Introduction

When we heard we were able to investigate this wonderful pub we were very excited, as it has never been investigated by a paranormal team before. The history is sketchy but it has had many previous uses including being a riding school, a private residence and also obviously a bed and breakfast public house.

The night was very interesting, as some teams seemed to experience activity even if it was only slight and others had little or no activity to report at all. This is good for the team because to be quite honest if we went to every location and had activity one - we would start to get complacent and two - it shows we do not 'make' things happen. Notes were not taken on this report because teams were split down into smaller areas however each investigator was asked to make personal notes so they could write more descriptive personal reports to make up for the lack of notes. A point to note though, each team did have a dictaphone so if anything really special happened the event details could be recorded. The dictaphones were not used to any great extent but again it is interesting to note that when they were used members had difficulty getting them to work even though they are the same dictaphones we have used on countless investigations so knowing how to use them was not the issue.

Some of us do know the history to this building however I would really like the team to return as I think there could be better results now it has been investigated once, so I will not be putting them on this report.

Personal Reports

The Crows Nest is a pub I have past many times and yet never really stopped to notice the name let alone to go inside. What a shame I hadn't as it is a wonderful pub both inside and out. When Rachel, Simon and I arrived we met the rest of the team outside and I noticed everyone was commenting on how big it was, I think everyone was expecting a pokey little place. We were treated to supper by our hosts (thank you very much for your hospitality) and then we were ready to set off on vigils.

My first vigil was with Simon and Paul in Cabin 4 (one of the guestrooms). When we first went in this room had a nice atmosphere and I felt very comfortable in here. After a while I got the name Sarah and so I kept it quiet and asked anyone if they had any names. Paul said he got the name Sarah and so I was interested as there was no way he could have known that I also got this name. Both Paul and I sensed a shy6 Victorian girl who seemed to be hanging around but did not want to communicate with us much. We felt that she thought she was not allowed to and was in fact hovering outside of the room for a lot of the vigil as we could hear lots of creaks outside the door and gentle footsteps. Paul and Simon both saw lights that seemed to be flashing around the mirror, unfortunately I did not see these. There were also a couple of light anomalies caught on camcorder when we were calling out. Very suddenly about half way through the vigil all three of us felt the atmosphere change dramatically and all of us had the sensation of "someone walking over our graves" and all of us got goosebumps at the same time. Simon was also sure he could see something or at least the light changing in the corner of the room behind me and before he said this I did get the feeling of not wanting to turn around as it felt like there was a man in dark clothes behind me. The room seemed to them drop in temperature and all of us felt the cold. This was unusual as 1) it was a very warm night and 2) the temp gun was not picking up any drop in temperature.

My second vigil was in the bar area downstairs with Simon, Paul, Sandy, Jon, Di & Gill. We spread ourselves out around the pub. Di, Gill and I went to the far end of the area by the cellar and the men remained around the large table at the other end. I was interested to see if the splitting up of the sexes would mean anything particular was picked up on. Di could smell dog again (which she had been smelling throughout the night) and there were a lot of light anomalies caught on cameras but I did not feel this area was particularly active. That was until Di called out for a man that she could sense and asked that he make himself known to someone or some of us. I was sat on one of the leather sofas and all the time I could see in the dim light Sandy and Simon at the table to my left. Suddenly I looked to my left expecting to see them but it was like a figure in a black coat was stood to the side of me blocking my view as I could no longer see the men at the table. This made me jump and I covered my eyes, when I looked back I could see them again and the strange shape had gone. I don't know if this was a trick of the light or my eyes adjusting in the dim light or indeed a spirit stood blocking my view. After a little while Simon and I think it was Paul could see a dark shadow / shape at the bar in front of me. They described it like someone was sitting on the stool or stood close to the bar. They directed me to the area and I stood where they could the shape to see if I could feel anything. I did get goosebumps and I also felt a light breeze over my arms but nothing conclusive as it could easily be a draught from somewhere. We tried glass divination and seemed to pick up on Sarah but although the glass was moving it was pretty weak and did not confirm much at all.

The next vigil was upstairs in the landlady's lounge with Paul. Simon stayed out on the landing area by the stairs. Paul and I felt very relaxed in this room and could not sense or feel much at all. We could hear what we thought was Simon outside the door but when we checked it was not him. He could also see lights flashing from inside the lounge but it was not us, which he found out when he came to check. We could also see the light changing under the door like someone was stood out there but again when we checked Simon was no where near. We decided to call out for Sarah. We could not feel anything in the room and so I called out that if she was around could she affect Simon. What was happening next was fascinating. I was whispering when calling out and so there is no way Simon could have heard me but I was saying things like can you show yourself as a light to Simon. Next we would hear Simon from the landing saying "Thank you can you show me that light again". This carried on and about 4 times we heard Simon apparently get what we had asked Sarah to do. In this room towards the end I remember asking Paul if he thought this building could have been used for schooling. I did not mean an actual school but I felt schooling of some sort had been done here with very well dressed children who obviously came from a good wealthy background.

Our next vigil was back downstairs. Glass divination was attempted but nothing came through at all and the glass remained still. Di and I had a theory that we were talking about on the night and that is, if this place has never been investigated before (and we know it hasn't) then maybe our slight activity was any spirits in the building, way of trying to get through but maybe they were not sure how to talk to us. I think of any of the places we have been this is a must for a return as I think there is a lot more to get.

Thank you so much to the landlady and the staff who made our visit so enjoyable.

VIGIL 1.
Upstairs-Cabin 4. - Julie, Simon & myself.
During this vigil, Julie and myself became aware of a young Victorian girl who appeared to be rather shy in coming forward, and indeed seemed to be hovering around outside the door before we sensed her come into the room, where when we began to feel her presence closer to us.
We called out to her and asked her to give us her name, whereby myself and Julie both had the name SARAH come into our heads.
During this time, Simon and myself saw a couple of distinct flashes, that appeared to be emanating from the mirror in the corner.
Also during this time, Julie caught many Light anomalies on the video camera, and there were various creaks around the room.

VIGIL 2.
Downstairs Bar area.
During this vigil we split into two groups - one at either end of the long room.
At the end where the drinks store was, the door to this room seemed to rattle on and off as if it was being pushed from the other side. There also appeared to be the sound of distant voices coming from the other side.
At the other end of the room a glass divination was taking place, where there didn't seem to be much of a response until the name Sarah was mentioned. Had she followed us downstairs?
At some point during this vigil Julie sat down and realised that her view of the room had been blocked off by someone standing in front of her in the dim light. At first she thought that one of us had come over and stood in front of her.. but then realised that we were all over the other side of the room, and there was no one any where near her...

VIGIL 3.
Back upstairs
for this part of the investigation, myself Julie and Simon found ourselves in and around the area of the upstairs lounge, where myself and Julie felt little activity in the actual room.
However, from where we sat inside this room, we observed many lights and shadows appearing and moving under the bottom of the door to this room, which appeared to indicate a presence hovering on the other side.
At first we assumed it was Simon, who had decided to position himself in the hallway outside, although when we went to the door to check this.. or called out to check his presence, we found out that he had moved away to another area, and had in fact been away for the previous 10 minutes, during which time we felt we had observed the movements outside the door.

For the last 20 minutes of the investigation a group of us tried one last session of glass divining in the downstairs bar area. However, either we were all too tired by this point, or any spirits that may or may not have been present had had enough, and gone off to bed, as we had no response whatsoever during this last session. As I have often said, this is actually quite encouraging when this happens sometimes, as I think it shows that when things do not happen for us, and we getting no response at all, we do not "make things happen" - knowingly, or otherwise.

The crow's nest in Bursledon was a lovely site for me. We were made very welcome by Kerry and her staff, and were treated to a lovely meal before our vigil. The pub itself was for me spiritually, a very lively but calm atmosphere. There was at no time any sort of bad feelings or bad vibes whatsoever. The building was over four levels but unfortunately we could not gain access to the lower level and to one of the rooms, but hopefully we will be able to cover these on another date.

First vigil. I had drawn the short straw and was partnered with Sandy (not really mate), and we were given room 3 on the third level. It wasn't long before we were joined by a couple of orbs, and then a third, but after this the room went decidedly quiet. Although it was a quiet room I was drawn to a chair in the corner and decided to sit in it to see if I could get any impressions from it. Things were still quiet until sandy noticed that behind me the door moved, I in turn had a look and noticed that indeed it had moved a little. Sandy also took a picture with me in it and there seemed to be an aura around me. There were no other sightings and nothing was heard.

After the first vigil we had a quick break and then started our downstairs vigil. Whilst we were sat in the bar quite a few things started to happen. Simon saw a shape by the bar and I too was aware of the same presence and at a later stage I took a photo of the same area and caught a rather large orb in the same spot that Simon had seen the shape. Julie was also spooked by a presence in the bar area that seemed to be stood next to her, maybe the same spirit?

We decided to have a go with a glass, so Di, Julie, Gill, and me sat in the circle and it wasn't long before we drew on the spirit of a young girl called Sarah who was 13 years old. We think that maybe she was in service to the house at some stage. She was seemingly having trouble moving the glass bless her, but she informed us that at the stage of the sitting there were four spirits with us in the room but they did not seem to want to speak with us. Earlier in the evening, Di could smell a dog, and when she asked Sarah if there was a dog with her she confirmed that there was. A couple of other names came through, Clive to Paul and Adam to me and there were a couple of others that escape me but like I said none seem to be forthcoming.

While we were waiting for the next vigils Simon and myself had a quick wander into the cellar, which was very small and quite closed in, but as before, the area gave up nothing and seemed very calm.

Sandy and I were given the laundry room and unfortunately sandy had problems with his camera so it left us with just the one. This turned out to be a shame as I was getting a lot of orbs in the room. We were asking out for something to happen and although we had no tapping or noise the orbs seemed to be responding to our calls. On a couple of occasions I asked spirit to come toward me and they duly responded and I have this on camera as evidence. I took some photo's and later found that they contained a number of orbs, and one of Sandy in which there was a very large orb by his shoulders, this after he complained that he was freezing. I asked out a few questions and when I asked if the spirit I felt that was with us was a girl (possibly Sarah), there was a big flash by the door but we will have to investigate this further. The vigil ended too soon and it was time to go but as we were going down the stairway I took a few pictures and got some great orbs.

All the time that we were at the vigil I felt the presence of a child of around about 5 years old, but unfortunately it wouldn't come forward, but I feel that this child may be quite active in the pub by just being inquisitive and I think that he or she has been seen in the past.

To finish off a few of us got together to have a go with the glass but unfortunately we had no success, such a shame.

All in all I was very happy with this vigil and I hope that we return there one day as I feel that there is a lot more that we can learn about the Crow's Nest. Thanks all for a lovely evening.

I had passed this particular pub on many an occasion but have never really noticed it. When Dan first mentioned that he had secured us an investigation there, I had to ask him where it was. It was actually a lot closer to home than I had thought so I was pleasantly surprised. On the pre investigation visit, the landlady was very friendly and interested in what we did, which is always a bonus!

On the night, we all met outside for a chat and a soft drink. The biggest observation was that people didn't realise how big the pub was. Perched at the top of a busy road and on a hill, surrounded by trees, it is very easy to just give it a passing glance as you whiz by at 40mph and not give it the recognition it deserves.

At just after midnight, we all settled down for a lovely chilli supper, before the night's events. It was nice for us all to sit as a group and have a chance to catch up with everyone, and not just the odd few.

Very soon it was time to start and I was with Dan, Rachel, Mark, Emma, Eileen, the landlady and her guest. We started downstairs and tried calling out. I felt drawn to the far end of the pub, so walked down there. Rachel followed with the camcorder. I felt my left legs go really cold and Rachel caught a flashing light around me. Nothing more really happened so we rejoined the others and tried glass divination. Nothing really happened here either although I got the name, James and Mark got the name Peter. We also tried table tipping and felt the table pulsate, but the movement was so slight that we couldn't be sure whether this was the pulse in our fingertips that we were feeling.

Our next vigil was upstairs and we split into two groups. I went with Kerry, Dan and Emma into one of the letting rooms, whilst Rachel took the others into the laundry room. Our room was very quiet so we progressed into the bathroom. We could hear a few taps but they were all out in the corridor, so we made our way out there. We kept noticing flashes of light and wondered if it was the team downstairs taking a lot of photos. The landlady assured us however that light could not filter through from downstairs to the upstairs landing. We also kept hearing noises from the upper floor but we knew that there was nobody up there. At one point we heard what sounded like somebody stumbling over a chair but when asking Julie later if this had happened to somebody in her group, the answer was 'no'. She also assured us that nobody had taken a lot of photographs. Very interesting. The time was soon up so we went downstairs to join the others. However, they were not ready, so, I went down into the cellars with Rachel, Eileen, Mark, Emma and the landlady's guest. This was also very quiet.

Our next vigil was back downstairs and a glass experiment proved a little more successful than the last one, seemingly being in touch with a young boy, but still not very forthcoming. We did, however, notice a very cold breeze. We could not work out where it was coming from. There was an extractor fan above our heads and Emma put her hand next to it but it was emitting no draught at all.

At the end of the evening the two groups joined together for one last séance. This, though, was very quiet also.

All in all a very enjoyable night, albeit a very quiet one. I'd like to thank the landlady for having us and for her, and her guest's, very open minds.

Di Moore

On arriving at the Crows Nest we sat outside until all the customers left, then we went inside and sat for a while. On doing this I had the distinct smell of a dog. I wanted to say Alsation.

We had supper of Chilli, which the landlady did for us all, thank you Kerry, now to start.

Vigil 1 Upstairs.
Gill and I were in Cabin 1. In this room there was a washing machine and tumble drier which was off except for a red light on the washer, two single beds a dresser and chest of drawers. We sat in silence for a while then called out to spirit. We heard a few creaks coming from the chest which seemed to reply to our questions and I thought I saw something go across the red light on the washing machine as one minute I could see the light and the next in a flash it wasn't there. The open door kept me busy as I could not keep my eyes of it. The name Elizabeth came into my mind and a cold breeze went across my right arm. Once again the smell of dog (think he's following me around)

Vigil 2 Bar Downstairs.
In this long bar Julie asked which end did I want to go, I picked the cellar end so Julie, Gill and I went and sat down. After a few minutes I sat on the floor and heard what I thought was foot steps coming from the cellar, not many but at least three. Julie got freaked out as she couldn't see the members of the group at the other end of the bar, as she said it was like a blanket (or shadow) blocking them. After a while we changed ends with the other group and went to the dinning end. As I was walking down it felt like someone had walked though me. We sat round the table and did glass divination the glass slightly moved but nothing major, so I closed my eyes and saw this river with a over hanging branch from a tree and a cat jumping onto it and then falling into the river, I soon opened my eyes again.

Vigil 3 Upstairs.
We got upstairs and once again on the landing I could smell a dog I now know he's following me around. Gill and I went into a guest bedroom. There were three beds. We closed the door all most shut and after a while the door closed even more, we called out but nothing. Then we heard noises coming from outside on the landing. We thought it was part of the other group but later found out it wasn't. Once again I closed my eyes, I saw a boy and his dad sitting on a windowsill (like a window seat) talking and smiling. I told Gill and she said that it looked like a terrace outside one of the windows, we went outside onto the landing and the other group members were out there they also heard noises and were investigating them.

Vigil 4 Downsides.
We all meet up back in the Bar for our last vigil. Some tried glass divination but nothing happened. As this was the first time anyone has done a investigation in the Crows Nest I'm wondering if the Spirits did not know how to contact us but were trying their best to do something. With what we all got I think they did well. Thank you for another good night.

Sandy Rutter

When Eileen, Jon and I got to the pub it looked good especially as I have not done a pub investigation before. We went inside briefly had a look around, it looked very cosy.

Vigil 1
Team - Julie, Paul, Simon, Di, Gill, Sandy, Jon.

We all split up into mini groups of 2 except for Julie she was scared so she had Simon And Paul with her only joking. Jon and me went into cabin 3 a small room with 2 beds. It was a quaint little room with a chair in it, 2 chest of drawers and a cupboard. We both looked at the chair, as it seemed most active place in the room. We both thought it was very strange. Someone was there because we saw a few orbs. We both took pics of it. Looking through the pictures I got Jon in the mirror but I wasn't pointing at him at the time and it looks like he has something all the way round him. It looks really good. My walkie talkie was flashing of its own accord and I had just changed the battery before hand.

Vigil 2
All of team 2 was in the bar area. We all split up, girls near the bar and the guys up the top end. I didn't feel anything here so I haven't got much to report on this side but then we move to where the girls were. It was a hole new ball game. Me and Simon went to near the bottom of the bar and me and Simon both heard talking and foot steps but it was a noisy area because of the pumps and things for the bar but we heard what we heard. We called out and some thing tapped on the door so all in all it was a good area.

Vigil 3 & 4
Again nothing much happened here for me, but Jon did catch a few orbs. One was sitting on my shoulder. This room was like a laundry room with a bed in it. All in all it was a good investigation and I would like to go back but in a smaller group. Thanks to our hosts Kerry and Steve for laying on supper and taking part to my team. I hope to work with you all again.

Emma Curtis

Though with great regret this time I do not have anything to report, although I had a great night and the place was great with a welcoming owner I can not report anything as nothing happened.
Our first vigil was downstairs, we tried calling out and glass divination but with no luck.
Our next vigil was first floor, we tried calling out in the bathroom and one of the bedrooms but with also nothing happening .we did sit out in the hall at one point because there was a few strange clicks coming from the owners flat but was told the boiler from inside the flat clicks every now and then, so that explained that .
When we came downstairs from our second vigil the first team were still in there vigil so we went down in the old original cellar for ten minutes but still with nothing.
Our last vigil was down stairs again but still I can not report anything strange, a few others had very cold breeze's brush over there hands but with the kitchen door open and the draft excluder not too far away I can not say I thought this was paranormal activity.
The place had a warm comfortable feeling and was a pleasure to visit.

Mark Boulton

This was my second investigation, after a Chilli supper (many thanks to our hosts) we were again split into 2 teams. I was in team 2 led by Maria, and consisting of Dan (on video), Eileen, Rachel, Emma, with our hosts Kerry and Steve.

Our fist vigil was in the bar area. We started by standing as a group and did some calling out, to me there seemed to be little response, there may have been some noises but certainly no communications. We then tried a glass divination in the 'older' section of the bar area (by the fireplace) on the large table. I joined the group sat around the table (Maria, Kerry, Emma, and Steve, I think). Again there were no responses to our calling out. There were a couple of times where I felt that the glass was on the verge of moving, but it remained still. This marked the end of the first vigil. The only other things to note were that the bar area was quite warm, which was not really surprising as it had only recently been vacated by the punters. There were also many sighting of flashing lights (assumed to be camera flashes from the other group), and lastly during the glass divination, Maria asked for any names to be put into peoples head, I almost immediately though of the name Peter. We were then joined by team 1, returning from upstairs.

Team 2's second vigil was upstairs. We were separated into two sections, Eileen, Rachel, Steve and me went into the laundry room. I experienced nothing in the room, though Eileen thought she saw some light movement showing under the door (I was facing the other way).
This room was noticeably cooler than downstairs, but the sash windows were nearly fully open. There were also communication problems with the walkie talkies, but this was put down to operator error (or duff batteries). After being joined by our other section and returning downstairs, we did a short vigil in the 'old' cellar below the main stairs. Apart from smelling damp/dusty there was no responses at all, though many flash photo's were taken.

After the following break, our last vigil was again in the bar area. This pretty much followed the format of the first vigil, though there was a conscious attempt not to take any flash photos. As many lights were being seen by the other group and vice versa. The glass divination was carried out in a more central location (again with the same people as before) this time there was a response. This took the form of the glass moving very, very slowly. During the calling out (questions) the impression we got was of a young boy (no age given and no real idea of dates) this process was very slow and difficult to obtain coherent responses. One other point of interest was that there was a definite breeze of cool air across the table during divination, we were assured by our hosts that there were no fans of air-con in operation, I did have a quick look myself, but could not find an obvious cause.

When both groups were back together a final glass divination was attempted with members of both groups (too many to name), I did not take part but observed. There was no movement of the glass or any further responses. The investigation was concluded.

My personal experiences of the Crow's Nest Pub were that on the whole it was very quiet, the only real point of interest was that both teams (separately) had similar results from the glass divination, in as much that the glass moved in a similar manner, i.e. very slowly.

Gill O'Farrell

The investigation started about 1.30am. Due to the smaller size of the location there were fewer members so we were spilt into two groups. My group was lead by Julie; other members being Di, Jon, Paul, Simon and Sandy.

Our team explored the upstairs of the building first. We spilt further into three groups to allow us to cover more rooms. I worked with Di and we were dispatched to investigate the laundry room. I have to say I was not looking forward to this. There seems to be an unpleasant feeling in this room. I did my best to put these feelings aside as Di and I sat in the dark and began asking out. I experienced a great deal of sadness and anxiety in this room. I had the impression that a woman was left in the house alone and still walked through the room looking for her loved ones who had gone, perhaps overseas. Di got the name Elizabeth. We spent about 45 minutes in the room trying to get a response. I think I saw some small light activity inside the door and a couple of times we heard a knocking on the wooden chest under the window in response to our asking for this. Otherwise, I picked up little else here.

Our next vigil was in the bar area as a group. We sat along the length of the area and a number of other members seemed to have experiences. After a while we attempted some glass divination by the fire place on the table. We got some results but movement was very slow and unclear in its responses. So, although we picked up some energy, we were not able to get much information from this. I had the sense that the pub was not originally build for this purpose. There may have been some religious connection or a schoolhouse.

Our final vigil was back in the bedrooms. We swapped around to do different rooms than previously. This time, Di and I went into triple bedroom overlooking the garden at the back of the house. This room felt completely different to the other bedroom. It felt safe, warm and quiet. We continued to ask out but got nothing. All we had was a sense of restfulness and some memories of three children having happy times in the room and enjoying the garden. At the start of this vigil we were aware of Julie and some other members going into the upstairs lounge area in response to knocking noises. When Di and I were first in our bedroom I commented that I could see the light changing through the gap in the door. At first I thought the door might be opening and closing but I then realised that the light on the other side of the door was changing in intensity from low to high. After a while the light went completely and it went dark. Some time later the light started again varying from low to high. I rationalised this as someone passing a flashlight regularly outside the door and the light was turned off before being swept around again. I didn't take much notice of this light activity when it occurred later as I assumed someone outside was responsible.

At one stage we heard someone walk down the passage from the lounge and stop outside the bedroom door. It was so clear I was expecting one of the group members to enter. Afterwards I asked who had been walking around. I was unable to find who made this noise as none of the team members said they had done this. On leaving the bedroom Simon commented on the light activity in the hallway. It turned out he had been sitting outside the lounge area watching these lights sweep across the hall. This was the light activity I could see through the door, but assumed was caused by a group member. Simon was adamant that no-one had been responsible for these lights and he could not account for what he had seen. At the end of the investigation the larger group attempted a divination in the downstairs area but no movement resulted. Largely, the pub was quiet with some feelings of past residents still active in the house as well as a large amount of light activity.

Report Conclusion

I think I can say that everyone that attended had a really enjoyable night. Activity levels were low however that made what was picked up more interesting. I think the general consensus is that indeed this building may be haunted as we have no reason to disbelieve the owners however they did not make themselves known to all of us on the night, though some of the team were lucky to feel their presence in some areas. I think Paul Martin says it best in his personal report - Quote -
'....either we were all too tired by this point, or any spirits that may or may not have been present had had enough, and gone off to bed, as we had no response whatsoever during this last session. As I have often said, this is actually quite encouraging when this happens sometimes, as I think it shows that when things do not happen for us, and we getting no response at all, we do not "make things happen" - knowingly, or otherwise.'

Thank you to Kerry and her team who went beyond the usual welcome to make us feel at home in the pub. The supper was lovely and investigating with you and Steve was a pleasure. If you are up for another visit, we certainly would be!
