the pub. We then got the equipment and began to set up while Brian, Alison, Ed, Abbie and Vince completed the baseline tests. We also had a few guests joining us which as always is a privilege as they are keen to join in and are interested in what we do. We all got into our groups and went to our first vigil area.
Vigil 1
For my first vigil I was with Sue and Steve and we were in the dining room. Unfortunately the dining room led off from the main bar area and didn’t have a door that we could close so we had a lot of light coming into the dining room which for me really affected the way that we completed our séance. We first sat and took some EMF readings and temperature readings but couldn’t report anything unusual. We first started out with a glass divination which was very uneventful as we had no movement at all. We were supposed to be in there for an hour but as there was nothing happening we decided that we would finish early. The only thing from this vigil that I can report as being very strange was that Sue had started off with a completely full battery on her camera. She had the camera on for 20 minutes recording our glass divination. When I said “there’s obviously no one here with us’ Sues camera had completely shut its self off. When I tried to switch it back on again I couldn’t even get the light to come back on. I though this was strange because I have the same camera as Sue and when my battery dies I am normally able to turn it back on for a few minutes before it cut off again.
Vigil 2
For the second vigil of the night I was again with Sue and Steve but this time we were joined by Vince (pub owner) and we were in the private living quarters (lounge and kitchen). When I went into the living room I decided to go and sit on a hardback dining chair that was to the right of the TV. I only decided to do this because I didn’t think I would be very comfortable on the leather sofas. We were all sat in there and just having a general talk. Sue asked Vince if anything had been sighted here and he told us that there used to be a gentleman that lived there who crossed over about a year ago from a massive heart attack. He told us that he had also suffered from osteoporosis and gulf war syndrome although I hadn’t picked up on any of this. Vince also told us that I had directly sat in the chair that Terry used to sit in because he wasn’t able to get up off the leather chairs. Sue had said that she was picking up light anomalies round me and asked me if I could sense him but I wasn’t able to. We decided to move into the kitchen and see if we could pick him up in there because he appeared to be moving from room to room. Vince told us that he also used to sit in a wooden chair in the corner of the kitchen. I decided to go and sit in that chair for no apparent reason. Sue and Steve had said they were getting cold draughts and sue was beginning to sense him. I decided to go and sit in the living room on my own for a period of no more than five minutes to see if I could pick him up. Unfortunately nothing.
Vigil 3
Our third and final vigil was in the skittle alley where we were joined by Julie, Brian and Suzanne (Steve’s Wife). We all sat along the wall where the radiator was as it was pretty cold in there. Again we picked up absolutely nothing. Julie did try calling out once but unfortunately nothing.
Conclusion
All in all I can say that even though this was an extremely uneventful investigation for me it was a pleasure to investigate such a nice building. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Vince and all the other people that joined us for the investigation. I would also like to wish Vince and the rest of his family all the best of luck for when they move and hopefully we will be able to join them for an investigation at their new residence.

This welcoming pub is tucked away in the old town of Shaftsbury, set in a town full of history.
My first impressions were that the building holds some dark secrets , and on the baseline tests I did sense quite a bit of residue energy . I must say not of grounded spirit, but of replays of events that have happened within the building. I sensed despair and anguish in two places, the first being in the restaurant and the second in the lounge. Apart from that the seemed happy and comforting.
No unusual readings were encountered with our equipment .
Our first vigil was in the lounge and kitchen area upstairs. The lounge seemed comfortable, but I seemed drawn to the area behind the television and the doorway to the kitchen. I sensed two energies, both female and I was given the names of Abigail and Hazel. They gave me no other information , but they did seem to not be connected . Hazel seemed to be a young girl , but both of them didn’t seem to want us to know they were there, they just seemed to settle in the background .
The kitchen seemed to hold more energy, and slight ticks were heard and a distant conversation which sounded like muffled voices . It was a definite male voice , middle aged . It sounded to me like a normal conversation of two people nattering in their kitchen, normal life !
Abbie and Bill heard a small girl’s voice coming from the connecting bedroom, which we couldn’t explain.
Our next vigil was the Skittle alley . This room was very cold, but seemed colder down the far end where the skittles are lined up. We sat quietly but despite sitting with my back against the radiator, I still felt the cold. I saw what could only be described as a figure walk up the alley stopping just before the double doors. He stood about 5’11” and gave me the name of Roger . This was different than upstairs as the man seemed “grounded” and moved randomly making us feel cold and showing us orbs.
Our last area was the restaurant area. Earlier I sensed a man pacing , then stopping by the window . He seemed in a state of depression not knowing where to turn or what to do for the best, but despite trying glass divination no verification or name was given. He gave the impression of wanting to make his presence felt but was very wrapped up I his own anguish that he maybe didn’t want to be disturbed. This was his place and we were just intruding.
It verified to me that some buildings absorb energy and run back that energy like a video tape replaying events .Everyone has their routines , which if asked what they do they couldn’t say as becomes an automatic reflux action. An interesting place which deserves an extra visit as I feel we did not see the true picture of the building. Thanks to Vince , Pat, Pat and Bill for making us so welcome.

The Fountain Inn is certainly an interesting venue for an investigation. I, for one, had not even heard of this friendly little place. After meeting up with team members and making ourselves known to Vince, the owner, we set about our usual tasks.
Vigil 1 was Julie, myself and Pat, one of our hosts. This took place in the Skittle room. On first impressions, this was not going to be very eventful. I was proved quite wrong quite quickly. At one end of the room, where the skittles are arranged, I suddenly started to feel quite dizzy, with quite a headache developing. This seems to happen quite a lot during vigils, so it was thought that it may be due to the fact I film all vigils, and maybe the camera has an affect on me. Julie decided to take the camera and see if that helped. Strangely, every time I moved towards the far end of the room, at one certain spot, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I must have walked to the same spot at least 20 times, and every time, the same feeling occurred. Yet when I moved away from the area, the feelings went from me. On talking to Pat, it appears that the spot is in direct line with both a well and the abbey. I could not attribute this to paranormal, however, as I would like to explore the possibilities of “ultra low frequency” phenomena. This is the theory that frequencies, inaudible to human ear, can affect balance and vision etc, and can have an adverse affect on the body in many ways. This could help explain my experiences in this room and it would be interesting to test the theory. However, could this explain the orbs and light anomalies captured on Julie’s camera at the same time as my experiences?
Vigil 2 was in the restaurant, with Brian, Julie, Suzanne and myself. Again along with Pat. Here we tried glass divination, but with no success. Brian did manage to sense a couple of things such as the name Agatha and he saw the room as maybe it was before it was part of the pub. Julie and Brian both felt something brush their heads and I felt a definite cold draught on my right leg. However, I was sitting next to the fireplace which maybe was emitting a draught. On investigating, however, I could not feel any such draught.
Vigil 3 was in the kitchen. Myself Ed and Pat. Here, again, nothing happened at all. Kitchens, in my opinion, are not the best places to hold a vigil, as too much noise is experienced from appliances that any other noise is hard to differentiate. This was quite disappointing as we had been told that the kitchen was the most active area.
Conclusion.
As I have said above, I cannot attribute anything that occurred as paranormal, as there are still too many avenues to explore of the “normal” nature, rather than “paranormal” Hopefully soon, the Ultra Low Frequency Detector that someone is making for us will arive to add to our growing collection of equipment.
My thanks go to Vince, Pat and everyone of our kind and generous hosts at The Fountain Inn

I'm afraid that it has been very difficult to try and write an interesting and thorough account of this investigation, when truth be told, I experienced absolutely nothing all evening! The whole investigation passed without any incident whatsoever.
For the majority of the time, I was in the same team as Alison and Abbie who both being of a very sensitive nature, seemed to pick up on a couple of things which made interesting listening and I did happen to notice quite a few 'orbs' when I began filming shortly after arriving and settling in to our first vigil area upstairs in the living room, but unfortunately that was about it!
Later on, during the vigil in the kitchen with Wayne, I even ventured out into the cellar and attempted a lone vigil in there as apparently it was reported that a young girl's voice had been heard. I called out to try and get some kind of response, but nothing happened. I felt that maybe just with one person in the area, if a spirit was present then it may decide to show itself. Wayne had also tried this himself earlier but to no avail.
It's always good when the staff of the particular location we are investigating join in and show a keen interest in what we do, and in this case it was no exception. It also proved to be very helpful as they had a good knowledge of the building and some of it's history.
For me then, a disappointing investigation, but made interesting and insightful by the friendly, knowledgeable staff.
Steve Gilbert
Doing this investigation was almost like a step back in time - as it so reminded me of the very first investigations we did at the Filly Inn and The Boot Inn.Even the place itself had a similar feel about it. Unfortunately as was the case then I cant report anything happened. The atmosphere is nothing more than a comfortable pleasant one.No ghosts but great hosts and a really cosy inn.

VIGIL 1 RESTAURANT AREA. SUE, DAVID, STEVE
This area felt very calm when we first entered Steve took some readings with his multi function meter. We sat quite for a while I videoed on my camcorder.
We then decided to do a glass divination, David opened with a protection prayer and asked if their was anyone with us, nothing happened for ages , then my camcorder turned it self off and something drained the battery which was fully charged.
Nothing else happened so we closed the table down.
VIGIL 2. PRIVATE LOUNGE AND KITCHEN. SUE, DAVID, STEVE, VINCE PLUS ONE.
We all sat in the lounge, I carried on videoing. David sat on a chair by the TV.
I kept catching light anomalies which I mentioned; Vince said who it was so we called out his name and again light anomalies where around David, this is where the person used to sit.
After a while Steve and David went into the kitchen. Vince then left to check the dogs as one of them was barking .I then joined David and Steve in the kitchen, this area felt strange, cold spots around the kitchen table and cooker area.
Light anomalies still being caught on camcorder. Vince returned to join us he mentioned I was sat where this person sat to watch TV.
I also felt another presence in the kitchen someone younger another male but could not get a name. I was very impressed with this area.
VIGIL 3. SKITTLE ALLEY. JULIE, STEVE, BRIAN, DAVID, SUZANNE AND SUE.
I did not feel anything in this area apart from the cold.
Julie asked Brian to walk down to the far end of the skittle alley and to say what he felt.
On walking down to the far end Brian felt very dizzy and had to sit down as he became light headed with pains in his chest, Wayne also felt this way on his vigil in this area.
Nothing else was felt by any of the other members only that it was very cold.
CONCLUSION.
A very good night I really enjoyed the whole evening.
Especially the lounge and kitchen. I would like to thank Vince for letting us onto his ho
Brian Ward
FIRST VIGIL: LOFT AREA SUZANNE, BRIAN, VINCE.
Now the loft area, what can I say oh I know it was a loft you know the once lots of rafters fibre glass and house hold items which we all store in the loft, very dusty as for paranormal activity I cant say there was any.
After ¾ hr we decided to call it a day. When we came down I asked Julie for health and safety reason’s not to do anymore vigils in this area.
VIGIL 2: Restaurant AREA JULIE, SUZANNE, WAYNE, BRIAN AND LADY FROM INN.
When we done the base line test I thought then this was the place to be.
As soon as I walked into this area to start the vigil , the whole room had changed in my mind’s eye I could see an old armchair on the right hand side of the fireplace by the window and on the left hand there was a old welsh dresser with odds and sods of crockery on it plates and cups act and in the middle of the room there was a dinner table and chairs.
We started to call out, I got the name Agatha we started to call this name out their was a few tapping sounds but that could have been put down to the team on their vigil upstairs but the lady of the fountain inn said the only thing in this area was the toilet and bathrooms.
So I don’t know.
A little while later I had a corner of the eye thing I could see a white dog what bread it was im not to sure it was a middle size dog.
We decided to do a glass divination and see what we could bring forward. We sat at the table I was just about to start the protection prayer when I felt someone touch the back of my head leaving the back of my head with a pins and needle feeling, I looked around there was no one by me, Julie said she had taken a picture at the same time and there was an orb over my head now this I would like to see all very interesting.
Not a lot in fact nothing came out of the glass divination half way through sitting at the table I felt a dog brush past my right leg moving the material of my jeans it felt just like my own dog brushing past my leg at home.
All these experiences I found very interesting and would like to have spent longer in this area.
LAST VIGIL OF THE NIGHT. SKITTLE ALLEY. JULIE, SUE, SUZANNE, STEVE, DAVID, BRIAN.
There was only one thing in this area and that was when Julie asked me to walk the length of the skittle alley which I did about ¾ of the way down I started to feel very dizzy to the stage where I had to sit down before I feel down, Julie said that Wayne had felt the same feeling dizzy and had pains in his chest and arm this I must confirm.
Now apparently there is a well out side and lay lines running through this area after reading about this phenomenon I think this could play a big part in all paranormal activity in this area.
CONCLUSION.
This inn I found very atmospheric especially the restaurant area the stories and history of the fountain inn I found all very interesting.
