The Choughs Hotel, Chard in Somerset

Introduction

The Choughs Hotel Inn is situated in the centre of Chard in Somerset on the High street. A beautiful building, over 400 years old it has a long and some could say possibley colourful past. It is reputed that George Jeffreys "The Hanging Judge" stayed there whilst he conducted his Bloody Assizes in 1685. In total Judge Jeffreys sentenced 320 people to death, many of those were hung from an oak tree near by known as the Hangcross Oak.

Inside the Inn there is a tombstone embedded in the fireplace (upside down) with the weathered inscription "Winifred". Many people over the years have tried to take flash photography of this tombstone however apparently no picture has ever been successful at capturing it. Mrs Peters an old landlady of the Inn was certain that this was because the ghosts in the pub would not allow anyone to photograph it. Some people believe that the tombstone relates to a spirit that haunts the hotel and others believe it has a connection to witchcraft. When excavations of the hotel took place in the 1970's a "Priest's Hole" was discovered between the rooms and on examination, in a recess, a small coffin was found which contained the petrified remains of a Chough preserved in limestone. This was presumed to be a witches familiar.

Many odd things happen at the pub and this has lead to it being one of the locations Most Haunted visited in 2004, with some interesting results. One time a regular to the Inn witnessed in his words "A nasty old man crouched by the fireplace". This is thought to be the apparition of Judge Jeffreys himself who is thought to be one of the spirits haunting the building, his former home!

Other reported activity includes a loud, gruff coughing sound, glasses being swiped off of tables and the bar by invisible forces and shadowy figures seen in the rooms but mostly in the corridor behind the bar. Also Upstairs camcorders, cameras and other recording devices lose power. Jason, a medium is aware of many of the spirits in the building and is aware of one that follows him around.

I would like to thank Jason & his wife Marie and Richard, Deborah, Hayleigh & Kerry (and Emma the dog) for making us feel very welcome at the hotel and for allowing us to investigate at such short notice.

Vigil 1

Lounge - Temperature 25.5 room feels very warm. No notable emf reading.

Jason feels we are being watched from the corners of the room

Julie does not want to look in the corner of the room behind where Jason is sat

Jason is given the name Isobell

Jason senses a male presence and the words "I was ere" & "its been a long time" spoken in a broad somerset accent. He is also given the number 58. Asks to confirm and is given 1858.

Richard has a headache and is rubbing his head / forehead

Julie calls out for more information and Jason is given the phrase "She is watching them downstairs"

When Julie asks who is watching them, Jason is given "you know who"

Julie sees 2 flashes of light a couple of minutes apart behind Jason on the curtains. A couple of minutes later Steve believes he sees a flash, through the camcorder, coming from the area to the left of Jason where he sense a person is stood.

Bedroom 1 - Temperature 25 but team feel it is quite a lot colder than the lounge. No notable emf reading.

Julie sees a flash of light on the wardrobe. Tells team and a couple of seconds later a flash is seen through the camcorder in the same area. Tape reviewed straight away and the flash has been caught on film.

Jason senses the room is very peaceful and but feels tingly. He can sense children in the middle of the room, in a circle holding hands singing "Seesaw Majory door Johnny has got a new master"

Steve and Julie (standing) feel like they are swaying and a bit unsteady on their feet but put it down to the uneven floor of an old building.

Bedroom 2 - Temperature 23. No notable emf reading.

Camcorder (that Julie is filming with) battery dies as soon as Julie steps in the room. Several attemps to turn it back on fail as it does not even start up. Seems completely drained although it had been fully charged by Steve.

Jason is stroking his face like he has a beard

Julie feels very shakey after only a couple of minutes in the room and then gets the overwhelming feeling she is going to be sick.

Julie hears a shuffling outside of the room and checks outside but no one is there. Could have been Emma the dog?

After a couple more minutes Julie retches and asks if the group can leave this room and move onto the next area as she feels she is actually going to be sick.

Once outside the room Steve takes Julies temperature and it is 32 and her face is very sweaty. Other group members temperatures are taken and are a lot lower.

The Long Room (Bedroom 3) - Temperature 24, 22 by window and towards rear of the room. No notable emf reading.

Jason, Kerry & Richard sit on the bed, Julie & Steve face them, into the room with their backs to the door.

Jason senses a strong male presence. It is so strong that he can not decide whether it is of 1 or 2 men. The men are using very strong language and are ot the nicest temprement.

After a couple of minutes of calling out Jason is feeling very itchy.

He still senses the (what he know believes is) 2 men and as we are calling out Jason is being made to feel that them communicating with us is beneath them and they refer to us all as peasants.

Julie calls out that we mean no harm to them and the response is "you could not do us any harm it is more like us do you harm"

Julie reiterates that we mean them no harm and we ask them to respect the same of us.

Richard feels sick and has a nasty pain in his left shoulder.

Jason has an overwhelming feeling that he wants to hit Richard

Julie calls out "Who are you"

Jason is given the reply "I am who I am"

Julie gets the name Mostyn but does not share this with the group (just notes it down)

Jason and Richard are feeling more and more uncomfortable and so Steve suggest Julie and he swap places with them.

Steve sits on the bed, Julie stands next to him facing the door.

Steve reports a burning sensation in his right foot. He says it feels very hot and like it is on fire.

Steves left foot is 25 and his right foot is 29.5.

Jason then informs us their was a fire in this part of the building (and many other properties in the High Street) Julie & Steve had no prior knowledge of this.

We asked it to spell the draw of its first name, it appeared to draw what looked like a P

Jason could feel a cold breeze over his left shoulder from behind him

Steve felt a blow of air straight in his face

Jason could feel what felt like a rope around his neck and it was starting to make him cough. He could also feel like the rope was being drawn up as if he was being hanged.

When we asked the glass to move to confirm it did not want Jason at the table it moved to confirm.

Jason sat out while the divination continued

We asked that it move the glass to the person it wanted to speak to - it moved immediately to Richard

We asked if it had a connection to Richard it confirmed it did and when we asked it to draw the first letter of their name it drew a O or a D.

We asked did they want Richard at the table - No

Richard was starting to feel a choking sensation and seemed to be gasping for breath.

Jason felt it was trying to pick of the men at the table and it was the men he had a problem with

Julie asked if Kerry and herself were safe, the glass moved to confirm yes.

We asked the glass to move to the next person it wanted to talk to and it started to move towards Steve.

At this point Jason closed down the divination as Richard was finding it very hard to breath.

Personal Reports

Julie Harwood

My team consisted of Steve, Jason, Richard, Kerry & myself. I was looking forward to the investigation as even though I am a little sceptical of mediums, I knew Jason was a medium and so was interested to see how he worked. I have to say I was very impressed and would welcome Jason on any investigation with us. He never tried to lead any of us nor did he ever try and make something out of nothing. This made the whole experience a lot better for me.

Our first vigil was the upstairs part of the building. My first experience was immediately we entered the area. The team had decided to go into the lounge and I was just setting a camcorder down outside the lounge. I felt very wobbly on my feet and actually stumbled a little bit like I was giddy. I can not say what caused this although the most rational explaination is that the floor in old buildings like the Chough do tend to be very uneven and this then makes the walls look a little lopsided, hence I believe can cause a certian air of disorientation if you are not used to it. A little while later Steve experienced the same feeling.

On the vigil in the lounge I did feel a little uneasy and did not want to look into the corner of the room by where Jason was sat (near the end of the fish tank). I can not say why I felt like this but I kept imagining a man stood looking over Jason. I then saw 2 flashes of light, very small and very quick right behind Jason. After seeing the second flash I mentioned this to the group and Jason said he did feel like he had someone stood to his left (in the corner I did not want to look at) looking over him. Jason tried to communicate with the spirit and we did receive a few vague answers. Unfortunately we did not hear any audible phonomena. Richard felt very uneasy in this room and had a fairly bad headache too. Just as we were leaving I believe Steve caught a flash of light by the fish tank where Jason felt someone was. We will review the tapes as soon as possible and see what we find.

We then went into the first bedroom along from the lounge. We did not experience much in here apart from when I saw a flash of light on the wardrobe. I was wary about saying I had seen the light again and so was relieved when Steve said he had seen it through the camcorder. Again we hope to have recorded that and so will wait and see what turns up.

From this room we went into the second childs bedroom at the front of the building. The minute I entered this room I felt anxious, sweaty, dizzy, shakey and very very sick to the point that after only a couple of minutes in here I asked if we could leave as I thought I was physically going to be sick. I have never had such an extreme reaction to a room before. Also when we first went into the room the camcorder I was carrying died even though it had a fully charged battery that had so far only been used for aprox 20 minutes.

The next room we went into was the Long room. Jason, Richard and Kerry sat on the bed and Steve and I stood with our backs to the door and facing the bed. Jason could feel a very very strong male presence behind him and he was not sure if it was one or two males as it felt so strong. We tried to communicate through calling out and Jason relayed any reactions and these were not pleasant. He said that basically the spirits felt it was beneath them to talk to us and we were in fact meer peasants. Jason and Richard were feeling very uncomfortable (Richard had sever pain in his shoulder) with there back to the rest of the room and so Steve suggested we swap places with them. We went over to the bed and tried calling out again. At one point Steve reported a burning sensation in his right foot. We took temperature readings and there was a marked difference, his right foot being a lot hotter. He remarked that he felt like it was on fire and burning. It was then Jason told us that this particular part of the building had in fact been burnt down with a lot of other properties in the High Street. We had no prior knowledge of this. All the time we were stood over there I was very concious of the area to my left. It felt like someone was very close and and in my face as I was calling out. I did not share this with the group until after Jason had told me that he sensed a man leaning right over me and in my face acting very intimidating. Unfortunately this was the end of our vigil upstairs however I could have personally stayed in that room the rest of the night as I was fascinated by what was trying to intimidate me.

Our second vigil was down stairs in the bar where we attempted glass divination. I was amazed that the glass started to move immediately Jason started calling out, maybe it was his connection to the building. If there were spirits there maybe they felt like they knew him. The glass moved with great force and we seemed to communicate with various spirits including a male which took a dislike to the males in the circle. Jason had to leave the circle as he felt a restriction around his throat like a rope and likened it to being hung. It then seemed to centre on Richard and after a little while he felt the same kind of throat restriction but he said it felt like he was being strangled by hands. Suspicious that it seemed to be picking off the men we asked if myself and Kerry were safe as we were women, the glass confirmed we were safe. At this point we closed it down and met up with the other team for another attempt at glass divination using a much larger group. The results of this are fascinating and in some parts confusing but far too long to describe so please see the transcription of this session in the main part of the report.

In all a fascinating night that provided me with some sensations and experiences that I have never encountered before. Would I like to return to the Chough Hotel to investigate further, your damn right I would!

Rab Gardner

Vigil 1

Team 2 consisted of David, Ed, Deborah, Hayleigh, Marie and myself. Our first area was the Main Bar, comprising of 2 gaming areas, a large seated area and an impressive fireplace.

David started calling out to see if there was any response and at the same time Deborah and Kerry were encouraged to use the EMF meter and temp gun. No temp variances, EMF spikes, orbs or anomalous sounds were detected at that time.

We then tried glass divination with David, Deborah, Kerry and Marie seated at a table close to the LH side of the fireplace. David called out and I was surprised at the quick response from the glass. We seemed to be talking to a teenage girl called Elizabeth and she made it quite clear that I wasn’t to take photographs of the chair she was sitting in. No other anomalies were detected during here presence.

We then had a male presence that tipped the glass and wouldn’t reveal his name. During this period an EMF spike was picked up behind Marie and a cold spot that lingered for about 8-10 secs. We also heard a distinct chair creak when the presence was asked to do make a noise.

Overall, quite a good room and I enjoyed the opportunity to get familiar with the equipment. I did notice that the black EMF meter will show a spike if you move it too fast – that wasted some time chasing nothing.

Vigil 2

We started out in the Attic Room and quickly established little interest. On David’s advice we split up and I was paired with Marie.

Bedroom 1 was very quiet and no anomalies were detected. We moved swiftly on.

Bedroom 2 was also quiet but I did see an orb/flash of light move from the desk towards the door.

The Long Room had all of Team 2 in it for the last part of the vigil. Calling out produced no direct effect, but Marie was experiencing a headache while we were in this room.

The upper floor, although quiet, was a good experience for me especially when listening to David calling out. This is something I need to work on and gain confidence in.

Group Vigil

This was carried out in the Main Bar with eight of us on glass divination, Julie recording, David observing and Ed on camera.

Jason had placed an alphabet and some numbers around the edge of the table to make it easier to interpret any answers. There were a number of presences detected (see main report) but I quickly lost track of who was who. I was more interested in trying to work out what was causing an odd cold spot that moved between Jason, myself and Richard. At first I thought that it was a draft from the chimney, but both sides had been sealed. After a while the cold spot stopped and wasn’t felt anymore.

Towards the end of the vigil both Richard and I looked behind us because we felt that someone (hopefully Ed) was there. It wasn’t Ed, but I was convinced I felt a hand gently lean on my left shoulder blade as if looking over to see the table. I might have dismissed it as tiredness but Richard reacted at the same time.

I really enjoyed this Investigation and gained a lot of experience from it. As usual, lots of unanswered questions that hopefully, with another visit, will get answered.

I think the most interesting thing that came out of this investigation for me was when my group attempted a glass divination during our first vigil in the bar area, I observed how quickly the glass moved in response to the first question asked! I've now been witness to and taken part in many glass divinations and I must admit it did surprise me somewhat! The actual divination result proved fairly successful as we appeared to make contact with the spirit of a girl who according to the staff members who were accompanying us, had made contact with them before and seemed to be a 'regular' spirit of the building.

The second vigil upstairs was by far less successful and nothing was experienced by myself whatsoever.

The final group seance in the bar area again provided some answers but for me they seemed a bit vague and didn't really make much sense and therefore probably difficult to verify.

The staff seemed to really get into the entire investigation and it helped knowing that some of them had actually done vigils/investigations before so I guess they knew what was involved as well as what to expect!

Steve Gilbert

There were two unusual occurances at the Choughs for me . When doing a vigil in the bedroom i felt a very warm sensation on my right foot (verified by a 2 degree temp increase) when i sat down and Jason says there was a fire in the room nearest my right foot at some time in history.From a sceptical point of view however i was standing on an uneven floor for about 20 mins before and most of my body weight would have been on this leg.In a seperate incident during the glass divination i felt a cold blast of air on my face coming from the direction of the closed off fireplace which i have no explaination for.

There are some unusual light orb flashes on camera to view later but all told a good late night investigation that provided a smaller than usual team with some things to ponder.Thanks to the staff at the Choughs for entering into the spirit of things.
