The History of Fort Widley

Several generations of Portsmouth people have given the nickname "Palmerston's Folly" to the Victorian forts on Portsdown Hill. The forts on the crest of the hill overlooking the town and harbour, face inland and to some people look the wrong way. The development of new armaments plus the perceived threat of invasion led Prime Minster, Lord Palmerston to commission a revue and implement new defences to strengthen Portsmouth and the surrounding area. If there were an attack on Portsmouth from the north, none of the existing fortifications would be able to protect the dockyard and harbour against bombardment from Portsdown Hill.

The Royal Commission received its instruction in August 1859, that it should begin work by considering the defence of Portsmouth. The report was submitted in 1860, the recommendations were:
1. To prevent the enemy landing on the Isle of Wight
2. Protection of the anchorage at Spithead
3. Defence of the needles passage
4. Protection of the harbour mouth
5. Land defences from the north

These were divided between the Gosport defences and the hill forts.

The War Department purchased the necessary acreage along Portsdown Hill from the Lord of the Manor. Approximately 900 acres were taken over completely and clearance rights were obtained for another 1000 acres.

The Royal Engineers were responsible for the basic design of the hill forts, with Colonel, later Lieutenant General, Sir W. R. Drummond Jervois in charge. The design was that they should be surrounded by a deep ditch on the west, north and east sides. Access being gained from ramps down to the bottom of the ditches from the fort entrances on the south side at the back of the fort. There was also a dry moat with varied depth from 40 - 60 feet and width from 30 - 70 feet around the five forts.

The escarp is about 10 - 15 feet thick backed by earthwork and surmounted by a rampart. The platforms on the inner side of the rampart were for additional guns firing over the parapet. On the south side, two-storey accommodation was living quarters for about 250 men; there was also married quarters for twelve soldiers.

There were single storey rooms and a stable on either side of the barrack block. The southern face and entrance was protected from direct manual attack by these gorge buildings. The walls had loopholes for rifle fire. Underground tunnels went from the barrack block to the caponiers in the moat. The barrack block walls were 4 - 5 feet thick with a thick reinforced concrete roof

The five forts were Fort Widley, Fort Purbrook, Fort Wallington, Fort Southwick and Fort Nelson.

Construction of Fort Widley commenced in 1861 and was completed in 1870 at a cost of £93,980. It is six sided in trace and is symmetrical about a north south axis. It is identical to Fort Southwick, apart from one small deviation. The east and west dry ditches are enfiladed by small two storey demi caponiers whilst the main north ditch is covered by a full caponier. The return angles of the gorge ditch and protected by small musketry galleries.

A central spiral stair from the parade ground gives access to the four main tunnels running of it radially. These lead to the barrack block and caponiers. The main magazine is located half way along the tunnel to the barrack block on the West Side. There is a semi circular tunnel bypassing the main magazine. The magazine was constructed as a single barrel vaulted room, 57' X 27', for the storage of 2,500 barrels of powder. It was later subdivided into two rooms for shells and cartridges. A narrow passage runs round three sides of the magazine, there would originally have been glazed apertures in the magazine walls where oil lamps would have been placed for lighting the magazine. Further stairs from the parade ground lead to two mortar batteries and chemin de ronde.

The fort was disarmed in 1907 but remained in military hands being used as an army barracks for the Royal Artillery until 1939. During WW2 the fort saw a variety of uses; from 1940 it served as an 'Action Post, Fire' and in 1941 it housed a Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal Unit. From 1942 it was used briefly to house POWs and from 1943 it was used as an alternative control centre for Southwick House (HMS Dryad).

On 19 February 1952, the Civil Defence Committee of Portsmouth Borough Council proposed the construction of a new main and group control for the Borough to be used in the event of a nuclear attack; it was decided this should be established at Fort Widley.

It was suggested that the main underground magazine and the ground floor of the barrack block should be adapted. Work on the conversion started in 1953 when further modifications were made to the main magazine and the Borough Control was officially opened by General Sir Sidney Kirkman, Director General of Civil Defence, in January 1955. It continued to perform this function until the end of the cold war and the Portsmouth District Council Emergency Centre, as it was by then know, finally closed in 1992.

The fort was bought by Portsmouth City Council in 1972 and some restoration has been undertaken and it is occasionally open at weekends for public tours. Private tours can be arranged at other times by appointment. The area surrounding it is designated as a conservation and study area.

Fort Widley (and Fort Purbrook) are now administered by the Peter Ashley Activity Centre and Fort Widley houses The Fort Widley Equestrian Centre including a licensed riding school and pony care and saddle club with fully qualified instructors.

The Ghosts of Fort Widley

It is in the underground chambers of the fort that most of the Paranormal activity has been reported. Whispered voices, EVP, and physical activity have all been reported here.

Many people that visit the fort express high levels of anxiety and sudden oppressive feelings in certain areas. Women feel this the most in the East tunnel where there has been phenomena of women having their behind grabbed or touched in some way.

Equipment malfunction and sudden battery drain is also very common at the fort. I know this is something our group suffered with on our first investigation of the fort.

Voices and people calling out in the darkness of the tunnels has scared guests and staff

Alike and phantom footsteps have been heard following people down corridors. When the people have stopped to listen the footsteps have continued proving that it was not their own footsteps they could hear.

Personal Reports

West Tunnel
This was the first room/tunnel we attended so it was still light outside. As soon as I walked in a saw a white fast moving shape of a young man run in front of the windows. He was about 17 years old and about 5ft 11 inches tall. I sensed we were not alone in the room but it wasn't threatening. Amanda and Maria called out and I was given the name Capt. Jim Leven. Also the number 11 and he kept showing me his house in Old Portsmouth that’s by water and a green area and the number 11. He was a local man that wasn't captain for long. His energy was very weak and he faded away after that, there was some significance about him showing me his house but he faded before I got the information.

North Tunnel
Freezing cold in this room, colder than the previous room. I sensed a boy deafened by an explosion in this room and the ceiling falling in and the wall with the windows blowing out. I also got the initials CD. Fairly quiet in this room. I sensed others but they seemed reluctant to come forward.

East Tunnel
Nasty feeling in this tunnel. I saw lots of men sat along the sides of the tunnel and one man, a ringleader. I saw images of rape and assault and he hated woman. I saw group orgies etc but the woman were not willing victims and were blindfolded. Pretty shocking stuff!! The team were not afraid of this man and we told him so. His energy seemed to back off as he's more interested in frightened people. He preys on their fear! NOT a place for a lone vigil though as I think he'd come forward. He's definitely grab breasts, bottoms etc...

Room 12
I loved this room. I immediately sensed a Colonel Jefferson from WW2 to my right. He was lovely and very handsome. I felt he was sitting next to me. If you check out Sandy’s photo of the orb in this room the orb is to my right as I described. He told me about an plane crash on the site and how a mistake was made that led to this crash and kept showing me a filing cabinet as if to show me proof! Most of the team members wanted to sing 1940's American songs that you'd dance to!

Room 1
This was also the team room and hub. Felt very sleepy in here as if I should be in bed. I think the room was used as a rest room and I saw cinema type images of slide shows and cinematic films running on an old fashioned reel...1950's and 60's, as if people watched films in that room. I do feel that at some stage in this rooms history it would have had beds in it. Very relaxing and calm.

Fort Widley was a little disappointing for me as I was sure we'd get more that we did. I also felt that another investigative team had been there recently that has done some kind of clearing work and moved a lot of the spirits on. Although not all have crossed over I think there would have been more action before this clearing. I'd be interested to find out. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way as it's positive when spirits go home and into to the light so to speak, but for such an old place which masses of history I'm surprised at the lack of encounters.

Sandy Rutter

Again it was impressive, even in daylight as it was last time we arrived there. We arrived at the Fort and met up with the others then we all went through the gate. I gave the people who were not at our previous investigation the guided tour of the fort. It wasn't too dark so they could see lots of the fort in daylight which was good. However it was spooky as ever and had a fantastic atmosphere.

Vigil 1
The West tunnel

We did the normal thing and took a pictures first. Then we called out but nothing really happened. Myself and Marie decided to go halfway up the tunnel. We called out but nothing so I asked if Marie was OK as she was a bit quiet and she said she was feeling a bit angry and agitated. We decided to move a bit further up and she felt OK. We called out again hoping that something would happen but it never did so we decided to rejoin the rest of the group. The rest of the team were on the top of the Fort outside. After a short while we all came back in. We all went to a little room on the second floor of the tunnel. Amanda called out but to no avail. Maria asked if one of the men call out so I did. Then Maria suggested for me to call him Sir as that what Maria picked up. At the same time Alison picked up Captain then Alison got a name Leven. I had my dictaphone on and I think I picked up something on there like laughing and voices that was not any of us (you can hear whispering on the dictaphone but I cant make out the words). Then Alison got the name Jim and at the same time Amanda got the name James. Maria was getting the name Peter. All in all a good start.

Vigil 2
The North and East Tunnels

The girls decided to go down the East tunnel by themselves (they like to be brave little soldiers) so Myself and Mark went down the North tunnel taking pictures. I got a few light anomalies so we stayed there for a bit and then rejoined the girls in the East tunnel. The girls was getting some sort of reaction from something. We established it was a man who wanted to touch the girls. The girls were getting threatened by this person so we left the east tunnel and we all went down the north tunnel. We took a few pictures and then we settled down. I was filming we tried table tipping as there was a table there and Alison saw someone over at the far corner. I stood over there then we decided to move the table over there. Maria, Amanda, Alison, Marie, Gill, Sarah and Marion were around the table and I was filming the whole thing but the table didn't really move. During the experiment Sarah moved away from the table as something touched her head. Unfortunately then it was time to leave.

Vigil 3
Team room and Control room

We took a few pictures and there was a Ouija board set up on the table so some of the girls had a séance. Then we went into the Control room again, we took a few pictures and Alison came up with a Colonel who was a gentleman who was standing beside her.

Vigil 4
East Tunnel and North Tunnel

We all went down the north tunnel first and we went up the stairs. We took a few pictures and we called out. We heard a bang as if some one threw something but there was nothing about. Then we all went back to the top and the others decided to stay at the top where the metal staircase. I decided to go down the East tunnel by myself. I stayed there for about fifteen minutes before I ran back, it was horrible, I genuinely thought I was being chased by something as I was getting shivers all over my body it was scary.

All in all another fantastic night, cant wait another return visit, thanks Julie for booking this fort again it was magic!

Maria Street

Having done this before I’d like to say that I had a little idea of what to expect from this location, but of course, this is never the case. It doesn’t follow that a quiet night in a place means it will always be quiet; they will only play when they want to!

I travelled down with Marie and we arrived at 8.45pm. I was in team 2 with Amanda, Alison, Mark B, Gill, Marion, Sarah, Sandy and Marie. For our first vigil we set off for the West Tunnel. One of the first things to greet us was the smell of wood smoke, so being the intrepid investigators we are, we tried to find the source of the smell. We ended up outside the fort but the smell could not be traced to anywhere definite. It felt very calm outside and Amanda felt drawn to some steps but could not say why. We came back indoors and settled down once more for our vigil. Amanda was stood with her back to the fireplace and after a while asked Alison to swap places with her as she was feeling something there. Alison felt a change in the atmosphere and Amanda said that she also felt it was warm in this place, in spite of being close to the open window. Alison soon became aware of a tall gentleman and she felt he had suffered in an explosion which had occurred on the upper floors. I got the name of Frank in my head. We then decided to head upstairs to investigate further. The EMF showed no strange readings and the temperature remained at an ambient 12c. We stood around and waited to soak up the atmosphere. Alison sensed a spirit just outside of our area but he would not come any closer. Sandy called out but could get no response, so I asked him to address the spirit as Sir, as I had the impression this was a man of higher rank. Alison agreed, saying she felt the man was a Captain and his name was Jim. Amanda then said she had just got the name of James in her head. Alison also got the word Leven or Eleven. Could Leven have been his surname? I was getting the name of Peter and it was quite persistent, but I don’t know where the name belonged. I felt this was a gentleman who was concerned with the presence of ladies in this vicinity as he felt it was too dangerous an environment for them. Alison then felt that he was showing her his house and I immediately got the impression of a big white house. I asked her if the house she was being shown was white and she confirmed that it was.

A quick break followed and it was off to the next vigil. We made our way to the East tunnel. We decided to split the team. Sandy and Mark stayed near the entrance and the rest of us (all females) made our way to the far end of the tunnel. Half way down, Alison felt we should all be on our guard as she felt a negative presence. Undeterred, we all strode purposefully on and reached the end of the tunnel. Amanda, Alison and I stayed by the door, whilst the others went through the door, nearer to the far end. We called out but could get no response. The story is that a female was grabbed inappropriately by a male spirit down this tunnel, so Amanda tried to get him to do the same, but to no avail. Alison felt that women were brought down to this tunnel and were raped and murdered there. We all moved further up the tunnel and the men joined us. Nothing more happened so we made our way to the North tunnel. We attempted a table tipping experiment but could get no results.

Another break, then on to the control rooms. We settled in Room 12 and after a few minutes I felt the impression of GI’s having been in this room on a regular basis. As this was a control room, I would have imagined it to be predominantly a female environment and they would have come in here to impress the ladies and to flirt a little. Amanda asked them to impress us and I immediately got the impression that they were feeding us chocolate. That’s certainly enough to impress me in this world! The room was a jolly one and we certainly didn’t feel anything negative in here. We did, however, hear noises from above, like somebody was moving furniture. The only person who was sat upstairs was Marion who was resting, but on later investigation she told us that she had been sat still the whole time. We made our way to the Team Room where Marion was, and it was interesting that nobody knew what this room had once been used for. We tried a glass divination but there was no response. All I could feel was that this was a very peaceful room and a very calm room. We did hear a noise come from a room with a locked door, but it is possible there could have been some kind of machinery behind the door. Without being able to check, it is impossible to know. Amanda had the impression of a young man aged about 17. He was very shy and would not come forward.

For our last vigil, we went back to the North Tunnel and we tried the upper floors this time. We called out but this proved to be quiet so we headed back downstairs to the centre where the stairway was. Alison felt the presence of a male spirit on the stairs and she could see lights there. It was very quiet after this and we made our way back to the team room to pack up. I really enjoyed my evening here and I’d like to thank Julie for asking me along and for organising it. It takes a lot of work to organise an investigation and we are very lucky to get as many as we do. I would also like to thank our hosts for allowing us the run of the place. That is a real honour and we really appreciate being trusted like that. Finally thanks to my team. You weren’t expecting me that night but we all pulled together and got on with the job. You were a pleasure to work with.

Emma Curtis

It was very unfortunate that I did not make the last visit to fort widely, so when the chance came round again I was thrilled to be going.

When the time came it was once again unfortunate that I was unwell from a operation five days earlier but the team made it possible for me to attend and be allowed to leave before it finished, I also had broke my middle finger on my right hand two weeks previously so was unable to take notes, so I have to decided to write an short overall account of my experience while I was there.

When I arrived I imagined it to be a lot different, I just presumed “Fort” in being stone castle like buildings but looked more like the entrance to a farm especially with stables in corner and the horses leaning over the doors looking out.

Once in side and settled we went on a quick tour to familiarise our selves with where we were investigating, the entrance to the tunnels was a door with a metal gate that could also be shut almost like a side gate but beyond that was very long dark tunnels and passages leading all over the place, quite remarkable that all those tunnels were hidden behind that one door.

Out of the whole time I was there I have one incident that sticks in my mind and that’s while in vigil one, the east and north tunnels. Rachael, Simon and I went in to this little room off to the side of where the others were, it had a small window looking out and a cubby hole in corner of room, while Rachael was asking out this very strong smell of what I would say is like sulphur from a burning match which got stronger and stronger, no one was out side and no one inside was burning matches. I find this a bit strange to explain as I was not the only person to smell it, it eventually disappeared and we moved on. A whistling was heard occasionally from up the tunnels but was hard to tell if it was not someone from other team and sound was just travelling.

I can’t say that I myself have anymore to report for the rest of the time I was there as although I enjoyed myself and found it very interesting the paranormal activities were just not happening for me that night.

Thanks to those who gave permission for us to investigate Fort Widely.

Sarah Couper

Our first vigil – West tunnel.
Downstairs, felt nothing here but I was concentrating on filming. Other members of the team were apparently picking things up but I caught nothing on film or on digital camera. Sandy tried to capture some evp.
Upstairs and outside – outside kept seeing flashes though no one was sing their cameras. Inside upstairs – again members of the team were picking up on things. Again I got nothing here. However, I did capture possible orbs upstairs on one downstairs on the way out.

Vigil 2 First floor East Tunnel.
Maria and Alison could feel negative energy, but I felt ok. Marion Gill Marie and I went through to the rooms at the end of the tunnel. We called out but got no replies or acknowledgements. Possible orbs on still camera. Marie joined the group in the tunnel. Marion Gill and I went upstairs and looked around. Again nothing unusual felt. I did capture orbs in the stair well.
Joined the others in the tunnel we called out here. Three people in the team were sensing/feeling stuff but the rest of us seemed fine.

Vigil 3 North tunnel.
Went to rooms at the end. Marin and I went upstairs and looked around then went to join the rest of the group in the lower rooms. In the first section I felt like I wanted t party. We tried table tipping but no success. Moved into the 2nd section and tried table tipping here. I was getting colder and colder here and when we called out I kept getting an image of my head being smashed on the table. I had to leave the table. I stood in line with the entrance and felt like someone was about to walk down the corridor.

Vigil 4 Communications Rooms.
Again other members of the team were sensing stuff in the end room. I felt a bit flat.
In the first rooms we tried calling out and heard footsteps walking across the floor above us. Marion had not come down with us and we thought it might have been her. However, when we joined her she confirmed that she had not moved.
Team room – we tried the Ouija board but nothing happened. Heard taps like a foot tapping on the floor. Otherwise I was quiet in here.

Vigil 5
Went back to the north tunnel. I was glad we werent going into the ground floor rooms. Went upstairs here and called out. A stone sounded like it was thrown downstairs but we couldn’t be sure it hadn’t been one of us that accidentally kicked it. We went to the centre of the tunnels and tried calling out here, but nothing again.
All in all I wasn’t that impressed with fort widely, although felt uncomfortable in the north tunnel I was fine everywhere else, and I was disappointed that I was not sensing or picking up on anything that other team members were.

Introduction
I was very much looking forward to this location as I had visited this location on a previous occasion and I got some very promising results I could only hope for the same responses as before!
I arrived with Maria around 8.45 ready to start the first vigil.

Vigil 1 – West Tunnel
We got to the bottom of the tunnel and stood in that room for a while but I did not pick up on anything unusual. Sandy and I decided to walk back down the tunnel and stood in the dark calling out, after about 10 minutes I felt very threatened but that feeling subsided. We walked a bit further down and called out but got nothing.
We then joined the others and went upstairs and outside where we had a walk around and came back inside and back downstairs and stood in one of the rooms. We took turns calling out I heard nothing and saw nothing unusual.
Alison was picking up a Captain who she thought was called Leven and at one point felt as though the atmosphere around her had changed; when I walked over to her I felt short of breath and felt my chest tighten.

Vigil 2 – East and North Tunnels
We started in the East Tunnel where there was supposed to be a man that does not like women. A few of us went through the door at the bottom of the tunnel and called out but nothing happened.
We then joined Maria and Amanda and called out to the man who supposedly haunts this area but got no response.

There was a chair in the tunnel, we carried it down to halfway down the tunnel and I sat on it to see if we would get a response as it was supposed to be his chair. I caught an orb on the camcorder going from where Amanda was standing down through the middle of the group.

We then went to the North Tunnel and went to the area at the bottom of the tunnel and we decided to try table tipping. We sat around the table and called out for the spirit to try and move the table but there was no movement. Alison suggested we move the table to another area as she sensed a presence in that area. We moved the table to that area, called out but again we got no response.

Vigil 3 – Control rooms and lecture room 1
We started in the control room, called out but got no response. Alison sensed there was a G.I present, very handsome and wondering what on earth we were doing!
We all heard footsteps coming from upstairs where Marion was located as she did not join us downstairs. When we returned to the team room we asked Marion if she had been walking around and she said she hadn’t.

We then went to lecture room 1 which was also our team room. We decided to try the Ouija board and a glass divination but got no response from either, however, there was a very calming atmosphere in this location which might have explained the lack of response.

Vigil 4 – North Tunnel revisited
We tried calling out but got no responses, after a while we decided to go to the middle section where the tunnels meet and do a vigil there.
Unfortunately, nothing unusual was experienced here.

Conclusion

It was great being able to re-visit this location as the atmosphere is wonderful. The best vigil for me was the East Tunnel as there is something about the atmosphere down there that really freaks me out! Don’t visit alone!

Amanda Horley

Having been to Fort Widley on the previous investigation, I was looking forward to the return visit as it is a very atmospheric place. Investigating in the summer meant that when we arrived we were able to do a walk round in daylight and were able to get a better idea of the surroundings to the Fort.

We split into two larger teams for this investigation, and our team tackled the West Tunnels first. We started out on the ground floor level and I was drawn to one of the fireplaces. When I stood in front of it, the back of my legs and my hands felt very warm. I checked the chimney, and that had been blocked off so there was no draft coming in from there. Also, I felt that there was someone there who was three inches or so taller than me, but I couldn’t pick up anything else about him. After a time we moved up to the higher lever and could smell wood smoke, which hadn’t been present on the walk round. We had been told that there are sometimes bonfires, but over by the North and East tunnels, so we went outside to check. Despite checking all around there were no obvious bonfires. There were several sets of steps leading up to top edge of the moat and one set in particular attracted my attention. Despite the fact that they didn’t look particularly safe, I felt that I had to climb them, and felt that the man from downstairs was with us. Unfortunately I still couldn’t pick up any more about him. We went back inside the upper levels and without making a conscious decision about it all stood in a circle around a chair in one of the rooms. Several people felt that there was a man present in the room (not the one from earlier) and at the same time as Alison came up with the name Jim, I was getting the name James. Interestingly the smell of wood smoke had now gone.

Our second vigil was in the East Tunnel. Some of us were aware of the stories relating to this tunnel, so we asked Mark and Sandy to remain at the mouth of the tunnel for a little while whilst the ladies went down to the end. I didn’t sense anything myself, and after a time Mark and Sandy came down to join us. For me this was a very quiet vigil. We moved in into the ground floor area of the North Tunnel, but unlike the previous investigation, or earlier this evening in West Tunnel, there was no smell of wood smoke at all. We tried table tipping but nothing happened, although I did feel that there was someone with us, and at one point I felt that they were standing behind me.

Our third vigil was in the Control room and it was a much more light hearted atmosphere than our earlier vigils. One or two people were picking up on American GI’s and when we were asked if any particular music came to mind, several people including me thought of Glen Miller, or Glen Miller tunes. Whilst we were stood in the control room, we heard footsteps either in the next room or out in the corridor. Marion had remained upstairs in the team room, so we did wonder if she could have come downstairs to the toilets. We moved into the second room and very clearly heard footsteps above us in the team room. We went back upstairs and Marion assured us that she had been sitting down the whole time, and had not been moving around. Also, she had heard no footsteps herself. We then tried a glass divination in the team room, but got no movement. I sensed a young soldier, in his teens. He would have been shy around women. I went and stood by the window overlooking the harbour and I felt that he came from Portsmouth, and died in France.

Our final vigil was in the upper area of the North Tunnel and the Central Stairwell, both of which were quiet for me.

My experiences this time were very different to the previous investigation, with very little occurring on both investigations which in itself I find quite interesting. Definitely a venue that merits further investigation.
